Mitosis is the process of cell division that results in two daughter cells having the same number and type of chromosomes as the parent cell. It has four main phases - prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. During prophase, the chromosomes condense and the mitotic spindle forms. In metaphase, the chromosomes align along the center of the cell. In anaphase, the chromosomes are pulled towards the poles by the spindle fibers. Telophase involves the chromosomes decondensing and dividing the cytoplasm. Mitosis plays an important role in growth, development, and repair of organisms.
