The Ancient Sumer region was one of the most prosperous areas in the world due to its rich soil and rivers. The Sumerians established some of the first schools which taught mostly boys skills like writing to become scribes. Sumerian cities grew as farming increased and food surpluses developed, though each city operated independently under its own gods. Sumerian civilization peaked around 2000 BCE but then declined as constant warfare drained resources, allowing the rival state of Babylonia to conquer the region.
