- Clay tokens were small clay objects used for accounting purposes for around 4,000 years starting around 8,000 BCE. They evolved from plain shapes to ones with markings and meanings. - As societies transitioned to agriculture and cities formed between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers around 4000 BCE, tokens were used to record quantities of goods like grain, sheep, and gold being stored and distributed. - Around 3200 BCE, as tokens were impressed onto clay tablets, this led to the development of the first actual writing system in Mesopotamia to record accounting information. Writing was then only used for accounting until 2700 BCE.
