Every Rotarian is an ambassador of Rotary's values and mission. However, the Rotary clubs must continue strengthen Rotary's public image as world's largest voluntary service organisation committed to peace and better understanding in the world through humanitarian service projects. This requires telling your story and sharing it with the community and other stakeholders on regular basis using various communication tools, like website, club bulletin, etc. At the same time the story must be shared with the media, to win better understanding as well as engage them to reach out to the needy. Curious about attending a Taking Heart Ramadan Iftar? Do you wonder what will happen if you attend one? See an overview of the experience in this presentation.
Ramadan is the month of the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset; this year it falls between the dates of June 18 - July 17. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the “five pillars” of Islam, and is performed to learn compassion, self-restraint, and generosity.
As our Muslim neighbors prepare for this sacred month, the Minnesota Council of Churches is excited to announce a series of open houses at area mosques. Mosques and Islamic Community Centers once again will be welcoming their non-Muslim neighbors for a traditional Ramadan Iftar meal, the meal that breaks the fast. Known as Taking Heart, this long-running program is organized by the Council and the Muslim American Society of Minnesota (MAS); it brings Christians and members of other faith communities together with Muslims for food and conversation. Last year nearly 600 non-Muslims attended the Open House Iftar dinners.
