Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media products develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products ?
Format Conventions - Teaser Trailer
Length- They are typically shorted
than a main trailer, between 30
and 90 seconds
• Our teaser trailer was 55
seconds long which falls into
the conventional time for a
teaser trailer. Our rough cut
was 1.52, which is longer than
the conventional teaser trailer
length, so we knew we had to
cut it down as it was currently
more like a full trailer.
Montage- Within a trailer a common
technique used is montage editing, this is a
technique in film editing in which a series of
short shots are edited into a sequence to
condense space, time, and information.
When creating a trailer you don’t want to
give too much of the storyline away as there
need to be an enigma created to make an
audience want to come watch the entire
film.
Format Conventions- Teaser Trailer
Voiceovers- These are typically
used to help tell the story as well
as inform people of any important
information
• We used voiceovers in our
teaser trailer to help narrate
what Casey is writing in her
journal and narrate the story
of her life. I think this was very
effective as we were able to
see the story unfold as well as
hear what happened from
Casey's perspective. The
Voiceover enabled us to tell
the audience information
which they needed without
giving too much away.
Music- This is also typically used
to keep the audience engaged and
help to tell the viewers how they
should be feeling.
We used music throughout out
teaser trailer to help show the
audience the emotions that they
should be feeling and to try make
them sympathise with Casey.
I think that the music worked
really well with our film and it
helped to tell the audience the
genre and help tell the story of
Casey's' life.
Titles- These are very important in
giving the audience information which
they will need to know more about the
story and what they are going to watch.
Some of the titles used in teaser trailers
which were also used in ours include:
• Film title, Release Date
and Informative messages.
Some of the titles which we used in our
teaser trailer were influenced by the
film 'Cyberbully' which we got a lot of
our film ideas from.
Format Conventions- Film Magazine
The film magazine which we
wanted to base our cover on
was 'Studio'. Although this
magazine is no longer sold we
thought it was a good one to
use as it mainly focused on
films more targeted on women,
and genres such as teen
dramas.
House Style- We tried to
incorporate the house style
of 'Studio' into our
magazine cover by
following the basic layout
and colours which were
used in the original
Some of the conventions of
a magazine cover include:
• A clear title
• A tagline for the
magazine
• Inside features
• Date of magazine
• Main focuses
• A main image
Our magazine followed closely to
the typical conventions of a
magazine cover and also to the
house style of the original 'Studio'
cover. We were really pleased
with the final result as we felt as
well as making our genre clear it
also looked like a real life
magazine which was our overall
goal
Comparison to Real Media Examples...
Magazine Title
Main Image
Magazine Focus
Magazine Tag Line
Inside Features
Inside Extras
Format Conventions – Poster
The main conventions of a
film poster include:
• A clear Title
• Main image
• Tagline
• Billing block
• Release date
• Starring actors
We wanted to make
the genre of our film
clear through the use
of colours used. We
mainly used pink blue
and yellow throughout
the poster and
magazine cover to
help indicate that the
film is a teen drama
The layout for our poster
was influenced by the film
poster for 'Cyberbully'.
Although we used differed
colours and positioning of
the main image, the text is
all very similar in its fonts
and layout..
Genre Conventions
Character Stereotypes-
There are a number of stereotypes
used in teen dramas commonly. For
example the 'popular cheerleader'
and the 'bully jock'. We used two
stereotypes in our teaser trailer
however, we didn’t want to make
them too obvious as we still wanted
to stress the seriousness of
cyberbullying. As we has a bully and
a victim in our teaser trailer this in
itself is very typical of a teen drama.
We also had the bully as the 'popular
girl' which is also typical of this
genre.
Setting- the typical settings
in a teen drama include;
High school, a bedroom, a
classroom, in the hallway
or in a town. In our film we
had both a bedroom, a hall
way and a classroom
feature in our trailer,
making it conventional to
our genre.
Genre Conventions
Iconography-
Technology is a typical type of
iconography used in teen dramas.
We used mobile phones in our
teaser trailer which worked really
well to tell part of the story without
using dialogue. We also included
lockers which are very common in
teen dramas' as they help establish
the setting of a high school.
Style
The style which we used to
make our genre clear was
very similar to the mean girls
poster. We wanted to use
bright colours like pinks,
blue and yellows to make the
teen drama genre clear.
Issues and Problems
Within a teen drama it is very
conventional to have an issue or
a problem occur within the
story line. It is very common for
this to be within a
friendship. This occurs in film
such as Mean Girls, Reality
High and Cyberbully. Our film
contains the issue of bullying,
which is very common in this
genre.
Institutional Conventions
Hollywood Blockbuster
Starring actors
One of the main selling points for a film is
the actors involved. Hollywood are able to
hire some of the top actors in Britain or
America to star in their film, as they have
such as big name.
Hollywood films are also able to advertise
their films well, to get the largest audience .
This may include numerous trailers and
posters. As they are such a large company
they are able to put the advertisement in
various places such as in public locations, on
YouTube, in TV programme advert slots as
well as on social media platforms
Low Budget Film
Low budget films don’t have the
advantage of being part of a well-
known company. This means it's
harder for their films to be
recognised as they aren't able to
get as famous actors. They also
won't be able to advertise their
films as publicly. they are likely to
only be able to advertise their work
through the use of social media.
From looking back at our
teaser trailer, it doesn’t seem
like it would be a large
blockbuster film but more of
an independent film, maybe
that is only released
and available on Netflix. This
is because there is only a
very small cast of three main
characters and the filming
techniques are not as
professional as a large
blockbuster film.

Evaluation q1 katie 2

  • 1. Evaluation Question 1 In what ways does your media products develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?
  • 2. Format Conventions - Teaser Trailer Length- They are typically shorted than a main trailer, between 30 and 90 seconds • Our teaser trailer was 55 seconds long which falls into the conventional time for a teaser trailer. Our rough cut was 1.52, which is longer than the conventional teaser trailer length, so we knew we had to cut it down as it was currently more like a full trailer. Montage- Within a trailer a common technique used is montage editing, this is a technique in film editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information. When creating a trailer you don’t want to give too much of the storyline away as there need to be an enigma created to make an audience want to come watch the entire film.
  • 3. Format Conventions- Teaser Trailer Voiceovers- These are typically used to help tell the story as well as inform people of any important information • We used voiceovers in our teaser trailer to help narrate what Casey is writing in her journal and narrate the story of her life. I think this was very effective as we were able to see the story unfold as well as hear what happened from Casey's perspective. The Voiceover enabled us to tell the audience information which they needed without giving too much away. Music- This is also typically used to keep the audience engaged and help to tell the viewers how they should be feeling. We used music throughout out teaser trailer to help show the audience the emotions that they should be feeling and to try make them sympathise with Casey. I think that the music worked really well with our film and it helped to tell the audience the genre and help tell the story of Casey's' life. Titles- These are very important in giving the audience information which they will need to know more about the story and what they are going to watch. Some of the titles used in teaser trailers which were also used in ours include: • Film title, Release Date and Informative messages. Some of the titles which we used in our teaser trailer were influenced by the film 'Cyberbully' which we got a lot of our film ideas from.
  • 4. Format Conventions- Film Magazine The film magazine which we wanted to base our cover on was 'Studio'. Although this magazine is no longer sold we thought it was a good one to use as it mainly focused on films more targeted on women, and genres such as teen dramas. House Style- We tried to incorporate the house style of 'Studio' into our magazine cover by following the basic layout and colours which were used in the original Some of the conventions of a magazine cover include: • A clear title • A tagline for the magazine • Inside features • Date of magazine • Main focuses • A main image Our magazine followed closely to the typical conventions of a magazine cover and also to the house style of the original 'Studio' cover. We were really pleased with the final result as we felt as well as making our genre clear it also looked like a real life magazine which was our overall goal

Format Conventions – Poster The main conventions of a film poster include: • A clear Title • Main image • Tagline • Billing block • Release date • Starring actors We wanted to make the genre of our film clear through the use of colours used. We mainly used pink blue and yellow throughout the poster and magazine cover to help indicate that the film is a teen drama The layout for our poster was influenced by the film poster for 'Cyberbully'. Although we used differed colours and positioning of the main image, the text is all very similar in its fonts and layout..
  • 7. Genre Conventions Character Stereotypes- There are a number of stereotypes used in teen dramas commonly. For example the 'popular cheerleader' and the 'bully jock'. We used two stereotypes in our teaser trailer however, we didn’t want to make them too obvious as we still wanted to stress the seriousness of cyberbullying. As we has a bully and a victim in our teaser trailer this in itself is very typical of a teen drama. We also had the bully as the 'popular girl' which is also typical of this genre. Setting- the typical settings in a teen drama include; High school, a bedroom, a classroom, in the hallway or in a town. In our film we had both a bedroom, a hall way and a classroom feature in our trailer, making it conventional to our genre.
  • 8. Genre Conventions Iconography- Technology is a typical type of iconography used in teen dramas. We used mobile phones in our teaser trailer which worked really well to tell part of the story without using dialogue. We also included lockers which are very common in teen dramas' as they help establish the setting of a high school. Style The style which we used to make our genre clear was very similar to the mean girls poster. We wanted to use bright colours like pinks, blue and yellows to make the teen drama genre clear. Issues and Problems Within a teen drama it is very conventional to have an issue or a problem occur within the story line. It is very common for this to be within a friendship. This occurs in film such as Mean Girls, Reality High and Cyberbully. Our film contains the issue of bullying, which is very common in this genre.
  • 9. Institutional Conventions Hollywood Blockbuster Starring actors One of the main selling points for a film is the actors involved. Hollywood are able to hire some of the top actors in Britain or America to star in their film, as they have such as big name. Advertisement Hollywood films are also able to advertise their films well, to get the largest audience . This may include numerous trailers and posters. As they are such a large company they are able to put the advertisement in various places such as in public locations, on YouTube, in TV programme advert slots as well as on social media platforms Low Budget Film Low budget films don’t have the advantage of being part of a well- known company. This means it's harder for their films to be recognised as they aren't able to get as famous actors. They also won't be able to advertise their films as publicly. they are likely to only be able to advertise their work through the use of social media. From looking back at our teaser trailer, it doesn’t seem like it would be a large blockbuster film but more of an independent film, maybe that is only released and available on Netflix. This is because there is only a very small cast of three main characters and the filming techniques are not as professional as a large blockbuster film.
