Mesopotamia is believed to be the cradle of civilization in the west. Its name literally means land between rivers as it is located
between the Tigrus and Euphrates rivers. Mesopotamia included Sumer and the Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian empires, all of
which are native to what is now Iraq.
The culture of Mesopotamia is an important part of history. Some believe that ethics, in the form of dialectic, dialogs, epic poetry,
folklore, hymns, lyrics, prose works, and proverbs are rooted in Mesopotamian philosophy. The earliest form of logic was developed by
the Babylonians, and though their society was one which men were more important than women, they were also centuries ahead of
their time in enlightenment; women could own property and even obtain a divorce in some situations.
Mesopotamian art was some of the most sophisticated and elaborate, rivaling that of Ancient Egypt. The main emphasis was on
various, fortunately very durable, forms of sculpture in stone and clay; little painting has survived, but what has suggests that painting
was mainly used for geometrical and plant-based decorative schemes, though most sculpture was also painted.
Ancient Mesopotamian pottery started around 6,000 years ago. Ancient Mesopotamian pottery was hand made using a variety of
different methods including coil building, slab building and pinch pottery. This was a popular job in the Mesopotamian civilization
even though it wasn't high up in the social classes.
