MISE- EN- SCENE
Props
• Family photos
• Lamp
• Chair
• Paintings on the wall
• Window
• Mirror
Props explanation
In the final scene of the movie we can see these
props between the shots of mom shouting on
Babadook. This was used to show the space around
her and where she is. The fact that they all were
falling and breaking makes moms voice sound more
powerful, stronger and deeper so it makes her feel
more powerful than the actual Babadook.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Costume
Bloody/dirty night dress, dirty face and messed up
hair (mom)
Costume explanation
Mom: In the beginning of the movie mom
was with the clean greyish night dress which
shows her unpleasant life with fear which is
very dull but she is still innocent but by the
end of the movie the same night dress was
now covered in blood and dirty to show that
her innocents is ruined now and she was
part of evilness.
MISE-EN SCENE
Costume
Dirty shirt, black dirty trousers, bloody and dirty
face ( child)
Costume explanation
Boy: Before the final scene came in the
boy was dressed up in clean black and
grey nightwear which could represent
boys emotion as stressed, fear and
depressed mood inside him. At the end of
the final scene the dirt on his nightwear
could present washed away stress and
gaining bigger trust as the nightwear
colours become very faded.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Costume
Black suit, Black shoes, black hat, creepy
face (Babadook)
Costume explanation
Babadook was dressed in black
because he is a night creature
and it is almost invisible because
he is actually growing inside you.
The other reason is that we don’t
actually know what is under the
costume, that way it keeps
him/her mysterious monster/ghost
and get audience thinking and
excited to see him/her.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Setting
Moms bedroom
Setting explanation
The final scene of the movie happened in
mom bedroom for most of the time
because that’s where everything started
and she is the one who was the actual
victim of the Babadook.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Setting
Living room
Setting explanation
After everything has finished mom and
child came back to the living room
because every time they were in living
room before Babadook was locked it
was always a place for calmness and
peace, there was no scenes when they
were fighting in the living room. So that
scene represented coming back to the
peace.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Setting
Living room
Setting explanation
Because it is a new beginning
this scene shows that that text
behind the action (Happy
Birthday) shows not that it is
just child's birthday but show a
new birth to both of them in
their life. Although, we can’t
clearly see the words Happy
and Birthday which might mean
that their story is still not over.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Lighting
Dark, night lighting, moonlight
Lighting explained
The moonlight reflects
more on her face which
makes her look like an
angry animal and changes
her face form. Darker
background doesn’t
distract audience and we
are able to focus on her
emotions.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Lighting
Shadow lighting, noir
Lighting explanation
This type of lighting
directs the character
(mom) to come closer
and show that in that
spotlight it should be her.
MISE-EN-SCENE
Lighting
Natural day light
Lighting explanation
After the final scene the lighting changes
from dark, dull, moonlight to light, sunny
and very peaceful lighting. Although it is still
a little bit dull which makes it very
mysterious and shows that there is more
unanswered questions about the story.
SOUND
In the babdook movie the whole way
through they used digetic sound so that
the whole film can look and feel realistic
and more scarier and the way through
the movie audience don’t know what is
going to happen next because it doesn’t
show through soundtracks.
Until this part editor used a little bit of
non digetic sound for few second to
build up intension and makes
audience think that something scary
is about to happen.
CAMERA
Medium close up
As the character starts
shouting at the Babadook,
the whole scene was a
mid shot to really focus
on character emotions
and to see her
movements in details so it
shows her anger .
Close up
In some parts of
scenes there were
close ups on
different objects to
show that
everything is
shaking and
breaking around so
that audience can
expect death of a
character or
something scary to
happen.
Wide shot
In between shots of the
woman there was a
wide shots of the actual
character Babadook to
reveal more of his look
and the size to make it
look creepy and show
with who mother is
dealing with.
CAMERA
Cut-in
In this scene we can see a cut-
in which shows a different part
of the subject. At this case we
can see a boy by the woman's
stomach and he is squeezing
her which makes it look like
the horror is still not finished
and something unexpected is
about to happen.
Wide shot
This scene represents wide
shot which means we can see
the subject takes almost a full
frame. By that it builds up
intension between the scene
and audience so that when
she starts walking up to the
camera it will make audience
to expect that the worst part is
finished but it tricks that way.
Birdseye shot
In this part of the movie we
can see a birdseye shot
which means the subject is
shown from the top. It was
used to give an audience a
view of Babadook size and
to show that he is the
scariest in the movie
although we don’t really see
it but we imagine it.
CAMERA
POV (point of view) shot
By the end of the final
Babadook scene we can find
a POV shot which was to
show where the character is
going and give another hint of
a character look .
Two-shot
In this part of the movie there
was used two-shot when two
subject are in the frame with a
mid shot. In terms of meaning it
tries to show the close
relationship between mother
and a son and there is no more
Babadoook just they two and
everything is finished and by
this close hug it show that they
congratulate each other on
surviving.
Weather shot
In this part we can see a
weather shot which represents
happiness and happily ever
after.
CAMERA
Close up
In this case close up was used
to show the character emotion
in very close frame so that we
can understand how she is
feeling without her saying a
word
EDITING
Continuity editing
In this case scenario we can see that there was
continuity which means it allows audience to concentrate
on the narrative and that’s why it was used in this scene
so that people can concentrate not just on the character
emotions but on the aggressive conversation that is
between character and the Babadook because that is
the most important part.
Transitions
Between this scene there were a lot of
transitions on a different objects and goes by a
straight cut. This was to give a feel for the
audience how does the set looks like and what
is happening around.
EDITING
Cut on action
In this scene we can clearly see cut on action
which means we can experience both character
emotions at the same time. In this case we can
experience child's and mother emotions for a
quick few seconds to show that she is not going
to give up her child for anything.
Zoom
This scene shows the zoom
which builds up the intention.
EDITING
Fade
Last part of the scene they used fade
to end the scene and show a new
chapter of the movie. In terms of
story it is to show new chapter of their
life.

Micro analysis

  • 1. MICRO ANALYSIS ‘The Babadook’ (1:18:00) – (1:23:00) Gabija Janickaite
  • 2. MISE- EN- SCENE Props • Family photos • Lamp • Chair • Paintings on the wall • Window • Mirror Props explanation In the final scene of the movie we can see these props between the shots of mom shouting on Babadook. This was used to show the space around her and where she is. The fact that they all were falling and breaking makes moms voice sound more powerful, stronger and deeper so it makes her feel more powerful than the actual Babadook.
  • 3. MISE-EN-SCENE Costume Bloody/dirty night dress, dirty face and messed up hair (mom) Costume explanation Mom: In the beginning of the movie mom was with the clean greyish night dress which shows her unpleasant life with fear which is very dull but she is still innocent but by the end of the movie the same night dress was now covered in blood and dirty to show that her innocents is ruined now and she was part of evilness.
  • 4. MISE-EN SCENE Costume Dirty shirt, black dirty trousers, bloody and dirty face ( child) Costume explanation Boy: Before the final scene came in the boy was dressed up in clean black and grey nightwear which could represent boys emotion as stressed, fear and depressed mood inside him. At the end of the final scene the dirt on his nightwear could present washed away stress and gaining bigger trust as the nightwear colours become very faded.
  • 5. MISE-EN-SCENE Costume Black suit, Black shoes, black hat, creepy face (Babadook) Costume explanation Babadook was dressed in black because he is a night creature and it is almost invisible because he is actually growing inside you. The other reason is that we don’t actually know what is under the costume, that way it keeps him/her mysterious monster/ghost and get audience thinking and excited to see him/her.
  • 6. MISE-EN-SCENE Setting Moms bedroom Setting explanation The final scene of the movie happened in mom bedroom for most of the time because that’s where everything started and she is the one who was the actual victim of the Babadook.
  • 7. MISE-EN-SCENE Setting Living room Setting explanation After everything has finished mom and child came back to the living room because every time they were in living room before Babadook was locked it was always a place for calmness and peace, there was no scenes when they were fighting in the living room. So that scene represented coming back to the peace.
  • 8. MISE-EN-SCENE Setting Living room Setting explanation Because it is a new beginning this scene shows that that text behind the action (Happy Birthday) shows not that it is just child's birthday but show a new birth to both of them in their life. Although, we can’t clearly see the words Happy and Birthday which might mean that their story is still not over.
  • 9. MISE-EN-SCENE Lighting Dark, night lighting, moonlight Lighting explained The moonlight reflects more on her face which makes her look like an angry animal and changes her face form. Darker background doesn’t distract audience and we are able to focus on her emotions.
  • 10. MISE-EN-SCENE Lighting Shadow lighting, noir Lighting explanation This type of lighting directs the character (mom) to come closer and show that in that spotlight it should be her.
  • 11. MISE-EN-SCENE Lighting Natural day light Lighting explanation After the final scene the lighting changes from dark, dull, moonlight to light, sunny and very peaceful lighting. Although it is still a little bit dull which makes it very mysterious and shows that there is more unanswered questions about the story.
  • 12. SOUND In the babdook movie the whole way through they used digetic sound so that the whole film can look and feel realistic and more scarier and the way through the movie audience don’t know what is going to happen next because it doesn’t show through soundtracks. Until this part editor used a little bit of non digetic sound for few second to build up intension and makes audience think that something scary is about to happen.
  • 13. CAMERA Medium close up As the character starts shouting at the Babadook, the whole scene was a mid shot to really focus on character emotions and to see her movements in details so it shows her anger . Close up In some parts of scenes there were close ups on different objects to show that everything is shaking and breaking around so that audience can expect death of a character or something scary to happen. Wide shot In between shots of the woman there was a wide shots of the actual character Babadook to reveal more of his look and the size to make it look creepy and show with who mother is dealing with.
  • 14. CAMERA Cut-in In this scene we can see a cut- in which shows a different part of the subject. At this case we can see a boy by the woman's stomach and he is squeezing her which makes it look like the horror is still not finished and something unexpected is about to happen. Wide shot This scene represents wide shot which means we can see the subject takes almost a full frame. By that it builds up intension between the scene and audience so that when she starts walking up to the camera it will make audience to expect that the worst part is finished but it tricks that way. Birdseye shot In this part of the movie we can see a birdseye shot which means the subject is shown from the top. It was used to give an audience a view of Babadook size and to show that he is the scariest in the movie although we don’t really see it but we imagine it.
  • 15. CAMERA POV (point of view) shot By the end of the final Babadook scene we can find a POV shot which was to show where the character is going and give another hint of a character look . Two-shot In this part of the movie there was used two-shot when two subject are in the frame with a mid shot. In terms of meaning it tries to show the close relationship between mother and a son and there is no more Babadoook just they two and everything is finished and by this close hug it show that they congratulate each other on surviving. Weather shot In this part we can see a weather shot which represents happiness and happily ever after.
  • 16. CAMERA Close up In this case close up was used to show the character emotion in very close frame so that we can understand how she is feeling without her saying a word
  • 17. EDITING Continuity editing In this case scenario we can see that there was continuity which means it allows audience to concentrate on the narrative and that’s why it was used in this scene so that people can concentrate not just on the character emotions but on the aggressive conversation that is between character and the Babadook because that is the most important part. Transitions Between this scene there were a lot of transitions on a different objects and goes by a straight cut. This was to give a feel for the audience how does the set looks like and what is happening around.
  • 18. EDITING Cut on action In this scene we can clearly see cut on action which means we can experience both character emotions at the same time. In this case we can experience child's and mother emotions for a quick few seconds to show that she is not going to give up her child for anything. Zoom This scene shows the zoom which builds up the intention.
  • 19. EDITING Fade Last part of the scene they used fade to end the scene and show a new chapter of the movie. In terms of story it is to show new chapter of their life.
