Whether on-premises or online, the business value of SharePoint can be hard to articulate to your management team if you are not taking the time to monitor and measure. This session identifies what is available out-of-the-box in SharePoint and in Office 365, how Microsoft uses telemetry and analytics to improve the platform, and options available for identifying your ROI by using these tools and more.
Presentation given in San Francisco in January 2013 by myself and Paul Lawbaugh from Webtrends on the importance of capturing robust metrics to better understand the end user experience, build out strong KPIs and metrics, and optimize/improve based on data.
De-Mystifying ROI Calculation for SharePointsarahhaase
ROI is a "fancy" acronym for Return on Investment. While ROI implies success, it usually involves mysterious mathematical formulas that many people can't see or understand. So how does an everyday SharePoint business owner tackle the ROI puzzle? Do you just "flip the switch" on your implementation and move on? Or are you so busy with post-launch support that you don't have time to circle back and quantify your results?
This session will help you demonstrate the business value for your SharePoint implementation. We'll examine common ROI calculation methodologies while providing strategies for identifying your ROI niche and quantifying the business value of your SharePoint implementation.
North American Collaboration Summit: Analyzing Teams engagement & adoption - ...panagenda
Speaker: Ben Menesi (https://www.panagenda.com/team/ben-menesi/)
Abstract: For most organizations deploying Teams, only about 16% of employees turn out to be early adopters – arguably a wasted adoption budget.
In this hybrid technical & adoption session, you will learn from real-world customer examples where usage and engagement analysis has helped others like you conquer common adoption problems.
You will see how Admin Center, Office 365 Activity Reports, Microsoft Graph & PowerShell can serve as data goldmines for your organization's usage patterns. The insights you gain can be used to increase and sustain user adoption rates beyond what you thought possible.
At the end of this seminar, you will be thoroughly prepared to achieve your adoption goals by understanding:
- the strengths and limitations of the data available to you
- how to interpret and instantly use this data to maximize and sustain user engagement
- how to generate the best possible return on your investment

This session will discuss building an effective search and information architecture strategy for SharePoint.
One of the reasons many SharePoint implementations fail to meet user expectations is the lack of investment in its underlying information architecture. Some organizations see SharePoint as an out-of-the-box solution that they can simply plug in and throw content into, but it requires as much thought and effort around data structure, organizational principles, and search configuration as any portal or intranet.
This call will discuss building an effective search and information architecture strategy for SharePoint, including such topics as:
• Building a search & IA vision
• Requirements gathering & use cases
• Implementation strategy & approaches
• The future of SharePoint search

Discover why turnkey intranets are becoming the norm.
A turnkey solution is perfect for organizations with limited resources to build and deploy a robust digital workplace. That's because the flexibility, low setup costs, as well as the outsourced support and maintenance the intranet-as-a-service model provides, holds immense appeal for organizations from startups to the massive enterprise. See why a turnkey intranet should be your next solution.
In this webinar, Daniel Cohen-Dumani, founder and CEO of Portal Solutions and OneWindow Workplace, and Val Orekhov, CTO talked to us about how to ignite your intranet to help you increase productivity and increase employee engagement within your organization.
They discussed:
- What is a turnkey intranet
- How to decide between a custom or turnkey intranet solution
- Key benefits and features of OneWindow Workplace
Anyone can tag a document, but that is the problem. People will tag with varying degrees of accuracy, or worse still, with no accuracy. If documents are tagged accurately, then controlling and managing unstructured documents correctly is made possible. This session will review the pitfalls of manual tagging, and demonstrate the current capabilities of automatic document classification. It will also explore how intelligent metadata solutions benefit business operations, by improving migration, records management, deduplication and search.

SharePoint Governance: stories, myths, legends and real lifeToni Frankola
SharePoint governance starts with a 600-page document. At our 30-person company, we need a 40-person SharePoint Governance committee, and nobody can determine why a housekeeper has access to the governance document.
Have you heard this type of statement? We most certainly have. In this session, Toni will bust myths like these by providing a workable approach to SharePoint governance in small and large enterprises. We will talk about setting policies as well as what makes sense and what doesn’t. We will break down the governance plan and examine its pieces. Most importantly, we will talk about implementing these policies based on real-life use cases, where no one reads 600-page documents.
Session highlights:
- Developing a workable governance plan
- Setting realistic governance policies
- Automatizing policies implementation

With the rate of innovation coming from Microsoft these days, many organizations are struggling to understand which tools and capabilities to use, and when to use them. The fact is: different teams work in different ways. Within the modern digital workplace, there are many different “modalities” of collaboration — and the companies that understand and meet the evolving needs of their end users will have a competitive advantage.
This presentation reprises a keynote presentation given at the European SharePoint Conference (Nov 2016) in Vienna, Austria by Office Server and Services MVPs Christian Buckley from Beezy and Benjamin Niaulin from Sharegate as they discuss real-world scenarios and management considerations of the three primary collaboration modalities: document and process-centric (SharePoint), email-centric (Exchange and Groups), and social-centric (Yammer, Skype for Business) -- and how Beezy can meet the various needs of these modalities.

Total Economic Impact of Microsoft Office 365 Forrester StudyMicrosoft
Microsoft is excited to announce the release of the latest whitepaper from Forrester Consulting, “The Total Economic Impact of Microsoft Office 365.” In this study, Forrester surveyed 63 enterprise Office 365 customers to understand the financial impact Office 365 has had on their organizations. The study had some amazing results.
While Office365 continues to grow at a rapid rate, adoption beyond Exchange can be slow without a strategy in place. This presentation discusses: a "go to market" strategy for a successful Office 365 deployment; productivity features that will enhance adoption; strategies for keeping end users engaged; how to track usage and activity so you can measure your success; and touches on many of the productivity features (Groups, Delve, Yammer, co-editing, etc). The primary focus, however, is on the management/ongoing educational aspects of a successful deployment.

Data teams often struggle to deliver value. KPIs, data pipelines, or ML driven predictions aren't inherently useful - unless the data team enables the business to use them. Having worked on 37 data projects over the past 5 years, with total client revenue clocking at about $350B, I started noticing simple success factors - and summarized those in the Operating Model Canvas & the Value Delivery Process. With those, I branched out into what I call data organization consulting and help clients build their data teams for success, the one you see not only on paper but also in your P&L. In this talk, I'll share some insight with you.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

How many here are using the telemetry capability available from
Microsoft to improve your own platform and systems?
How many think you have a good idea of the ROI of your existing
tools and systems, including SharePoint and/or Office 365?
5. What are we talking about today?
Usage analytics
Telemetry
Return on investment
8. Measuring ROI is broad
What are you measuring?
What then needs to be monitored?
You can look at usage metrics, but is that truly the right
measurement of your ROI?
11. Benefits of tracking usage
Prove out basic adoption of new sites
Help identify shortfalls in the design
Indicate how searches are being used
Whether search is effective, where it should be optimized
Track basic historical patterns in usage, such as the number of
views and unique users

21. Telemetry+analytics
Office Telemetry is a compatibility monitoring framework
Replaces the Office 2010 compatibility tools Office Migration
Planning Manager (OMPM), Office Code Compatibility Inspector
(OCCI), and Office Environment Assessment Tool (OEAT)
Simply put, monitors and tracks exceptions within your platform
Pushes exception data to an log in real-time
Accurate data around what people are doing, steps they take to
complete work activities
22.
23. How Microsoft uses telemetry and
analytics to improve the platform
When a document or solution is loaded, used, closed, or raises an error,
the application adds a record about the event to a local data store.
Each record includes a description of the problem and a link to more
information.
Inventory and usage data is tracked.
Data analysts review results, help the product team identify impact of
problems founds, value of options to resolve
The product team is better able to assess where to invest time and
resources based on actual customer activity
24. What is Office Telemetry Dashboard?
Excel-based solution designed for IT Pros to view metrics
‒ How frequently end users open specific Office documents
‒ Issues that end users experience
‒ Detailed information about their deployments, hardware, and
documents
Aggregated telemetry data is collected from end user PCs
25.
26. How can I apply this?
Step 1-Collect data: Start with collecting
actual document and solution usage and
metadata from end users.
Step 2-Analyze data: Identify the business-
critical documents and add-ins that need to
be ready on the first day of your deployment.
Step 3-Start a pilot deployment, focusing on
the most critical solutions: Focus on testing
documents and add-ins that are necessary to
run the business. Proactively monitor how
the business-critical documents and add-ins
are behaving when they are tested. Quickly
figure out resolutions to issues.
Step 4-Deploy and continue monitoring your
solutions: Deploy the new solutions, and look
for cases of errors or poor performance to be
addressed.
27. Why you might extend your own
telemetry and analytics capabilities
Focus your innovation on where you’ll drive the most benefit
REALITY: It’s really powerful, but difficult
Pilot first, rinse, repeat
Focus on very specific metrics, expand from there
Focus on a key workload – like reducing product delivery time
‒ Map out the key business activities
‒ Identify measurable activities
‒ Create a baseline measurement
‒ Pilot the activity first
‒ Monitor and iterate
29. You cannot manage by spreadsheet.
Data should be used to inform,
supplement, understand, validate.
30.

Whether on-premises or online, the business value of SharePoint can be hard to articulate to your management team if you are not taking the time to monitor and measure.
That’s essentially what we’re going to talk about today (3 points).
I’ll go through what is available today from the platform, but really want to focus on the “Why”, and hopefully help you walk out of here with a strategy for developing stronger metrics. The tools are basically all there – my goal is to get you to use them.
Share story of managing internal MS sites
Share story of support personnel, the person who cherry picked easy problems to solve and completed many versus person who took few, but the ugliest problems. What is your measurement?
Salespeople who are measured on number of calls made, versus quality of conversations. Is one better than the other? A lot depends on what you’re selling. Transactional, more calls means more customers through the pipeline. The more the sale is about relationship and trust, the more you want to focus on the quality of your connections.
How similar this effort is to portfolio management
