2. What is the Internet?
• Internet is a vast network that connects users all over the world. Internet users
can share information and communicate from anywhere with an Internet
connection.
• The Internet emerged in the US in the 70s, but it only became visible to the
public in the 90s.
• 1st January 1983 is considered the official birthday of Internet. Before this date,
the various computer networks did not have a standard way to communicate
with each other.
• Surprisingly, the Cold War was a big catalyst in the formation of the Internet.
• A big factor for the commercialization of the Internet was the introduction of
the personal computer in the 80s.
• In 2020, there were over 4.5 billion people to have access to the Internet.
3. A timeline of the evolution of the Internet

Statista (2021)
Changes in the number
of people accessing the
internet
There has been a huge increase
in the number of people
accessing the internet. Over 4
billion people were internet
users in 2020 per a study done
by Hootsuire, We are Social.
As we can see by the charts on
the side, nearly 60% of the
global population has access to
the internet.
Nearly 100% of the population in
Developed countries have
access to the internet and
nearly 40% in LDCs (Least
Developed Countries) per the
chart from Statista.
5. Internet speeds
• In the 2000’s, broadband products were introduced in the
market. The term broadband refers to any connection faster
than dial-up, such as ADSL and/or cable.
• ADSL and cable broadband would offer speeds up to 5mbps
download speed and 2 mbps speed.
• Nowadays, the ADSL and cable broadband is being replaced
in urban places by fiber-optic cables. Fiber broadband offers
speeds of up to 1gbps.
• We can conclude that in the past 20 years, the broadband
speed has increased massively by over 500%.
Lipfert, F. (2021)
The average WI-FI speed worldwide in 2021 was 58.9 Mbps per
a chart provided by Statista. The chart predicts that the
average WI-FI speed will increase nearly 40% globally until
2023.
Source: Statista (2021)
The average download speed for mobile users globally was
54Mbps in May 2021. The fixed broadband speed globally is
slightly higher at 105Mbps.

Digital devices
used by
audiences
• Users can access the internet
using several devices, including
laptops, smart phones, tablets,
smart watches, console games,
etc.
• The ability of accessing the
internet using portable devices
(such as smart phones, smart
watches) also enable the ability
to be “online” everywhere and
anywhere.
There was a big percentage of evolution
in the ownership of digital devices in the
UK in the space of 10 years (2008-2018).
In 2018, 78% of adults owned at least
one smartphone, 56% a Smart TV and
20% a wearable digital device.
With this chart, we can see how much
the digital devices have improved, and
how some digital devices owned by
several adults in 2008 are slowly
disappearing.

8. How customers
search for
information Feedvisor (2019)
Statista (2022)
The most common search engines are
Google, Yahoo, Microsoft Bing and Baidu.
Per the chart from Statista, Google is still the
leading search engine worldwide.
However, consumers are starting their search
journey for new products using another
search tool nowadays. Amazon has surpassed
Google as the ‘go to’ to search for new
products and when the consumer is ready to
purchase, as per a study done by Feedvisor.

9. Statista (2022)
Per the chart from Statista,
Google, Yelp, Facebook &
TripAdvisor are the most
common sites where consumers
search for reviews. Per the chart
from Statista, 81% have used
Google to evaluate local
businesses in 2021.
Social networks have also seen an
increase in the percentage of
users who use their “services” for
brand research.

Eurostat (2022)
Eurostat (2022)
Clothes is the most purchased good
online, mostly within the younger
generation.
Deliveries from restaurants, furniture
and cosmetics are also at the top of
the list.
Per the second chart on the side
from Eurostat, we can see the
youngest group (16-24) led in
spending less than €100 when doing
online purchases, and the people
aged 25-54 led when doing online
purchases worth between €500 and
€999.

streaming.
As of November 2019, Netflix had
over 151.6m subscribers, and Spotify
had 100m.
When this study was done, the video
streaming service Disney+ wasn’t
available yet. As of now, Disney+ is
also one of the leading video
streaming platforms.

12. Video
consumption

increasing year by year. YouTube
was the top video streaming app
on mobile devices with an average
of 23.2 hours spent a month per
user in 2020. ‘Song’ and ‘Songs’
were the top search queries on
YouTube.
Users spent more time a month
streaming videos using YouTube
than on social media such as
Facebook, WhatsApp and
Instagram.

13. Covid-19’s
impact on video
consumption

increase of video consumption.

where they confirmed 61% are
watching more videos on social
media apps, 56% are watching more
videos on streaming apps using a TV,
and 52% are watching more videos
on streaming apps using a

Koetsier, J. (2020)
Covid-19’s
impact on the
increase of time
spent on online
channels
There was a big increase in the % of
time spent on each online channel
during the pandemic. Social media
had the biggest increase at 48%. 25-
35 years old were the leading age
group with the biggest increase in
time spent using CTV devices.
15. Changes in
the
technology
In the recent years, we have been
introduced to voice assistant. Per a study
done by PWC Consumer Intelligence in
2018, 44% of the consumers used the
voice assistant to control another smart
device in their home. The leading device
was Television at 58%, and the lowest
one was Doorbell at 16%. A few
consumers have also purchased using
voice assistant in a smart device.
There has also been an increase in the
use of AI in consumer goods and retail
industry. As per the chart from Statista,
we can see that there was 48% in
Customer Care. This can benefit the
consumer in finding the right answer for
their issue using a chat bot, per example,
without needing to call up a Customer
Services line or send an email.

countries, this is more popular. China, India, Nigeria & USA were the top
leading countries who used a voice assistant to find information in the week
of the study.
Image recognition tools on a mobile are becoming a ‘go to’ to find several
products online. Colombia, Brazil ad Mexico were the top leading countries at
using image recognition tools each month.
17. Consumer trends
to remember for
2022
1. Consumers are not willing to
purchase from business that don’t
meet the expectations.
2. Consumers expect the customer
experience to improve.
3. Consumers are expecting to be
heard.
4. Consumers are expecting to be
treated as people, and not just data.

18. NordWood Themes (2017)
Consumers’ use
of technology
We can affirm that the use
of technology has
increased massively in the
past few years. Covid-19 has
had a big impact for this
change. The stay-at-home
orders all over the world
have made the population
find alternative ways to do
their shopping, or simply
be entertained. The digital
presence of a company is a
vital point nowadays, as the
technology expands.
