- Conception rates in relation to the time from peak activity to insemination were checked on 4 different farms, with a total of over 6000 inseminations. “Time 0” is standing as identified by the SCR Heatime system. It can be seen that the highest conception rates across the 4 farms were achieved when the insemination was performed 8 to 16 hours from the activity peak. Even inseminating 16 to 24 hours after activity peak provides, on an average, conception rates of over 35%. Inseminations that were performed before the peak resulted in lower conception rates. This is actually the time that an alert farmer would see the first observational signs of heat!
- Rumination monitoring provides an answer for complete health management because it provides constant insight into key aspects of the health, reproduction and wellbeing status of individual cows and the whole herd. Specifically: Rumination is the most reliable sign of a happy and – more importantly – healthy cow. Cows normally ruminate for an average of 450-500 minutes per day; each cow has her own individual rumination habits and a change in her regular rumination is almost always meaningful. Rumination is the result of what the cow has eaten and how well she has been able to rest. It has been shown that it can serve as a very early indicator of future calving diseases, and as an early indicator for diseases like mastitis. When rumination drops this is a clear sign that the cow is uncomfortable and probably not well – or, in open cows, it is a sign of heat. A drop in rumination minutes is often seen before any drop in production. Management and nutritional changes affecting a group or the whole herd can be monitored and managed by monitoring the rumination averages and patterns of groups and the whole herd. Rumination has been shown to change by ration components, the physical characteristics of the ration and general management. Constant rumination monitoring and management can therefore optimize not only the individual lactation curve but also the whole herd production curve.

- Rumination also provides insight into treatment effectiveness and cow recovery. Each of the red bars displays the number of rumination minutes displayed by the cow in a period of two hours. The graph on the left shows rumination of the cow treated effectively for mastitis. We can see that the cow recovered her normal rumination levels within 10-12 hours. On the right- We see the rumination levels for a cow where initial treatment was ineffective. The cow did not recover to normal rumination levels. The diagnosis was reassessed and the cow was retreated – the second treatment was effective as shown by the rumination recovery rate. Rumination monitoring can provide insight in how a cow is recovering from vaccinations.
- The graph is showing the difference in rumination time of cows from two groups in in a research farm in Israel. The cows was arbitrary divided into these groups as part of a feeding trial. The cow were fed with similar TMR rations that differ only in the physical properties of the fiber (same content of fiber (NDF) in both rations. It can be clearly seen that after calving (the deep low), cows that were fed with longer fiber were ruminating more.
