Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) are composed of autonomous mobile nodes that form dynamically without fixed infrastructure, allowing for multi-hop routing and self-directed communication. They are applicable in various fields such as military communications, disaster recovery, and home networking, but face challenges like packet collisions due to the shared transmission media. Solutions to these challenges include various media access control protocols and routing mechanisms, both proactive and reactive.
