Discussion QuestionHave you ever looked at the quotes in a news s.docxmickietanger
Discussion Question:
Have you ever looked at the quotes in a news story and wondered what the reporter was trying to imply about the source?
I seem to find myself wondering all the time, especially in sports news and celebrity features. For example, the
Washington Post
did a piece on professional basketball player, Caron Butler, quoting a childhood friend as saying, “We used to see the big dudes come through, with their cars shining. We didn’t have nothing.” The late Bella Stumbo, of the
Los Angeles Times,
was sharply criticized for quoting the late Washington, D.C., mayor Marion Barry using words like "wanna" instead of "want to" and "I be sittin'" instead of "I'll be sitting" in
her profile
of the politician.
After you have read this week's assigned readings, please address this discussion prompt. What is a reporter’s obligation to his or her sources? His or her audience? Are quotes in the vernacular appropriate or inappropriate? Are they even ethical? How
are
we supposed to handle poor grammar and dialects in our quotes? What are some of the rules for quoting sources? Find and include other stories in your post that used a source's vernacular and tell us whether the quotes were handled appropriately or inappropriately and why you think so. What do you think the reporters were trying to accomplish by writing their stories this way? Would you have quoted these sources the same way or differently (explain)? What have you learned about interviewing? Have you any tips to share?
Peer Review 1:
I think this topic relates a lot to our discussion on what a “journalist” is and what sets them apart from pundits and bloggers, their obligation to present the truth. I can appreciate that Bella Stumbo chose to include the exact and direct quotes of Barry, accent and vernacular included. However, like all things there is a time, place, and reason. I believe that because Stumbo was writing a profile, she did the piece more justice by including the speech patterns. They show character and background in peripheral way. The rules for this week mentioned that grammatical mistakes should be used as they were spoken, but accents should not. There can be a fine line between those two. I’ve lived all over the world and I can tell you from experience, accents and vernacular combined can create something of a dialect. Regardless, we aren’t trying to be speech analysts, but writers. The audience and intention of the piece must always be considered. A running theme in the class has been to choose each word carefully, and if it doesn’t add to the story you don’t need it. For example, I found an article online that described Wendy Williams' reaction to a celebrity tryst:
‘It’s only been three weeks! And she’s 26! That’s old enough to understand—like, you don’t show your feelings on your sleeve in three weeks, you know? And he’s a 30-something.’
Here the writer is not only adding inflection or feeling by using multiple exclamation marks, but why add the “- li.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle

3. On the online newspaper website The Guardian, to find the article you must
either search the headline, or use the browse genre buttons, but this may take
longer to find as other stories about different things are added frequently. The
article is found here because the “what” is about politics of the World, but the
“who” is about the American president Donald Trump. The fact that it is about a
president, means it can easily be classed as a politics article, but it is more a world
issue than a politics issue which is why it is under “world”.
Search bar
Browsing genres buttons
4.
5. Instead of calling him the President of the US, or Trump, they
used his full name.
The Guardian quotes trump saying that he threatened to “totally
destroy” North Korea, this is to highlight the point of the article.
This is evidenced with the video below the headline.
In the headline they also use the word ‘threatened’ which is a
strong word to use, the definition of the word threaten is having
a hostile or deliberately frightening quality or manner.
The fact that the article is referencing Donald Trump and his
threats to “totally destroy North Korea” attracts an audience, this
is because Donald is a terrible president and people want to see
his latest mishap, it also makes teens want to read it as teen
humour has turned Donald Trump into a ‘meme’.
6.
7. The article in itself is about Donald Trump threatening
North Korea. The article is about a serious event and is
quite informative. There is therefore no, or very little
sensationalism in this article. The article occasionally
refers to Donald’s speech and quote what he says go
boost the points The Guardian is making. It is biased
as it doesn’t argue any other perspectives or point of
views, only arguing it in one way which appears to be
making Trump seem stupid and describing just what
happened.
8. The article seems quite formal so there doesn’t seem to be any slang in the article, there
are also no expletives in the place of where a bad word could be as there are none. There
are none in the videos and images that are displayed in this article.
The article seems to be written in lots of short paragraphs each consisting of only one or
two sentences, with only a few having three. But even with all the paragraphs, it makes
the article seem more pleasing to read and manages to stay organised which may also
help people to read, this is a good way to get more people to read it.
The article is written in third person which means it is not directly from the writers’ point
of view, this is because the article is about someone who the writer didn’t directly speak
to or come into contact with as they are analysing a speech that Donald Trump, performs
in response to an event.
The Target Audience is most likely aimed at adults 21+ this is because it is an article about
politics and not many kids and teens are that interested in politics.
The main influence for this type of media appears to be politics. Considering that
Donald Trump is in politics and is one of the most powerful men in the world, so when
Donald Trump threatens a hostile country to the USA, there will be a lot of news about it.
The article is more informative and seems to be like a discussion rather than for leisure so
it not filled with images and videos, it only appears to have one of each, which is another
reason why teens and kids may not be a part of the target audience here.
9.
10. The article is rather scarce of images and videos, only having one
of each, but this is only to be expected considering the article is
more informative. Both the image and the video are relative to
the topic;
The video is important because it contains the part of the speech
relevant to the actual news story in focus. The Guardian will have
had provided this video as evidence for what they are trying to
say.
The image is a picture of a few politicians with a caption “The
Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu (centre), was one of
the few to applaud the US president’s stance on the Iran nuclear
deal.” This leads us to believe that the majority of the politicians
present thought of Trumps plans as a bad idea and gave him no
praise, and only a few politicians thought otherwise.
11. In the first half of the article, the speech mainly
focuses on what Trump alone said, but as we go along
more quotes about what other presidents and
politicians had said about Trump’s speech, some with
him and some against him.
13. On the online newspaper website The Daily Star,
the article can be found under travel and
adventure. This is travel because it is in a different
country and adventure because it is in a cave away
from a town/city.
14.
15. The article says “Man spent 25 years in this cave”, to a
reader this would suggest he would never leave the
cave and implies he lived in the cave for 25 years. This
makes the headline seem exaggerated for
sensationalism.
The headline also says “you won’t believe what’s
inside”, which makes people want to read it more as it
engages the reader leaving them wondering what
could possibly be in the cave, making them want to
find out and then leads them to reading the entire
article.
16.
17. The Daily Star is going on to describe a cave full of art and
artistic carvings in the walls of the cave and the man who
spent 25 years on it. It keeps positive about his work
showing off the incredible art and making sure this point is
brought across. There isn’t exactly any bias, this is because
the main article is formed from a video, interviewing the
artist and showing the cave, so the article is more of an
extra description to give people more depth and what the
video may not have covered. This kind of story is perfect for
general interest as it is not an urgent matter yet this is a
very interesting article that I feel many people would want
to read, it will have no specific age for it’s target audience,
however it’s main target audience will be lovers of art and
creation and just interesting things.
18. The text in this article seems quite formal as there is no swearing, slang or any
other informal words in the article.
The are no proper paragraphs in this article as most of them barely exceed one
line. This may be due to most of the article being explained in the video at the
start.
The article is written in third person as there are no uses of “I” or “me” etc. Even
though there is a video on a interviewer interviewing the artist in the video,
this doesn’t effect the article.
The article is most likely aimed at a niche audience of people into art as the
cave has been converted into a massive piece of art.
The main influence of the article appears to be art as the cave is all artwork.
The article seems to be informing us in a nice excited kind of way as if the
reporter is shouting “oh my god guys!! Get this!! This is Incredible right?!?!”
which means it is not a serious issue and more of a story for general interest.
This may be why the main content of the article is images and a video with only
a small amount of text in the article.
19. The main content of the article appears to images,
with a video lasting over 5 minutes explaining the
story in more detail than the article itself which may
explain why not much text is in the article.
There are lots of images about the cave relative to the
story and a slideshow of others.
The fact that the majority content is made up of
images means that the article is more for leisure rather
than informing news.
20. In the article, there is a video interviewing the cave
artist, but the small amount of text in the article keeps
things simple quoting the artist only a few times to
what he said in the video
21.
22. Similarities Differences
Both articles are in third person. The genre for The Telegraph’s article
is politics and world. Whereas the
genre for The Daily Star’s article is
Travel and Adventure.
Both articles are formal. The target audience for The
Telegraph’s article is most likely
adults 21 and older, whereas The
Daily Star’s article is aimed at
whoever is into art.
Both formats are similar as they both
go, Headline, video, text, images text.
The Daily Star’s article has more
images and less text, whereas the
Telegraph’s article has more text than
anything else.
Both articles are expected to be
formatted as they are in relation to
their genres.
The Telegraph uses one image to
show someone who is reacting to
Trump’s speech. Whereas the Daily
Star’s article uses multiple show just
how good the art cave is.
