Mini beasts, or invertebrates, are animals without backbones or internal skeletons. They make up the most numerous type of animal in the world, with over 25,000 species found in Britain alone. Unlike vertebrates which have backbones, invertebrates have soft, bendy bodies and many have hard shells or exoskeletons covering their bodies to provide protection. Examples given are insects and spiders, which have thin, strong exoskeletons that allow them to move more quickly than other mini beasts.
