The Middle Colonies of New York and Pennsylvania and the Lower South colonies of South Carolina and Georgia are described. New York began as the Dutch colony of New Netherland but was taken over by the English in 1664. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn as a haven for Quakers. South Carolina's economy was based on rice cultivation which relied on slave labor as the population became majority black by the 1710s. The largest slave rebellion in the colonies prior to the American Revolution occurred in 1739 in South Carolina known as the Stono Rebellion. Georgia was founded in 1732 to act as a buffer between South Carolina and Spanish Florida but later legalized slavery and resembled South Carolina economically.
