2. History of the Luau
• Luaus are traditional Hawaiian celebrations
▫ Originally called ‘aha ‘aina, these celebrations
became known as luaus about 150 years ago
• The term luau originates from the Hawaiian and
other Hawaiian languages, and is the name for
the taro leaf
▫ Taro leaves are combined with others foods, such
as chicken or fish, and then baked in coconut milk
3. The Modern Luau
• King Kamehameha II introduced the modern
luau in 1819
• Luaus were celebrated when a child became of
age, when a new canoe was launched, or when
warriors returned home after long journeys
• Today, luaus celebrate events such as weddings,
graduation, and first birthdays
4. Celebrating a Luau
• Traditional luau feasts were eaten on the ground
and without utensils
• Mats were rolled out and held beautiful
centerpieces made of leaves, ferns, and flowers
• Foods were cooked in an underground oven
5. Luau Delicacies
• Roasted pulled pork cooked in an imu
• Poi: Mashed taro root
• Laulau: Taro leaf tips and fish or chicken
wrapped in ti leaves
• Lomi salmon: A salted fish marinated in lemon
juice, tomatoes, and onions
• Plantain bananas, yams, fresh fruits
