During this lesson, learners will be able to…understand the use of first
conditional sentences, provide examples about it related to holidays and to
revise (and assess) the three lessons they developed with the trainee teacher
(me).

Materials
-Worksheet to cut the two parts to join and make a sentence (one per student)
-Worksheet with crossword (one per student)
-Questionnaire worksheet to answer anonymously.
-A present for each student and for the teacher.
Procedures
(5 minutes)
I would greet students and say:
-Hello everyone. How are you doing today?
I would wait for answers and then say:
-I am glad. Well, as you know, this is our last lesson together and I would like to enjoy a lot the last
minutes we have to spend together.
I would now ask:
-Do you remember what we did last week? What did we study? Here is a clue: “I will spend my
holiday with my family”
I would wait for answers and then say:
-Excellent. We studied future tenses: will and going to. And, do you remember what the topic was?
We played a short game to guess the topic last week.
Again, I would wait for possible answers and say:
-Very good, we talked about holidays. And we made a lot of predictions with will and going to about
next holiday.
-Alright. Now, today we are going to keep talking about holidays, but in a different way. Look at the
whiteboard.
(15 minutes)
I would write an example: “If the weather is hot, I will swim in my swimming pool”
-What can you see here? We can spot the prediction: “I will swim in my swimming pool”
I would highlight / underline that part of the sentence. Then, I would say…
-But, what happens with the first part? “If the weather is hot”. Do you know the meaning of “if”?
I would wait for their answers, and then say (using gestures as to promote better understanding):
-We use if to make a condition. That is, “I will swim in my swimming pool” but just “if the weather is
hot”. Because, if the weather is cold I won’t swim in my swimming pool. Do you understand?
I would wait for their answers and then write another example on the whiteboard:
-Look at this example.
I would write: “If I get a gift on Christmas Eve…” and then continue it with “…I will be very happy”.
-This means that I will be happy if I get a gift. If I don’t get a gift, I will be sad. (using gestures)
Then, I would say:
-Do you understand?
I would wait for answers, and if they say they get the meaning, I would write on the whiteboard:
“If I visit Disneyland…” and say:
-Who wants to complete this example? If I visit Disneyland, I will… Come on, I want a volunteer.
I would wait for their answers and complete with different examples they provide and then add
some more, for example: “…I will walk a lot/ I will take a lot of photos/ I will meet Minnie and Mickey”
Then, I would proceed to the first activity:
-Very good. Now, I want you to look at the first activity: what can you see?
Activity 1: Cut and paste, put the sentences in order.
Materials: Worksheet.
Timing: 25 minutes
-Here are two different tables. One of them has a first part of a sentence, and the other one has the
other part of a sentence. But, look carefully! They are mixed. That is why you can see the first table
with a letter on each gap and on the other table a number on each sentence.
-So, you have to cut the first table (A-L) and decide which sentence completes the prediction (1-12).
Here is an example:
-For example, for the sentence A which says “If the days are sunny,” I will look at the second table
below and decide which completes the sentence. In this case, it is the number 4 “I will go to the
beach”. So, I paste the number 4 on the sentence A. And it will end up like this:
I would write the example on the whiteboard: “If the days are sunny, I will go to the beach”.
-If the days are sunny, I will go to the beach. Do you understand? Do you have any doubt?
I would wait for possible doubts and answer them. Then I would say:
-OK. So, start! I will be there for you.
I would now monitor students’ work and help them when necessary. I would also pay attention to
correct the mistakes (if any).
After 15 minutes I would say:
-Alright! So, let’s revise this. I want volunteers. What is the complete sentence for letter B?
I would wait for answers and revise other 5 examples. I would write them on the whiteboard and
then praise students.
Transition -You did amazing! You did it! Now, I want you to tell me, do you like crosswords?
Activity 2: Holiday Crossword
Materials: Crossword worksheet
Timing: 30 minutes
Scaffolding instances marked with blue
I would hand in the crosswords and say:
-As you can see, here you have a crossword and below there are 11 clues to find out the words.
You have to complete the crossword. You can do it individually or in pairs. For example, look at the
number 11.
I would provide the example:
-The clue says: “the day on which it’s the end of the year and begins the next one”. So, it is New
Year. Then, I will write on the crossword: NEWYEAR. Do you understand?
I would wait for answers, and then say:
-OK. Before you start working on this, after you finished the crossword, you will choose 5 words and
make a sentence with first conditional. Take this example:
I would write New Year on the whiteboard and put below:
“If I spend New Year’s Eve alone, I will be bored”
-So, here you are. If I spend New Year’s Eve alone, I will be bored. Or sad. Yes? Do you
understand what you have to do? Remember, they have to be 5 sentences like that. Come on, start
working.
I would now monitor students’ work and help them with more clues if necessary. I would also make
sure they get to do the 5 sentences for the words they selected.
After 15 minutes, I would say:
-Alright. Now, I want 5 examples of the sentences you wrote. Who wants to be the first?
I would wait for their contributions and praise their participation. They I would say:
Transition -Very good, kids. Now, I want you to put everything away and wait for the permission to
go to your short break.
Activity 3: Assessment
Materials: Questionnaire worksheet
Timing: 20 minutes
Scaffolding instances highlighted with blue
-Please, everybody, listen to me. As you know, this is our last lesson together. That is why I will give
you a worksheet which will be anonymous. That means that you don’t have to put your name on the
sheet if you don’t want to. Do you understand?
Then, I would say:
-You will see two different parts: one for your work and one for my job as a teacher. You will find
questions and different options: Agree, Disagree and Partially agree. You will read the questions
and select the most proper answer for you on each question. Then, you will see a space for writing
whatever you want to write (if you want). It can be a comment about me, or a comment about the
lessons, about what you liked or disliked about the lessons, OK?
I would wait for possible questions and then say:
-Please, start. When you finish, just stand up, leave the questionnaire here (pointing to the table)
and I won’t read your questionnaires, I promise. I will read them later when I leave. Then, go back to
your seats and wait.

UPDATE:
Note: The gifts include a small drawing that children can paint if there are 5 minutes left, but
that is not likely to happen as they tend to work slowly but very well.

Language Focus LEXIS FUNCTIONS STRUCTURE R E V -Vocabulary about holidays (activities, items, making plans) -Future and present tense. -To refer about holidays. -To make predictions and plans. -I will go to the beach on holiday. -I like sunbathing myself at the beach. N E W -Revising vocabulary related to holidays. -Introducing first conditional use. -To talk about holidays. -To make predictions about holidays and to understand the combination between present and future. -If the weather is hot, I will go to the beach. -I will sunbathe myself on holiday if the weather is hot.
  • 2. Materials -Worksheet to cut the two parts to join and make a sentence (one per student) -Worksheet with crossword (one per student) -Questionnaire worksheet to answer anonymously. -A present for each student and for the teacher. Procedures (5 minutes) I would greet students and say: -Hello everyone. How are you doing today? I would wait for answers and then say: -I am glad. Well, as you know, this is our last lesson together and I would like to enjoy a lot the last minutes we have to spend together. I would now ask: -Do you remember what we did last week? What did we study? Here is a clue: “I will spend my holiday with my family” I would wait for answers and then say: -Excellent. We studied future tenses: will and going to. And, do you remember what the topic was? We played a short game to guess the topic last week. Again, I would wait for possible answers and say: -Very good, we talked about holidays. And we made a lot of predictions with will and going to about next holiday. -Alright. Now, today we are going to keep talking about holidays, but in a different way. Look at the whiteboard. (15 minutes) I would write an example: “If the weather is hot, I will swim in my swimming pool” -What can you see here? We can spot the prediction: “I will swim in my swimming pool” I would highlight / underline that part of the sentence. Then, I would say… -But, what happens with the first part? “If the weather is hot”. Do you know the meaning of “if”? I would wait for their answers, and then say (using gestures as to promote better understanding): -We use if to make a condition. That is, “I will swim in my swimming pool” but just “if the weather is hot”. Because, if the weather is cold I won’t swim in my swimming pool. Do you understand? I would wait for their answers and then write another example on the whiteboard:
  • 3. -Look at this example. I would write: “If I get a gift on Christmas Eve…” and then continue it with “…I will be very happy”. -This means that I will be happy if I get a gift. If I don’t get a gift, I will be sad. (using gestures) Then, I would say: -Do you understand? I would wait for answers, and if they say they get the meaning, I would write on the whiteboard: “If I visit Disneyland…” and say: -Who wants to complete this example? If I visit Disneyland, I will… Come on, I want a volunteer. I would wait for their answers and complete with different examples they provide and then add some more, for example: “…I will walk a lot/ I will take a lot of photos/ I will meet Minnie and Mickey” Then, I would proceed to the first activity: -Very good. Now, I want you to look at the first activity: what can you see? Activity 1: Cut and paste, put the sentences in order. Materials: Worksheet. Timing: 25 minutes -Here are two different tables. One of them has a first part of a sentence, and the other one has the other part of a sentence. But, look carefully! They are mixed. That is why you can see the first table with a letter on each gap and on the other table a number on each sentence. -So, you have to cut the first table (A-L) and decide which sentence completes the prediction (1-12). Here is an example:
  • 4. -For example, for the sentence A which says “If the days are sunny,” I will look at the second table below and decide which completes the sentence. In this case, it is the number 4 “I will go to the beach”. So, I paste the number 4 on the sentence A. And it will end up like this: I would write the example on the whiteboard: “If the days are sunny, I will go to the beach”. -If the days are sunny, I will go to the beach. Do you understand? Do you have any doubt? I would wait for possible doubts and answer them. Then I would say: -OK. So, start! I will be there for you. I would now monitor students’ work and help them when necessary. I would also pay attention to correct the mistakes (if any). After 15 minutes I would say: -Alright! So, let’s revise this. I want volunteers. What is the complete sentence for letter B? I would wait for answers and revise other 5 examples. I would write them on the whiteboard and then praise students. Transition -You did amazing! You did it! Now, I want you to tell me, do you like crosswords? Activity 2: Holiday Crossword
  • 5. Materials: Crossword worksheet Timing: 30 minutes Scaffolding instances marked with blue I would hand in the crosswords and say: -As you can see, here you have a crossword and below there are 11 clues to find out the words. You have to complete the crossword. You can do it individually or in pairs. For example, look at the number 11. I would provide the example: -The clue says: “the day on which it’s the end of the year and begins the next one”. So, it is New Year. Then, I will write on the crossword: NEWYEAR. Do you understand? I would wait for answers, and then say: -OK. Before you start working on this, after you finished the crossword, you will choose 5 words and make a sentence with first conditional. Take this example: I would write New Year on the whiteboard and put below:
  • 6. “If I spend New Year’s Eve alone, I will be bored” -So, here you are. If I spend New Year’s Eve alone, I will be bored. Or sad. Yes? Do you understand what you have to do? Remember, they have to be 5 sentences like that. Come on, start working. I would now monitor students’ work and help them with more clues if necessary. I would also make sure they get to do the 5 sentences for the words they selected. After 15 minutes, I would say: -Alright. Now, I want 5 examples of the sentences you wrote. Who wants to be the first? I would wait for their contributions and praise their participation. They I would say: Transition -Very good, kids. Now, I want you to put everything away and wait for the permission to go to your short break. Activity 3: Assessment Materials: Questionnaire worksheet Timing: 20 minutes Scaffolding instances highlighted with blue -Please, everybody, listen to me. As you know, this is our last lesson together. That is why I will give you a worksheet which will be anonymous. That means that you don’t have to put your name on the sheet if you don’t want to. Do you understand? Then, I would say: -You will see two different parts: one for your work and one for my job as a teacher. You will find questions and different options: Agree, Disagree and Partially agree. You will read the questions and select the most proper answer for you on each question. Then, you will see a space for writing whatever you want to write (if you want). It can be a comment about me, or a comment about the lessons, about what you liked or disliked about the lessons, OK? I would wait for possible questions and then say: -Please, start. When you finish, just stand up, leave the questionnaire here (pointing to the table) and I won’t read your questionnaires, I promise.
