Italy has high rates of internet and smartphone usage. 42% of the Italian population are active social media users, spending an average of 2 hours per day on social platforms mostly through their smartphones. While mobile penetration has reached over 150% in Western Europe, it is only 67% in Africa. Italy has more smartphones than citizens, at 158% ownership. Facebook is the most used social network in Italy, with 83% of active users, followed by Google+ and Twitter. Nearly half of Italians use their smartphones to search for information online on a daily basis.
