(1) A random variable is a function that assigns a real number observation to each outcome of a random experiment. Its domain is all possible outcomes and its range is all possible observations.
(2) Common continuous random variables include the uniform, exponential, and Gaussian (normal) distributions. The Gaussian distribution describes outcomes that are the result of many independent factors adding together.
(3) Probability distributions of random variables are characterized by the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the probability density function (PDF). The CDF gives the probability that a random variable is less than or equal to a value, while the PDF is the derivative of the CDF and describes the relative likelihood of different outcomes.
We propose a new stochastic first-order algorithmic framework to solve stochastic composite nonconvex optimization problems that covers both finite-sum and expectation settings. Our algorithms rely on the SARAH estimator and consist of two steps: a proximal gradient and an averaging step making them different from existing nonconvex proximal-type algorithms. The algorithms only require an average smoothness assumption of the nonconvex objective term and additional bounded variance assumption if applied to expectation problems. They work with both constant and adaptive step-sizes, while allowing single sample and mini-batches. In all these cases, we prove that our algorithms can achieve the best-known complexity bounds. One key step of our methods is new constant and adaptive step-sizes that help to achieve desired complexity bounds while improving practical performance. Our constant step-size is much larger than existing methods including proximal SVRG schemes in the single sample case. We also specify the algorithm to the non-composite case that covers existing state-of-the-arts in terms of complexity bounds.Our update also allows one to trade-off between step-sizes and mini-batch sizes to improve performance. We test the proposed algorithms on two composite nonconvex problems and neural networks using several well-known datasets.
We provide a review of the recent literature on statistical risk bounds for deep neural networks. We also discuss some theoretical results that compare the performance of deep ReLU networks to other methods such as wavelets and spline-type methods. The talk will moreover highlight some open problems and sketch possible new directions.

Agrawal and Vinay [FOCS 2008] showed how any polynomial size arithmetic circuit can be thought of as a depth four arithmetic circuit of subexponential size. The resulting circuit size in this simulation was more carefully analyzed by Koiran [TCS 2012] and subsequently by Tavenas [MFCS 2013]. We provide a simple proof of this chain of results. We then abstract the main ingredient to apply it to formulas and constant depth circuits, and show more structured depth reductions for them.In an apriori surprising result, Raz [STOC 2010] showed that for any $n$ and $d$, such that $\omega(1) \leq d \leq O(logn/loglogn)$, constructing explicit tensors $T: [n] \rightarrow F$ of high enough rank would imply superpolynomial lower bounds for arithmetic formulas over the field F. Using the additional structure we obtain from our proof of the depth reduction for arithmetic formulas, we give a new and arguably simpler proof of this connection. We also extend this result for homogeneous formulas to show that, in fact, the connection holds for any d such that $\omega(1) \leq d \leq n^{o(1)}$. After all, you can see yourself drawing finite triangles to discover slope, so why is the derivative so important? Its importance lies in the fact that many physical entities such as velocity, acceleration, force and so on are defined as instantaneous rates of change of some other quantity. The derivative can give you a precise intantaneous value for that rate of change and lead to precise modeling of the desired quantity.
