• The Fault in our Stars is a story narrated by a
teenage cancer patient called Hazel Grace who
falls in love with an amputee and ex-basket ball
player Augustus Waters.
• The genres of the film The Fault in our Stars is
Romance, Comedy drama and Drama.
• The Fault in our Stars practice this by having
teenage characters in the film.
• The story in the film is very different to other
cancer-related films as this story was based on the
cancer patient herself.
• Films rarely portray their story from the cancer
patients themselves, therefore this challenged the
conventions of the genre.
Narrative structure:
•Exposition – introducing characters
•Rising Action – when Augustus and
Hazel meet
•Climax – Their friendship becomes
more serious
•Falling Action – Gus falls ill
•Resolution – Pain is resolved by
Gus’s death.
Resolution
• Resolution is the part where most
of the conflicts, including the major
conflict, are resolved. In the
resolution, a new conflict may be.
Audience
• The Fault in our stars target a specific young
audience between the ages 15-18.
• The film appeals to this audience by introducing
characters from similar ages with similar
teenage interests like playing video games and
reading books.
• Covers a very emotional story from the
teenager’s perspective.
Movie certification...
The movie certificate of the film is PG-13.This means
that audiences over 13 years can view the film, this
specifically targets their teenage audience.
This film is suitable for teenagers over the age of 13 to
watch due to the film containing the following :
• Nudity
• Frightening/intense scenes : ie: cancer, death,
disability
• Alcohol/drugs/smoking
• Profanity
• Violence
Online Film Responses:
Overall, the film
had a very good
response from the
audience.
Mise-en-scene.
• Sound- the sound reflected the mood of the film. For
example when the teenagers were having fun at their
holiday, an upbeat music was used.
• Lighting- the film was set in a dull lighting area to
emphasise the tense feeling of the characters especially
during the death of a character.
• Camera shots/angles: There are a lot of wide shots that
are used, as well as close ups. There are also a variety of
mid shots that are used.
Reasons for film’s success:
• Before the film was created, a
book by John Green was written
and published in 2012 called The
Fault in our Stars.
• The book was very successful and
received numerous awards.
• This therefore guaranteed that the
film will be successful as well.
• During the marketing stage of the
film, people became more aware
of the film due to the social media
and mainly word of mouth.

The fault in our stars case study

  • 2. • The Fault in our Stars is a story narrated by a teenage cancer patient called Hazel Grace who falls in love with an amputee and ex-basket ball player Augustus Waters. • The genres of the film The Fault in our Stars is Romance, Comedy drama and Drama. • The Fault in our Stars practice this by having teenage characters in the film. • The story in the film is very different to other cancer-related films as this story was based on the cancer patient herself. • Films rarely portray their story from the cancer patients themselves, therefore this challenged the conventions of the genre.

Narrative structure: •Exposition – introducing characters •Rising Action – when Augustus and Hazel meet •Climax – Their friendship becomes more serious •Falling Action – Gus falls ill •Resolution – Pain is resolved by Gus’s death. Resolution • Resolution is the part where most of the conflicts, including the major conflict, are resolved. In the resolution, a new conflict may be.
  • 4. Audience • The Fault in our stars target a specific young audience between the ages 15-18. • The film appeals to this audience by introducing characters from similar ages with similar teenage interests like playing video games and reading books. • Covers a very emotional story from the teenager’s perspective.
  • 5. Movie certification... The movie certificate of the film is PG-13.This means that audiences over 13 years can view the film, this specifically targets their teenage audience. This film is suitable for teenagers over the age of 13 to watch due to the film containing the following : • Nudity • Frightening/intense scenes : ie: cancer, death, disability • Alcohol/drugs/smoking • Profanity • Violence
  • 6. Online Film Responses: Overall, the film had a very good response from the audience.
  • 7. Mise-en-scene. • Sound- the sound reflected the mood of the film. For example when the teenagers were having fun at their holiday, an upbeat music was used. • Lighting- the film was set in a dull lighting area to emphasise the tense feeling of the characters especially during the death of a character. • Camera shots/angles: There are a lot of wide shots that are used, as well as close ups. There are also a variety of mid shots that are used.

Reasons for film’s success: • Before the film was created, a book by John Green was written and published in 2012 called The Fault in our Stars. • The book was very successful and received numerous awards. • This therefore guaranteed that the film will be successful as well. • During the marketing stage of the film, people became more aware of the film due to the social media and mainly word of mouth.

  1. Exposition Exposition is the part of the film that introduces all the characters and settings in the story so the reader understands the rest of the book or story. In The Fault In Our Stars, the exposition is when Hazel is taken to the meetings with other kids with cancer Rising Action/ Inciting Incident In The Fault In Our Stars, the inciting moment is when Augustus is introduced and Hazel. The rising action is during the time that Hazel and Augustus start to know each other better and become really close to each other. One of the major events during the rising action, is when Augustus tells Hazel that they are going to Amsterdam, even though this moment can also be considered inciting incident to a new conflict, it does a major effect on the main climax. Climax the climax in The Fault In Our Stars, is when Hazel and Gus make their friendship become into a more serious relationship and start dating each other. In my opinion, this is the climax because it is a moment that is written to get the reader's hopes up and make them think that everything will be different since they have each other in a more serious way. The voice of the author, John Green, also changes after this moment. Falling Action The Falling Action is where the climax is reflected. During this process, a minor conflict may be resolved, a new conflict may be introduced and the characters may change. The Falling Action in this book, is when Gus and Hazel go back to the U.S. And Gus gets really sick. This is the falling action because it is where the love between Hazel and Gus is reflected in a higher level. A major event in the Falling action, is the "pre-funeral" that Gus decides to create because he knows he will die soon. Resolution Resolution is the part where most of the conflicts, including the major conflict, are resolved. In the resolution, a new conflict may be introduced if the book is part of a series, the ending doesn't have to be satisfying. The resolution in The Fault In Our Stars,
