The midbrain is located below the cerebral cortex and above the brain stem. It plays a crucial role in processing visual and auditory signals and controlling motor movements, especially of the eyes. The midbrain contains the tectum, tegmentum, and cerebral peduncles. The superior and inferior colliculi within the tectum process visual and auditory signals respectively before sending them to other parts of the brain. The tegmentum and cerebral peduncles are involved in many unconscious functions like homeostasis, reflexes, arousal, and coordination of movements.
