Michelangelo's David is a famous statue sculpted between 1501-1504 by Michelangelo. It was originally commissioned by the cathedral community in Florence as a symbol of republican pride and placed in the Piazza della Signoria. In 1873, the statue was moved indoors to the Galleria dell'Accademia for protection. David depicts the biblical hero before his famous battle with Goliath and emphasizes his cleverness over physical strength. Now over 500 years old, it remains one of Michelangelo's most famous works of Renaissance art.
