The Red Fort in Delhi was built in 1648 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as his capital. Constructed in red sandstone in the Mughal architectural style of domes, it is known as the Red Fort or Lal Kila. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. Each year on Independence Day, the Prime Minister addresses the nation from the Red Fort. It is one of Delhi's most important historical sites, located on the banks of the Yamuna River in Chandni Chowk.
