This is a presentation on "Lean & Agile Enterprise Frameworks: For Managing Large U.S. Government Cloud Computing Projects," which are emerging models for managing high-risk, time-sensitive R&D-oriented new product development (NPD) projects with demanding customers and fast-changing market conditions (at the enterprise, portfolio, and program levels). It establishes the context, provide a definition, and describe the value-system for lean and agile program and project management. It provides a brief survey and comparative analysis of the pros and cons of emerging lean and agile frameworks such as Enterprise Scrum, LeSS, DaD, SAFe, and RAGE. Then it describes the Scaled Agile Academy's Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) in greater detail (which is the de facto international standard for scaling the use of agile methods to the enterprise, portfolio, and program levels for both systems and software development). SAFe is hybrid model best known for "blending" megatrends such as lean and agile principles into a single unified framework, establishing an authoritative foundation for scaling agile methods to large-scale private and public sector programs, and unifying East (lean) and West (agile) into a common language for systems and software development that is both lean "and" agile. In addition to SAFe case studies, late-breaking developments on the use of "Continuous Delivery," "DevOps," and bleeding-edge "Unstructured Web Databases" at Google and Amazon to automate large sections of the enterprise value stream will be discussed (which has been successfully used by some of the world's largest firms to boost organizational productivity by one or two orders of magnitude). When software engineering transforms to an Agile methodology, big changes are in store for Product Managers. The planning process becomes a regular occurrence instead of a once-a-year event. The requirements process morphs from lots of documentation up front to continuous conversations and progressive elaboration. All of these changes can wreak havoc on a Product Manager's schedule and can blur the lines of responsibility beyond recognition. The workload can increase more than 60%, especially if you have both Product Manager and Product Owner responsibilities.
In this session we will share successful techniques to adapt to Agile including: dealing with role conflict, adapting to global engineering teams, and organizational models. Presented at DocTrain East 2007 Conference by Steve Manning, The Rockley Group -- Reuse has been (and continues to be) a best practice for the technical communications and training communities. Many companies are struggling with big translation localization expenses. DITA is the word most used when you ask about hot trends in the industry. What do the three preceding sentences have in common? Simple. Component-based content is part of the solution.
So what is component-based content management? Thats what this session aims to help you understand. You will learn what component content management is, what the benefits are, and how it is currently being applied in different organizations. You also learn how a content component approach can help you solve your content issues.
How important is component-based content creation and management? It has taken over from DITA as the most talked about subject in documentation. It is being used in many companies who have followed traditional methodologies for creating things like technical documentation, training materials, help systems and so on. But in the push to do things faster, cheaper, more flexibly, and for more people, companies are discovering that by moving to a component based approach, they can do things faster, cheaper and more flexibly.
Some of the advantages they are gaining are in automating the production of outputs—getting PDF for print, PDF for online display, and HTML—with a single push of a button. Or, they are getting flexible content, where reuse is a matter of reconfiguring a list of topics, rather than cutting and pasting chunks of content between large binary files. Or they are beginning to manage extreme time frames, where panic used to be the order of the day come release time, and make release time something that is not so likely to turn hair gray.
This session will describe content component management in detail and help you grasp the concepts needed to figure out if a move to component-based content can help you solve your content challenges.

There are hundreds of software packages that call themselves Content Management Systems, from big, expensive enterprise content management systems to free open-source systems of various capabilities.
With so many choices, there has to be a system out there for you, right? But, how do you find it? With so many choices, the competition for your dollar is fierce and vendors are looking to close the sale. The effectiveness of your content management selection will depend on your ability to define the functionality you need in a content management system and to dig through the marketing speak of the vendors to find out exactly what their system offers. This session will equip you with the questions you need to ask initially and the questions you need ask to get to real truth.
Should be simple.
Now factor in that there are different categories of content management systems, like Web Content Management and Component Content Management, to manage different kinds of content like transactional content, business content, product content and persuasive content. They all have a slightly different emphasis on the functionality that is key to their role. You need to figure out if their functionality meets your needs.
Now factor in that there are over a thousand applications that refer to themselves as Content Management tools. That really makes it tough for the vendors. This presentation will throw a spotlight onto the single most common,
and most serious, reason why Content Management projects fail. In a
nutshell, too many projects become so focused on the technology they
want to deploy that they forget about what matters most - the content
and the people who use it. Real-life case studies will be used to
illustrate this problem. The optimism of the audience will be rebuilt
by introducing a proven solution to this issue with this being a call
to move the focus of CM project towards Content Oriented Architectures.
The most common mistake found in content management projects is rather
surprising. The reason most CM projects falter is that the project
team, and frequently its stakeholders, become unduly enamored with
some piece of technology and assume, or hope, that one or two
applications will erase all of the challenges surrounding the
creation, management, reuse and delivery of content. When a particular
collection of applications fail to deliver on the expectations, the
usual response is to insert even more applications. With each new
application that is introduced, a number of connectors and patches are
also added so that one tool can work with the others that are already
in place. This continues until, with seeming inevitability, these
projects crumble under the weight of growing system complexity. These
projects fail, in short, because, in becoming fixated on technology,
they essentially forget about their content.
This presentation will use a number of project cases studies, some
older and some exceedingly current, to illustrate the downward path
that most CM projects follow. While this might sound ominous, this
journey will actually arrive at a hopeful conclusion. If CM projects
place content at the center of their solution designs, adopting in
effect a Content Oriented Architecture (COA), it becomes possible for
projects to use technology, even exploit it, in ways that emphasize
helping authors, publishers and content users. Under this model, the
quality and usefulness of the content assets becomes the overriding
focus and where automation is introduced it is to either further
improve the quality of the content or to reduce the cost and effort
needed to achieve the desired results. Examples of successful projects
will be used to prove that Content Oriented Architectures are not
really new and that they do deliver results that endure over time.

visual software localization, translation workflow, and translation
business management, and showing how they are used today.
PASSOLO is a leading software technology for visual software
localization. Used worldwide to create software products in many
languages, PASSOLO is itself available in several languages. Pass
Engineering, a wholly owned subsidiary of SDL International, has
automated PASSOLO so as to use itself recursively to build alternate
language versions.

XML applications for publishers have largely failed to realize the
full potential inherent in the technology. While larger publishers
could make the investment necessary to realize significant return on
the use of XML technology, smaller enterprises simply could not, for a
number of reasons, but fundamentally because the startup costs and
ongoing costs of ownership were simply too high. The DITA standard
fundamentally changes the equation, bringing several unique features
that, together, serve to lower both the startup cost and ongoing
costs, making the use of XML for publishers much more affordable than
it ever has before. At the same time, advances in supporting
technologies important to Publishers, such as improved support for XML
in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office, powerful new XML search
and retrieval systems such as MarkLogic, and a new generation of lower-
cost XML editors, as serve to make the use of XML for Publishing
applications more attractive than it ever has been before.

The Hughes documentation team was producing numerous manuals with common content but also differences based on product models and audience. The team realized the traditional methods they were using were inefficient and were not reliable for producing consistent and accurate manuals. Hughes solved these problems through single sourcing and DITA and is now on track with a successful implementation.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
