  2. 2. Foods/drinks. <ul><li>The traditional drink of Fiji is kava (yagona). </li></ul><ul><li>Roti is the very popular food in Fiji. It is made by Indians. </li></ul><ul><li>Fijian food has a wonderful mix of the spicy curries that are influenced by the Indian people. </li></ul><ul><li>It is a feast for the whole family of traditional Fijian food which is cooked in the ground (Lovo). </li></ul><ul><li>Fiji has its own brand of beers (Fiji bitter) this brand is cheap! But (Fiji gold) is expensive but it tastes nice. </li></ul>

ART. <ul><li>The art of Fiji has been overshadowed in the eyes of Melanesian. </li></ul><ul><li>Art and Craft of Fiji is various and really some good pieces are crafted out. </li></ul><ul><li>some arts are used locally or as presentations in the Fijian ceremonies. </li></ul><ul><li>The Fiji Art is generally a craft-ware of either wood or it is in the weave form as mostly the Pacific Island. </li></ul><ul><li>The Visitors can get an insight of the awesome art work of Fiji by visiting the Art gallery in Savusavu. Its located in the Copra shed of Vanua Levu town. </li></ul>

Dance. <ul><li>The cultural dance of Fiji is called (meke). </li></ul><ul><li>Meke is the Fijian expression for a traditional dance. </li></ul><ul><li>Men, women and children all participate in the meke, which is a combination of dance and repetitive rhythmic chanting telling the stories of everyday life, or of ancient gods or of battles won. </li></ul><ul><li>Well-known meke types are fan dances performed by women, and spear or club dances performed by men. </li></ul><ul><li>Mekes are held at important events such as to entertain visiting dignitaries, or the opening of a building, etc. </li></ul>

Music <ul><li>The music of Fiji represents the indigenous tradition. </li></ul><ul><li>It includes India, China, Europe and other Pacific islands music's. </li></ul><ul><li>Fijian music styles and structures include and combine Polynesian and Melanesian music with the variation style between one area and another. </li></ul><ul><li>Fijians play both indigenous instruments as well as the guitar, ukulele and mandolin. </li></ul><ul><li>Several kinds of l ali drums are the main indigenous instruments. They were formerly a means of communication, announcing events of social significance. </li></ul>

History <ul><li>What is clear, however, is that Fiji was settled by two distinct races, today known as the Melanesian and Polynesian races. </li></ul><ul><li>The exact origins of the first inhabitants of the islands of Fiji remain a mystery. </li></ul><ul><li>since the Fijians had no written language and relied on memory for their history. </li></ul><ul><li>It is most commonly accepted that the first settlers arrived around 1500 B.C. </li></ul><ul><li>The first of these discoveries was made in 1643 by the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman and English navigators, including Captain James Cook who sailed through in 1774, and made further explorations in the 18th century. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Facts. <ul><li>The Commonwealth countries expelled Fiji from the Commonwealth, due to the first coup in 1987. Military coup leader Major General Sitiveni Rabuka formally declared Fiji a republic on October 6, 1987. </li></ul><ul><li>Fiji is a multi-cultural and multi-racial country. </li></ul><ul><li>The official language is English with Fijian and Hindi being used widely. Fijian dialects differ between regions. </li></ul><ul><li>Religion plays an important part in Fiji where the main religions are Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. </li></ul><ul><li>The nation’s population as at 2002 was about 826,281. </li></ul>

Tourism. <ul><li>Fiji is one of the cheapest destinations in the South Pacific. </li></ul><ul><li>Tourism has become big business very big business. </li></ul><ul><li>Tourism is the largest business in the world today with annual receipts for both domestic and international tourism exceeding US$2 trillion. </li></ul><ul><li>Fiji has been the leader in tourism among South Pacific countries for the last several decades. </li></ul><ul><li>Tourism has been Fiji's fastest-growing industry and recently replaced sugar as the leading foreign exchange earner. </li></ul>
