The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has threatened to ban Facebook and YouTube in Turkey following local elections in March. A leaked audio recording of a phone call between Erdoğan and his son went viral on social media, prompting calls for Erdoğan's resignation. Erdoğan claims the recording was fabricated by his political enemies, including Fethullah Gülen, and that social media sites have been abused. When asked directly if a ban of these sites was planned, Erdoğan responded "Included." The document then provides a rewritten version of the news story targeted at a younger audience and analyzes why the story was chosen according to news values.
2. 1: NEWS STORY
part 1 original storyTurkish Prime minister may ban Facebook
The Turkish prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said
Facebook and YouTube could be banned following local
elections in March after leaked tapes of an alleged phone call
between him and his son went viral, prompting calls for his
resignation.
Erdoğan claims social media sites have been abused by his
political enemies, in particular his former ally US-based Turkish
Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen, who, he says, is behind a stream
of "fabricated" audio recordings posted on the internet
purportedly revealing corruption in his inner circle.
“We are determined on this subject. We will not leave this nation
at the mercy of YouTube and Facebook," Erdoğan said in an
interview late on Thursday with the Turkish broadcaster ATV.
"We will take the necessary steps in the strongest way."
Asked if the possible barring of these sites was included in
planned measures, he said: "Included.”

part 2 re-written story
Facebook BANNED!
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Turkish Prime Minister, has said that he may ban
Facebook and YouTube. A tape of him talking to his son has gone viral prompting
these actions. He denies that the tapes are real saying that it was “fabricated.” As
well as a social media outlet, Facebook and YouTube has been used as way of
expressing political views, so by banning it for these reasons could be seen as
stopping there freedom of speech.
It is important to point out that at the moment no actions have been put in place to
ban these social media sites, but Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that these actions
are deemed necessary. We use these sites in our day to day lives but what would
it be like if it where banned in our country? And what personal and political
impacts would it cause?
4. 2: NEWS STORY
ANALYZED
I think this story is news worthy and I have chosen it for 3 reasons relating to
Galtung and Ruge‟s news values. It is a proximity story as it is based on social
media which is something my demographic use a lot and care about. It is also a
recent and unique story as it has come out in the past few days and is quite
unusual which would make you want to learn about. I have changed the story to
make it targeted at a younger audience by doing a number of things. Firstly I have
made the sentences less long-winded by making shorter sentences and adding
commas. I also made it more inclusive by using phrases such as „we‟ when
referring to the demographic and using less formal language but not talking down
to the reader. I also still used a varied vocabulary making the audience feel less
patronized and more mature and not talked down to. Also I renamed the title
giving it a sharper, shorter title that intrigues the readers making them want to
read more. I also added rhetorical questions at the end to both directly talk to the
audience and make them think more about it but done in a way not to patronize
them.

6. 4: NEWS WEBSITE
3 STORIES
STORY 1: SOUTHBANK SKATE PARK INDANGER
I have chosen this story because it is about a local issue that teens care about as it is
related to things they do and associate with. Also it is an important issue in our local
community so is a good choice for a news story for my website as that is the style of
news I want to cover.
STORY 2: WINTER PARALYMPICS START WITH A BANG
This story is a global news story and is very imperative to cover as young people need
to know about things happening internationally and not just locally. Also it is something
teens would not necessarily read about but should be educated on as it is multi-
national.
STORY 3: MALAYSIAN AIRPLANE STILL MISSING
I have chosen this story because it is both intriguing and important story that come out
recently. It is a story that I think teens would want to learn about and understand what
is going on which I would notified and update on in terms of hard news. It is also a lot
more serious than the other 2 stories I have chosen as it is important to cover different
kinds of stories so the audience can get full news experience (e.g: soft news/hard
news, serious/non-serious, local/global)
8. NEWS WEBSITE
DESIGN ANALYZED
Use of different
colours make the
website look inviting
vibrant without
looking too childish
The isometric boxes for each
type of news story gives the
website an ease of navigation so
new comers to the website can
easily find their way around it.
This makes more inviting as they
know where to find the
information they want.
The editorial view point I
have chosen, highlights
news stories the target
audience would be
interested in. It
incorporates hard news
but in a way that is both
engaging and informative
for teenagers
I have broken down the website to the
conventions of other news websites which I have
researched to give my site a sense of authority. I
have done this by adding a large title in the top
middle of the screen, as well as a date.
Underneath the title is the navigation bar,
highlighting the key parts of my site
The Forum is added to
exploit the social media
aspect of the site which is
a key to how the target
audience use the
website. It gives the
audience a sense of
ownership as they can
discuss issues, which in
turn makes them more
involved.
