This document discusses various filmmaking techniques used in the trailer for "The Fault in Our Stars" that the authors plan to mirror in their own film, including mid-paced editing, the use of close-ups and mid shots to illustrate emotion and relationships, matching the soundtrack to the emotions and actions, simple but effective mise en scene, and evoking a wide range of emotions that transition throughout.

STORYLINE, WE NEED TO RESEARCH FILMS
THAT ARE SIMILAR.

3. EDITING
The fault in our stars trailer has continual
editing which is between mid and fast
paced. We plan to mirror this in our film
to strike the balance between narrative,
action and credits.

4. CINEMATOGRAPHY
This trailer used lots of close-ups to
illustrate emotion as well as mid shots to
show friendship and wide shots to show
location.

5. SOUND
The soundtrack directly mirrors the
actions and emotions taking place. We
plan to do this also but we will need two
different soundtracks in order to make
this work as there will be a distinct volta
in our film.

6. MISE EN SCENE
The mise en scene in this film was basic
but effective. The costume, location and
props (excluding Hazel Grace’s
breathing apparatus) are all very simple
in order to show the abnormality of the
lead character.

7. EMOTION
This trailer evokes many emotional
responses throughout and flicks
between them whilst doing this. This is
something we have found interesting as
we believe it’s challenging to show a
wide range of emotions and return to
earlier ones.
