This document discusses the difference between having a "cause mindset" and an "effect mindset". Having a cause mindset means taking control and responsibility for your life circumstances, while an effect mindset means reacting passively to external factors. It provides steps to shift from an effect to a cause mindset, such as recognizing negative self-talk, choosing to interpret challenges differently, responding to the negative voice with a growth perspective, and taking action aligned with a cause mindset. The overall message is that people have a choice in how they approach life and can train themselves to be more proactive and in control of their outcomes.

10 Habits of Emotionally Strong People from The Sales Floor Weekly November 10th Issue. To increase your mental strength, you simply need to change your outlook. When hard times hit, people with mental strength suffer just as much as everyone else. The difference is that they understand that life’s challenging moments offer valuable lessons. In the end, it’s these tough lessons that build the strength you need to succeed. Developing mental strength is all about habitually doing the things that no one else is willing to do. If you aren’t doing the following things on a regular basis, you should be, for these are the habits that mentally strong people rely on.
Before deciding on a course of action, prudent managers evaluate the situation confronting them. Unfortunately, some managers are cautious to a fault – taking costly steps to defend against unlikely outcomes. Others are overconfident – underestimating the range of potential outcomes. And still, others are highly impressionable – allowing memorable events in the past to dictate their view of what might be possible now.
These are just three of the well-documented psychological traps that afflict most managers at some point, assert authors John S. Hammond, Ralph L. Keeney, and Howard Raiffa in their 1998 article. Still, more pitfalls distort reasoning ability or cater to our own biases. Examples of the latter include the tendencies to stick with the status quo, to look for evidence confirming one’s preferences, and to throw good money after bad because it’s hard to admit making a mistake.
Luckily, techniques exist to overcome each one of these problems. For instance, since the way a problem is posed can influence how you think about it, try to reframe the question in various ways and ask yourself how your thinking might change for each version. Even if we can’t eradicate the distortions ingrained in the way our minds work, we can build tests like this into our decision-making processes to improve the quality of the choices we make.

Here are 10 steps to taking a more proactive approach to personal branding.

The negative impact of poor self esteem can be seen in all aspects of one’s life and if you’re going through this rough phase, your health, profession and relationships, all are bound to suffer.
The good news is that this worldwide epidemic is identifiable and curable, and here's how..."
How To Overcome Challenges By Wayne Weathersby.pdfWayne Weathersby
Throughout our lives we face challenges in many types of situations. Do
you sometimes freeze up when faced with obstacles because you’re unsure
of what to do? If so, opportunities may pass you by because your resolve to
meet the challenge quickly disappears.
However, the good news is: you can pass any test you face on the way to
your goals!
Opportunities that once passed you by can be turned into stepping stones
on your way to victory. Once you add a few simple strategies to your
arsenal, you’ll be unstoppable on your path to success.
Even big challenges can be surpassed with a few simple techniques.
Overcoming these challenges will spur you on and encourage you to live
the life you were born to live. Instead of feeling fear, you’ll feel confident
when you approach these roadblocks.
It’s okay to feel fear, as long as you allow that fear to propel you
forward. The truth is, anything worth having comes with some setbacks
along the way and obstacles to overcome. Your willingness to face these
challenges head on will determine the level of success you achieve in
your life.
HOW TO OVERCOME CHALLENGES
The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is a powerful, definitive book describing timeless laws to help you be a great leader. In each chapter, John Maxwell goes straight to the heart of a profound leadership law, showing you the successes and failures of others and how you can apply the law in your life. If you’re a willing student, you can learn the 21 Laws and put them into practice. Once you apply these leadership laws, you will be encouraged, and your ability to lead will expand. You may not be able to perfect all 21 Laws, but by learning them you will be able to build a team to help support you in leading well.
How you influence others determines how they respond. All leaders have a preferred style that has worked well for them, but it can limit their ability to influence the people they need to.
Trust is the most fundamental building block of any relationship whether in business, politics, marriage, family or friendships. In the real world, trust signifies different things to different people but it frequently boils down to one point: trust is essential to your success.
This presentation sets out to answer three questions:
1. Do they need to be managed differently from the rest of your staff?
2. Are IT people really different from the rest of an organization’s employees?
3. That unkempt antisocial geek in the corner is your best programmer. Do you let him do what he does best or counsel him to fit your ideal employee profile?

Leadership and power are closely linked even though leadership is NOT about power or position. People follow people who are powerful. And because others follow, the person with power leads.

Mindset
Are you at Cause or Effect?
Every day you have a choice. You can choose to be at
cause for your life in spite of the circumstances or you
can be at the effect of those same circumstances.
One of the most common issues faced by people in their
lives and leadership is life happening. How you respond
makes a difference.

Cause and Effect Cycles
Do you want to be at cause for your life, or at the effect
of life happening to you?
If you genuinely want the latter... read no more, you are
in danger of gaining the former.
Are you like a thermometer? Reacting to the external
environment?
Or, are you like a thermostat, changing and adapting and
controlling what you can control to change the
environment?
I need to emphasise to you, that there is no right or
wrong here. Both being at cause and being at effect exist
simultaneously.
We cannot ever be completely and solely at cause for
ourselves..
Whilst both cycles exist and we cannot NOT be at some
effect of the outside world, it is recognizing that WE
HAVE A CHOICE to make.
5. Mindset Page 5
Mindset
Cause and Effect Cycles
Consider an everyday challenge or issue you deal with and tick the box on the side of each decision step
that is typical for you. Be completely honest with yourself. This is not what you would “like to be like” this is
how you really are:
Typically I take action anticipating a
change in the external environment
Typically I react to something external
happening
When facing obstacles I will
experiment as many times as needed
until I overcome the obstacle.
When facing obstacles I look for and
find ways to adapt until I avoid the
obstacle.
I strive to get the results I desire.
I am content when I get “good
enough” results.
I deliberately celebrate when I have
overcome the obstacle and gotten
the desired results.
I am often disappointed with the
results I get and myself.
I make sure that I learn from the
experience and consider how this
will help me in the future.
There is nothing that I can learn from
the experience. What happens,
happens. What will be, will be.
Most this side?
You are more at cause
Most this side?
You are more at effect.
Where can you choose to be more at
cause?
Let’s check where you are, most of the time. Now it’s
obvious which one you perhaps “should” be, but that’s
not the question. Where are you most of the time now?
Be honest with you.
If you are even tempted a little to “cheat” – you are
cheating yourself, not me. It doesn’t matter to me. It’s
your life, not mine. But if you think that you can fool
you, then you’re at the effect of something, I’m just not
sure what exactly.
Many of your more automated routine avoidance of
responsibility habits are not your fault exactly. Well, they
are, but you can, if you choose, blame your parents for
many of them.

Choosing to be at cause
Reacting and avoiding obstacles always appears to be
the easiest option. What the sign doesn’t tell you is that
one is a highway, the other a treacherous mountain pass
suitable for goats.
4 steps
Work in pairs
Share with your “coach” your biggest negative voice.
COACH – work through the steps with your buddy.
7. Mindset Page 7
Changing from Effect to Cause Mindset
Step1. Learn to hear your effect mindset "voice."
"Maybe I don't have the ability. Are you sure you can do it?"
"What if I fail—I’ll be a failure"
"People will laugh at me for thinking I had talent."
"If I don’t try, I can protect myself and keep my dignity."
Have you heard your inner voice with these or similar statements? Learn to hear your inner Effect
Mindset voice.
Obstacles will be there whatever you decide and whatever you do. When you meet a setback, your inner
voice might say:
"This would have been a snap if I really had the ability"
"I knew this was risky. Now everyone knows how useless I am"
"If I back out now and make excuses, maybe I can regain my dignity."
When criticised you may hear yourself say:
"It's not my fault. It was [something or someone else's] fault."
"Who do they think they are to tell me..."
Or maybe someone is giving you constructive feedback but you hear:
"You are a great disappointment. I thought that you were clever and talented but now I see that you are
not."
Step 2. Recognize that you have a choice.
Realise that how you interpret challenges, setbacks, and criticism is your choice. You can interpret them in
an effect mindset as signs that your fixed talents or abilities are lacking. Or you can interpret them in a
cause mindset as signs that you need to ramp up your strategies and effort, stretch yourself, and expand
your abilities. It’s up to you.
So as you face challenges, setbacks, and criticism, listen to the fixed mindset voice and...
8. Page 8 Mindset
Step 3. Talk back to it with a cause mindset voice.
As you approach a challenge:
THE EFFECT-MINDSET says “Are you sure you can do it? Maybe you don’t have the talent.”
THE CAUSE-MINDSET answers, “I’m not sure I can do it now, but I think I can learn to with time and effort.”
EFFECT MINDSET: “What if you fail—you’ll be a failure”
CAUSE MINDSET: “Most successful people had failures along the way.”
EFFECT MINDSET: “If you don’t try, you can protect yourself and keep your dignity.”
CAUSE MINDSET: “If I don’t try, I automatically fail. Where’s the dignity in that?”
As you hit a setback:
EFFECT MINDSET: “This would have been a snap if you really had talent.”
CAUSE MINDSET: “That is so wrong. Basketball wasn’t easy for Michael Jordan and science wasn’t easy
for Thomas Edison. They had a passion and put in tons of effort.
As you face criticism:
EFFECT MINDSET: “It’s not my fault. It was something or someone else’s fault.”
CAUSE MINDSET: “If I don’t take responsibility, I can’t fix it. Let me listen—however painful it is– and learn
whatever I can.”
Then...
Step 4. Take the cause mindset action.
Over time, which voice you heed becomes pretty much your choice. Whether you
take on the challenge wholeheartedly,
learn from your setbacks and try again
hear the criticism and act on it is now in your hands.
Practice hearing both voices, and practice acting on the growth mindset. See how you can make it work for
you.
