   Overview of the entire course

   Introduction to Module 1

   Parts two of Week One will be discussed in
    ensuing narrated slides
   16-Week course taught online/on campus

   Four (4) modules
    ◦ Module 1: Fundamental Responsibilities
      Course Overview
      Introduction
      Weekly Topics – Teaching, Service, and Scholarship

    ◦ Module 2: Principles of Teaching and Learning

    ◦ Module 3: Student Assessment Strategies

    ◦ Module 4: Contemporary Classroom Technology
   High-quality, innovative course in
    collaboration with the HPD Center for
    Teaching & Learning

   The course provide basic tools to enhance
    teaching. Not designed to create expert
    teachers

   Experience is the best teacher
   Teachers do not just relay information to
    students

   We can positively impact students’ lives

   Teaching does not lead to being famous or
    rich

   We teach to make a difference
• We as teachers do not always appreciate
  how much of an impact we have on others

   We must have a passion for the craft and a
    willingness to be daring and resourceful

   We cannot be just slide readers
   The intent of showing this clip is not to have
    you assume that style of instruction, but
    instead to embrace the message of the
    delivery

   A healthy combination of substance and style
    yield significant rewards
   Three-week module is the beginning module
    The Art and Science of Teaching and Learning

   Fundamental responsibilities required of a
    faculty member engaged in teaching and
    learning

   Emphasis on faculty evaluation system
    requirements for contracts and promotion –
    Teaching, service, and scholarship
   The college’s annual appointment, reappointment, and
    continuing contract policies and procedures document provide
    an exhaustive list of activities utilizing the following rating
    system
    ◦   4.0   =   Exceeds Expected Performance
    ◦   3.0   =   Meets Expected Performance
    ◦   2.0   =   Performance Improvement Required
    ◦   1.0   =   Unacceptable Performance

   Success for continuing contract is an aggregate score of 3.0 or
    better, with no less than 2.0 in any individual category

   The college’s promotion document also provides an exhaustive
    list of activities utilizing a set type and number of indices based
    on the level of promotion – from Instructor to Assistant Professor
    to Associate Professor and to full Professor.
   Each of the 3 weeks of Module One will
    emphasize one performance area
    ◦ Week One - Teaching: The Highest Form of
     Learning

    ◦ Week Two – Service: The Greatest Form of
     Leadership

    ◦ Week Three – Scholarship: The Principal Pedagogical
     Enhancer
   Know your own style so that you may append
    the substance congruent to that style

   Do not assume a style of Teaching and
    Learning that is totally contrary to one’s own
    personality

  • 4. 16-Week course taught online/on campus  Four (4) modules ◦ Module 1: Fundamental Responsibilities  Course Overview  Introduction  Weekly Topics – Teaching, Service, and Scholarship ◦ Module 2: Principles of Teaching and Learning ◦ Module 3: Student Assessment Strategies ◦ Module 4: Contemporary Classroom Technology

Three-week module is the beginning module The Art and Science of Teaching and Learning  Fundamental responsibilities required of a faculty member engaged in teaching and learning  Emphasis on faculty evaluation system requirements for contracts and promotion – Teaching, service, and scholarship
  • 12. The college’s annual appointment, reappointment, and continuing contract policies and procedures document provide an exhaustive list of activities utilizing the following rating system ◦ 4.0 = Exceeds Expected Performance ◦ 3.0 = Meets Expected Performance ◦ 2.0 = Performance Improvement Required ◦ 1.0 = Unacceptable Performance  Success for continuing contract is an aggregate score of 3.0 or better, with no less than 2.0 in any individual category  The college’s promotion document also provides an exhaustive list of activities utilizing a set type and number of indices based on the level of promotion – from Instructor to Assistant Professor to Associate Professor and to full Professor.
