Every day, a lot of people all over the world participate in games and sports activities or competitions.
Participation in sports improves physical fitness and overall health and wellness. Games and sports can
also result in injuries, some minor, some serious and still other in lifelong medical problem. Sports
injuries result from acute trauma or repetitive stress associated with athletic activities. Sports injuries can
affect bones or soft tissue (ligaments, muscles, tendons). There are numerous sports injuries happened in
the field of sports. It is very important for all coaches, trainers and players to know the causes symptoms,
prevention and treatment for all these common injuries in order to avoid most of these types of injuries,
This document provides an overview of badminton and common sports injuries that can occur while playing badminton. It describes the game of badminton, including equipment, court dimensions, and scoring. It then discusses some of the most common types of sports injuries seen in badminton, such as sprains, strains, knee injuries, compartment syndrome, and shin splints. The injuries are briefly defined and examples are given of how they may occur during badminton.
This document discusses sports medicine, including the concept, aims, scope, common injuries, and injury management. It defines sports medicine as dealing with prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of sports injuries. The document outlines the various types of sports surfaces and environments and their impact on athletes. It also classifies and describes common soft tissue, bone, and joint injuries in sports. Finally, it provides guidance on injury prevention strategies and first aid treatments for different types of common sports injuries.
Common Sports Injuries amongst the Elite Women Basketball Players of IndiaIOSR Journals
Abstract: An injury is a common phenomenon in the field of sports. Ranging from amateurs to the most
seasoned sports personalities, almost every one faces the brunt of an injury at some point in their sporting
careers. To gauge the effect and extent of these injuries, the members of the Indian women basketball team were
examined for common sports injuries. While they represent the country at various international tournaments
round the year, the results of the survey painted a very dismal picture.
The longevity of a sports person’s career depends critically on the severity of an injury. In some cases, severe
injuries have an intense impact immediately. While on the other hand, there are also instances when an injury is
ignored and remains untreated; this becomes worse and hinders the crucial functioning of a sports person on
the field. Irrespective of the case, it is essential that all such injuries be avoided at all levels of the sport for its
growth and development.
It is an endeavor by the research scholars to isolate the most common and frequently occurring injuries so that
the players, coaches, doctors and physiotherapists can concentrate and work on the preventive measures for
them. Key Words: Basketball, Prevention, Sports Injuries, Women
Football is a high-contact sport that carries risks of various injuries. Head injuries such as concussions have been increasing in soccer. Heading the ball poses risks especially for younger players. Spinal injuries to the cervical and lumbar spine can occur from falls or tackles, though are generally rare. Common injuries include shoulder dislocations, knee ligament tears like ACL injuries, ankle sprains, and thigh muscle strains from sprinting. Stress fractures can develop from repetitive loading and impact forces overplaying the sport. Proper medical coverage is important given the physical nature of football.
Ankle injuries are common in badminton due to the sport's demands on the ankle joint. The ankle is susceptible to ligament sprains from sudden movements like jumping and changing directions. Specifically, the anterior talofibular ligament is often injured from foot inversion. Treatment involves RICE - rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Physiotherapy focuses on regaining strength, balance and flexibility before returning to play. Prevention emphasizes cardiovascular fitness, ankle flexibility and strength, and landing technique training.
The document discusses epidemiology and risk factors related to athletic injuries. It provides an overview of sports injury surveillance systems and defines reportable injuries. Several high-risk sports are identified along with common injury sites. Intrinsic risk factors like age, gender, and medical conditions are examined. Adolescent growth-related risks and gender-specific concerns are also outlined.

The document evaluates football helmet testing standards and recommends including rotational acceleration testing. It analyzes different helmet testing methods, including linear drop tests, linear impact tests, and the football and hockey STAR methods. The hockey STAR method uses a pendulum to strike helmets at adjustable angles, allowing tests of both linear and rotational acceleration. The document concludes the hockey STAR method is the most realistic and versatile for testing impacts involving rotational acceleration, which are common in football and contribute significantly to brain injuries. Rotational acceleration testing should be incorporated into football helmet standards.
The document provides an overview of various musculoskeletal disorders and injuries organized into seven parts. Part 1 covers degenerative and metabolic bone disorders like osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Part 2 discusses bone infections. Parts 3 and 4 address muscular and nerve disorders. Part 5 outlines spinal deformities. Part 6 examines foot disorders. Part 7 focuses on common sports injuries such as sprains, strains, and injuries to the knee.
The document discusses the prevention and management of sports injuries. It states that prevention is better than cure and that 30-50% of sports injuries are preventable. It identifies human, terrain, and equipment factors that can cause injuries and outlines several principles for injury prevention, including proper warm up, cooling down, stretching, skill development, fitness, rules compliance, and equipment safety. The document provides guidance on assessing and initially managing injured athletes, emphasizing stopping activity and evaluating for life threats before further examining the injury.
This document defines different types of sports injuries and provides injury data for several sports. It describes acute injuries as having rapid onset from trauma, while chronic injuries develop over time from repetitive stress. Overuse injuries can result from intrinsic athlete factors or extrinsic training factors. Epidemiological studies examine injury risk factors and rates. For many sports like football, basketball, wrestling and soccer, the most common injuries are strains, sprains and contusions to the lower extremities. Injury rates often vary by age, sex and position.
In today’s scenario the sports have become highly competitive. The nature of all sports has become aggressive. So the chance of injuries also rises. This article will light up the most common sport injury i.e. facture. We have 206 bones in your body that make up your skeleton. Our skeleton supports and protects the soft tissues in your body and allows you to move. Bone is a living tissue with a soft center of bone marrow that produces blood cells. Your bones have a hard outer surface (the cortex) that contains minerals such as calcium. Healthy bones are strong and can bear a lot of weight and force. They do bend a little and sometimes you may apply force to a bone but it won’t break, but some times during a hard fall facture can occurs. Fractures usually happen when too much force is applied to a bone, usually during a fall or a sports accident. There are different types of fracture but they all result in a partially or completely broken bone. If you have an accident or sports injury your bone may fracture into many pieces. Facture is a most common sports injury which may be occurs at any time during the play.
The document discusses sports injuries, providing an overview of causes, classifications, and treatments. It describes how increased speed and competitiveness in sports has led to higher injury rates. Sports injuries can be traumatic from external contact or non-traumatic from overuse. Common causes include predisposing anatomical factors, equipment, playing surfaces, techniques, conditioning, warm-ups, and increased frequency or duration of activity. Treatments depend on the type and severity of the injury.

The document discusses bones, bone fractures, and their causes. It notes that there are 206 bones in the human body that form the skeletal system. Bone fractures can result from falls, trauma, motor vehicle accidents, and health conditions like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis causes weak and brittle bones making fractures more likely. Surgery may be required for severe fractures. The document also mentions the drug Fosamax which is used to treat osteoporosis but can have side effects.
The document discusses sports injuries, providing definitions and examples of common types of injuries. It explains that sports injuries can be soft tissue injuries, like strains, sprains, bruises and blisters, which damage muscles, ligaments or tendons, or hard tissue injuries like fractures and dislocations, which damage bones or joints. The document emphasizes the importance of studying sports injuries in physical education, as they are common in sports and knowing how to diagnose, treat and prevent injuries is crucial for coaches and trainers. Proper warm-ups, rest, ice, compression and elevation are recommended treatments for many minor soft tissue injuries.

Common sports injuries include sprains, strains, dislocations, fractures, knockouts, punch syndrome, wrestler's ear, weightlifter blackouts, side stitches, low back pain, shoulder impingement syndrome, tennis elbow, javelin thrower's elbow, boxer's elbow, and mallet finger. Some of these injuries are caused by overuse or repetitive motions while others are caused by acute trauma from falls or collisions. It is important for athletes, coaches, and trainers to understand how these injuries occur in order to implement prevention strategies and proper rehabilitation.
This document discusses sports injury prevention and management. It begins by defining different types of injuries like strains, sprains, fractures, and dislocations. It then covers common sports injuries and chronic injuries like stress fractures and tendinitis. The document also addresses heat-related illnesses and their symptoms. For injury prevention, it recommends proper physical conditioning, following rules, wearing protective gear, resting, and warming up. For injury management, it advises following the RICER procedure of rest, ice, compression, elevation, and referral in the first 24-48 hours. It cautions against practices like heat, alcohol, excessive exercise, and massage in the initial stages.
The document discusses training principles for maintaining health-related fitness. It explains that cooperation precedes competition in games and sports as cooperation allows for structured activities with teammates, while competition involves opposing goals. The document also discusses causes of sports injuries, categorizing them as either acute or overuse injuries. It provides examples of common acute injuries like sprains, strains, fractures and dislocations, and overuse injuries like stress fractures, tendinopathy, osteoarthritis and bursitis.
Musculoskeletal injuries commonly occur from sports and daily activities. Common sports injuries include contusions, sprains, strains, and fractures. Sprains involve ligament tearing and are commonly seen in the shoulder, knee, and ankle. Strains are muscle or tendon tears that can be acute or chronic. Treatment of these injuries often involves RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) followed by physical therapy.
This document provides information about common sports injuries. It defines strains as overstretched muscles or tendons, and sprains as overstretched ligaments connecting bones. Fractures are broken bones, and dislocations are bones pushed from their joints. Concussions involve brain impacts inside the skull. The document discusses causes and symptoms of each injury, as well as prevention strategies like warming up, stretching, wearing protective gear, and resting injuries properly.
This document summarizes common sports injuries and their treatment. It discusses how injuries often occur due to overuse and lack of protective equipment. Common injuries in basketball like ankle sprains and ACL tears are explained. The treatment process for ACL tears using RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and surgery is summarized. It also discusses how to rehabilitate and strengthen the knee through stretching, muscle exercises, and cardio to aid recovery and prevent reinjury.

This document discusses the current landscape of concussions in sports. It covers several areas: the short and long term effects of concussions, what professional sports leagues are doing to address concussions through increased funding of research and improved equipment, and the social responsibilities of coaches, doctors, and athletes to ensure player health and safety. Concussions are a risk in many contact sports and can cause transient brain dysfunction as well as long term issues like CTE if not properly managed.
This document discusses common volleyball injuries, including acute and overuse injuries. The most common acute injury is ankle sprains, usually from landing on another player's foot. Overuse injuries include patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee) and shoulder issues. Treatment for acute injuries follows PRICE principles (protection, rest, ice, compression, elevation) while overuse injuries are managed with rest, strengthening, and modifying training. Preventing ankle sprains involves proprioceptive exercises, ankle braces, and potentially rule changes.
Triathlons pose risks of injury to competitors. Common injuries include swimmer's shoulder from repetitive overhead motions of swimming, biker's back from improper bike setup or form, runner's knee from overuse or muscle imbalances, and Achilles tendonitis also from overuse. However, many triathlon injuries are preventable through measures like allowing adequate rest between workouts, following the 10% rule of gradual increases in training, stretching, and addressing muscle imbalances or equipment fit issues. While injuries may still occur, taking proper precautions can help athletes minimize risks and enjoy competing in triathlons.
Medial Epicondylitis conditioning and rehabsirish413
Medial epicondylitis, commonly known as golfer's elbow, is an injury caused by small tears developing in the tendons that attach muscles in the forearm to the inner elbow bone. It occurs due to repetitive motions like those seen in sports like golf, tennis, or weightlifting with poor form. Symptoms include pain on the inner elbow and forearm when flexing the wrist. Rehabilitation focuses on reducing inflammation, strengthening the forearm muscles, and improving flexibility through exercises like wrist stretches and resistance band work. Prevention emphasizes warming up, proper form, and resting when pain first occurs.
Hip fractures most commonly occur in people over 70, while wrist fractures most commonly occur in people under 70. Stress fractures are small cracks in bones that develop due to repeated stress, such as from high-impact sports. They most often occur in the lower leg and foot region and risk factors include activities that stress these areas as well as low bone mass. Comminuted fractures split the affected bone into three or more fragments and usually require surgery to realign the pieces, while open or compound fractures puncture the skin, increasing risks of infection and blood loss.

Psaroudakis’ early life in Heraklion was deeply influenced by a supportive and nurturing family environment. His father, a former semi-professional footballer, recognized Psaroudakis’ potential from an early age. Acting as his first coach, his father’s guidance was instrumental in igniting Psaroudakis’ passion for football. This paternal influence instilled in him a strong work ethic and fundamental skills that would become the foundation of his future success. His mother, a dedicated homemaker, provided a stable and nurturing environment, ensuring that Psaroudakis could pursue his dreams without any hindrances.
From a young age, Psaroudakis showed an innate talent for football. Growing up in Heraklion, he spent countless hours playing football in local parks and streets with friends and family. His natural ability was evident even in these informal settings, and his enthusiasm for the game was infectious. By the age of five, Psaroudakis had joined a local youth football club, where his skills began to flourish. His father’s role as his first coach during these formative years was crucial, as he emphasized not only technical skills but also the importance of discipline and teamwork.
The transition from playing in local parks to joining a structured football environment marked a significant step in Psaroudakis’ journey. At the age of ten, he joined the youth academy of OFI Crete, one of Greece’s most esteemed football clubs. This move marked the beginning of a more rigorous and professional approach to his training. The academy environment was demanding, focusing on honing technical abilities and instilling values of sportsmanship and dedication. Psaroudakis’ dedication to his craft was evident as he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a standout player in the youth teams.
The support of Psaroudakis’ family was unwavering during this critical period. His father continued to be a source of guidance and mentorship, while his mother ensured that he had everything he needed to succeed. Their collective efforts created a balanced environment where Psaroudakis could focus entirely on his development as a footballer. This familial support was not just about providing the basics; it was about creating an environment where Psaroudakis felt encouraged and motivated to pursue his dreams relentlessly.
As Psaroudakis transitioned from the youth academy to professional football, the challenges became more significant.

However, in 2023, they played one another twice, with France endearing both matches 4-0 and 2-1 individually. Against Poland and Austria, the Netherlands also have a stout record, winning just under half the matches. They faced Austria at Euro 2020, engaging 2-0, and they haven't lost to Poland since 1979.
The lettering is on the wall for Holland to qualify for the knockouts, but nothing is failsafe. The Netherlands kickstart their Euros campaign against Poland on Sunday, June 16th. In Hamburg, they will have to go up against one of the best strikers in the world, Robert Lewandowski.
Netherlands vs Austria: Tough Challenges Await the Netherlands in Euro Cup Germany
Five days later, they travel south to face France in Leipzig, a side led by Kylian Mbappe - one of the finest players in the world currently and one of the most impressive players in his nation's history. To conclude, they face Austria in Berlin, knowing it could be the end of the road if they don't perform.
Ronald Koeman is widely considered one of the more successful Dutch managers in Premier League history, considering the nation has a reputation for struggling to replicate their talents in England. The former Everton manager went against that script and shone — and now he is back managing his nation.

Netherlands vs Austria: Ronald Koeman's Tactical Approach For UEFA Euro 2024
As well as being the highest-scoring defender in history, Koeman is a man with immense tactical knowledge. He returned to manage Holland at the start of 2023 after it was announced Louis van Gaal would retire. His life back in the dugout with the team wasn't easy, as he lost his first match 4-0 to France after going 3-0 down within 21 minutes.
However, he eventually helped them qualify for Euro Cup Germany. The 61-year-old likes to organize his team with a defensive mindset. Some might call it pragmatic as he defends with minimal space between the lines, but that's often needed for international football.

Belgium coach Domenico Tedesco will wait for several key players to recover from injury. Even if it means they miss the opening Euro Cup Germany stages of the European Championship in Germany this month. Veteran defender Jan Vertonghen, midfielder Youri Tielemans and defender Arthur. Theate are being given time to play in the tournament because they are considered vital to Belgium’s cause, Tedesco said on Tuesday.

"Of course, you prefer to take players who are fully fit, but that's okay. We want to wait and be patient for some players even if they cannot play in those first matches," he told a press conference. The 37-year-old Vertonghen, Belgium’s Euro Cup 2024 most-capped international with 154 appearances, is struggling to shake off a groin injury.
"He will be there normally. This also applies to Youri Tielemans and Arthur Theate. The latter's position is very sensitive. We don't have many choices at left back. "It will only change if it turns out that they will only be available when, say, the final of the Euro 2024 Championship comes around. That's too long to wait. "However, I am confident that the injured boys are on track for the Euros.
Belgium vs Romania: Radu Dragusin Prepares for Crucial Role in Euro Cup Germany
Some of them have taken not one but two steps forward in their rehabilitation," he said. None of the injured players will feature in this week’s warm-up friendlies against Montenegro and Luxembourg. Romania centre-back Radu Dragusin found chances limited at Tottenham Hotspur in the second half of the 2023-24 season.
But is crucial to his country's cause at UEFA Euro 2024 where his aerial ability, physicality and hard graft make him a standout player. The 22-year-old moved to North London from Italian side Genoa in January but was kept on the sidelines by the form of another new arrival for the season, Mickey van de Ven, something Romania coach Edward Iordanescu admitted was a concern.
It will mean limited game-time going into the finals, but Dragusin, who cites Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk as a role model, started every Euro Cup Germany qualifier as Romania went through the campaign unbeaten in their 10 games. He will be among their most important players in their first game in Germany against Ukraine in Munich on June 17, taking the right centre-back role in what is likely to be a back four.

3. Strains
A muscle strain is where muscle tissues or fibers are stretched
or torn. A muscle strain is sometimes referred to as 'pulling a
muscle'. Tendons can also be strained. A tendon is the tough,
narrow tissue at the end of a muscle that connects it to the
bone. Strains are caused by a muscle that is overstretched or
that over-contracts. Symptoms of a strain include:
pain,
Muscle spasm,
A loss of strength in the muscle.
Strains are common to many sports, particularly those
involving running, jumping or rapid changes of direction.
To help prevent sprains and strains, you should warm up
properly before exercising and wear suitable footwear.
Conditioning and strengthening exercises can also help.
Fig 2: Sample of elbow strain injury [9]
4. Dislocation
A dislocation is an injury in which the ends of your bones are
forced from their normal positions. The cause is usually
trauma resulting from a fall, an auto accident, or a collision
during contact or high-speed sports. Dislocation usually
involves the body's larger joints. In adults, the most common
site of the injury is the shoulder. In children, it's the elbow.
Your thumb and fingers also are vulnerable if forcibly bent the
wrong way. The injury will temporarily deform and
immobilize your joint and may result in sudden and severe
pain and swelling. A dislocation requires prompt medical
attention to return your bones to their proper positions.
Fig 3: Sample of ankle dislocation injury [10]
5. Fractures
Fractures are a common injury for people of all ages.
Diagnosing a fracture can sometimes be complicated as it
depends on location and how the fragments are aligned. The
difference between a compound fracture and a simple fracture
is visible, and an x-ray will be able to determine the shape of
the fracture. Children will heal faster than adults as their
bodies are still growing. A fracture for a child could take only
a few weeks to heal, whereas an older adult could take months.
The best way to prevent one from occurring is to practice
safety and awareness.
Fig 4: Types of bone fractures [11]
6. Knockout
Knock out is a fight-ending, winning criterion in several full-
contact combat sports, such as boxing, kickboxing, karate,
some forms of taekwondo and other sports involving striking
[12]
. The term is often associated with a sudden traumatic loss
of consciousness caused by a physical blow. Single powerful
blows to the head can produce a cerebral concussion or a
carotid sinus reflex with syncope and cause a sudden, dramatic
knock out [13]
.

7. Punch Syndrome
Punch syndrome is a condition seen in boxers and alcoholics,
caused by repeated cerebral concussions and characterized by
weakness in the lower limbs, unsteadiness of gait, slowness of
muscular movements, hand tremors, hesitancy of speech, and
mental dullness. Punch syndrome most often affects fighters of
the slugging type, who are usually poor boxers and who take
considerable head punishment, seeking only to land a
knockout blow [15]
. It is also common in second rate fighters
used for training purposes, who may be knocked down several
times a day. Frequently it takes a fighter from one to two hours
to recover from a severe blow to the head or jaw. In some
cases consciousness may be lost for a considerable period of
time [16]
.

8. Wrestler Ear
The term cauliflower or wrestler ear refers to a deformity of
the ear caused by blunt trauma or other injury, such as what
may occur during a boxing or wrestling match [18]
. Left
untreated, the injury leads to a blockage that prevents blood
flow and damages tissue. This results in a bumpy or lumpy
appearance on part of the ear, similar to a cauliflower. The
most common cause of wrestler ear is a hit to the ear or
repeated hits to the ear that leads to hematomas, or small
collections of blood that clot and block the flow of blood and
nutrients. These can also occur when skin is pulled away from
cartilage, the semi-rigid tissue that gives the ear its shape
fortunately, the types of injuries that cause cauliflower ear are
often preventable by wearing the right type of protective head
gear. Early treatment can help prevent permanent deformity
[19]
.

9. Weight lifter blackout
Blacking out while exercising can be due to a variety of causes
that restrict blood flow to your brain. Dehydration as not
having enough fluids in your body it can lower your blood
pressure and lead to blacking out, particularly if you are
sweating a lot [21]
.Dehydration is the most common cause of
orthostatic hypotension, this causes significant drops in blood
pressure when you go from laying to sitting to standing. If you
are significantly dehydrated and trying to squat it is not
unreasonable to think your blood pressure changes could cause
you to become light headed and close to blacking out [22]
.
Fig 8: Sample of blackout condition [23].
10. Stitch at side
Side stitches are muscle spasms of the diaphragm, and they
occur occasionally during strenuous exercise [24]
. Most people
experience stitches on their right side, immediately below the
ribs. A sudden sharp pain during exercise that occurs below
the bottom of the ribcage, and disappears once exercise stops
[25]
. Though there are different theories, some experts think
stitches are the result of a cramp in the diaphragm, perhaps due
to. As you run, you increase pressure on your abdominal
muscles and breathe rapidly, expanding your lungs. This pain
gradually subside as the activity continues [26]
.
Fig 9: Sample of stitch at side injury [27]
11. Low back pain
Lower back pain can be caused by a variety of problems with
any parts of the complex, interconnected network of spinal
muscles, nerves, bones, discs or tendons in the lumbar
spine[28]
. Pain in the low back can be a result of conditions
affecting the bony lumbar spine, discs between the vertebrae,
ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves,
muscles of the low back, internal organs of the pelvis and
abdomen, and the skin covering the lumbar area. Treatment of
low back pain is optimally directed toward a diagnosed or
suspected specific cause [29]
. For acute lumbar strain, use of a
home remedy initially can be beneficial. Exercise appears to
be useful for preventing low back pain [30]
. Exercise is also
probably effective in preventing recurrences in those with pain
that has lasted more than six weeks.

12. Shoulder impingement syndrome
Shoulder impingement syndrome is a common cause of
shoulder pain. It occurs when there is impingement of tendons
from bones of the shoulder [32]
. Overhead activity of the
shoulder, especially repeated activity, is a risk factor for
shoulder impingement syndrome. Examples include: painting,
lifting, swimming, tennis, and other overhead sports. Other
risk factors include bone and joint abnormalities. With
impingement syndrome, pain is persistent and affects everyday
activities. Motions such as reaching up behind the back or
reaching up overhead to put on a coat or blouse for example
may pain. Over time, impingement syndrome can lead to
inflammation of the rotator cuff tendons (tendinitis) and bursa
(bursitis). Impingement syndrome is usually treated
conservatively, but sometimes it is treated with arthroscopic
surgery or open surgery [33]
. Conservative treatment includes
rest, cessation of painful activity, and physical therapy.
Fig 111: Anatomical structure of shoulder impingement syndrome [34]
13. Tennis elbow
Tennis elbow" is a common term for a condition caused by
overuse of arm, forearm, and hand muscles that results in
elbow pain. You don't have to play tennis to get this, but the
term came into use because it can be a significant problem for
some tennis players. Tennis elbow is caused by either sudden
or indirect injury of the muscle and tendon area around the
outside of the elbow[35]
. Tennis elbow specifically involves the
area where the muscles and tendons of the forearm attach to
the outside bony area (called the lateral epicondyle) of the
elbow. Overuse injury can also affect the back or posterior part
of the elbow as well. Tennis elbow most commonly affects
people in their dominant arm, but it can also occur in the non-
dominant arm or both arms [36]
.
Fig 12: Sample of tennis elbow injury [37].
14. Javelin throwers elbow
Throwers elbow occurs when there is damage to the bones,
muscles, tendons and ligaments around the elbow joint and
forearm. The throwing motion causes the structures on the
medial side (inside) of the elbow to stretch, while at the same
time compresses the structures on the lateral side (outside) of
the elbow. The damage eventually causes a restriction of
movement, inflammation and pain, and leads to the formation
of scar tissue, bone spurs and calcium deposits. If untreated,
this damage can put so much pressure on the muscles and
nerves that they can cut off the blood flow and pinch the
nerves responsible for controlling the muscles in the forearm.
By far the most common cause of throwers elbow is overuse,
Poor technique, using ill-fitted equipment and poor level of
general fitness and conditioning. Any action which places a
repetitive and prolonged strain on the forearm muscles,
coupled with inadequate rest, will strain and overwork those
muscles [38]
.
Fig 13: Sample of throwers elbow injury [39].
15. Boxer elbow
As is the case with any complex joint, elbow injuries can range
from minor to acute. Boxing injuries of the acute variety could
include elbow dislocations, tendon tears and serious damage to
the structures around the elbow. These injuries require medical
attention and possibly surgery. For minor injuries overuse and
boxer's elbow, which involve pain in the posterior of the joint,
rest and rehabilitation should be sufficient. Once you damage

your elbows by striking too hard and too fast or missing the
target completely, you need to take a patient approach to make
a full and lasting recovery. Strengthening exercises include
liberal stretching of the area, along with exercises to
strengthen the grip. Working on wrist flexion will help to
strengthen tendons that run from the hand all the way up to the
elbow [40]
.
Fig 14: X-ray case shows a posterior dislocation of the elbow [41].
16. Mallet finger
A mallet finger is a deformity of the finger caused when the
tendon that straightens your finger (the extensor tendon) is
damaged. When a ball or other object strikes the tip of the
finger or thumb and forcibly bends it, the force tears the
tendon that straightens the finger. The force of the blow may
even pull away a piece of bone along with the tendon. In a
mallet finger, the fingertip droops, it cannot straighten on its
own power. The finger may be painful, swollen and bruised,
especially if there is an associated fracture, but often the only
finding is the inability to straighten the tip [42]
.
Fig 15: Sample of mallet finger injury in baseball [43].
17. Runner’s Knee
Runner’s knee, got its nickname for an obvious and very
unfortunate reason, it's common among runners, But it can
also strike any athlete who does activities that require a lot of
knee bending like walking, biking, and jumping. It usually
causes aching pain around the kneecap. The stress of running
can cause irritation where the kneecap (patella) rests on the
thighbone. The resulting pain can be sharp and sudden or dull
and chronic, and it may disappear while you're running, only
to return again afterward, the cause can often be traced back to
poorly conditioned quadriceps and tight hamstrings [44]
. In the
absence of cartilage damage, pain at the front of the knee due
to overuse can be managed with a combination of RICE (rest,
ice, compression, elevation), anti-inflammatory medications,
and physiotherapy [45]
.
Fig 16: Sample of pain in Patella tendon as a result of knee injury [46].
18. Jumper’s Knee
Jumper's knee also known as patellar tendonitis or patellar
tendinopathy, is an inflammation or injury of the patellar
tendon, the cord-like tissue that joins the patella (kneecap) to
the tibia (shin bone). Jumper's knee is an overuse injury,
regularly happened to the one who plays sports that involve a
lot of repetitive jumping - like track and field (particularly
high-jumping), basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, running,
and soccer can put a lot of strain on their knees [47]
.
Fig 17: Sample of jumper’s knee injury-inflamed patellar tendon [48].
19. Shin Splint
The term "shin splints" refers to pain along the shinbone (tibia)
the large bone in the front of your lower leg. Shin splints are
common in runners, dancers and military recruits. Medically
known as medial tibia stress syndrome, shin splints often occur
in athletes who have recently intensified or changed their
training routines. The muscles, tendons and bone tissue
become overworked by the increased activity. Most cases of
shin splints can be treated with rest, ice and other self-care
measures. Wearing proper footwear and modifying your
exercise routine can help prevent shin splints from recurring
[49]
