What is a laser?
Laser =
•Light
•Amplification
•Stimulated Emission
•Radiation
Characteristics of laser
Comparing to the conventional light, a laser is differentiated
by three characteristics. They are:
• Directionality
• pure color
• temporal coherence.
The directionality of laser beam offers a great advantage over
ordinary lights since it can be concentrate its energy onto a
very small spot area.
Laser Application
• In industry
• to drill tiny holes in hard
materials
• for welding and machining
• for lining up equipment
precisely, especially in
inaccessible places
Laser Application
• In everyday life
• to be used as bar-code
readers
• to be used in compact disc
players,
• to produce short pulses of
light used in digital
communications,
• to produce holograms.
Laser Application
• HOLOGRAPHY
• Holography is the production of
holograms by the use of laser.
• A hologram is a 3D image
recorded in a special photographic
plate.
• The image appears to float in
space and to move when the
viewer moves.
RESEARCH
• Used to measure the speed of light in a
laboratory.
• Can measure the distance
• Used in detection and some of correction
• Used as transmitter in telecommunication

Mechanisms of laser interaction with human tissues
• There are three famous Mechanisms
• Photocoagulation
• Photo-vaporization
• Photochemical ablation
• There are there type of laser are used in medical application.
• Power LASER
• Mild LASER
• Soft LASER
What is a coagulation?
• A slow heating of muscle and other tissues is like a cooking of meat in everyday life.
• The heating induced the destabilization of the proteins, enzymes.
• This is also called
• coagulation.
• A Laser heating of tissues above 50 oC but below 100oC induces disordering of
proteins and other bio-molecules, this process is called photocoagulation.
What is a Photo-
vaporization?
• With very high-power densities, instead
of cooking, lasers will quickly heat the
tissues to above 100o C , water within the
tissues boils and evaporates. Since 70% of
the body tissue is water, the boiling
change the tissue into a gas. This
phenomenon is called photo-
vaporization.
• Photo- vaporization results in
complete removal of the tissue
What is Photochemical ablation?
• When using high power lasers of ultraviolet wavelength,
some chemical bonds can be broken without causing local
heating; this process is called photo-chemical ablation.
• The photo-chemical ablation results in clean-cut incision.
The thermal component is relatively small and the zone of
thermal interaction is limited in the incision wall.
TYPES OF MEDICAL
LASERS
Power LASER
• Has a strong emission
• Only used in surgery; used to cut, coagulate and
evaporate tissues
• They can replace the scalpel of the surgeon
• This are “Hot laser”, it deliver power up to
thousands of watts, for removal of unhealthy tissue
without damaging the healthy tissue that
surrounds it.
TYPES OF MEDICAL
LASERS
• Mild LASER
• medium emission
• is used for treatment of deeper tissues
• Soft LASER
• weak emission
• acts only at the surface (dermatology)
The medical application of laser
• Laser Angioplasty
Laser emitting catheter (a thin flexible tube) is inserted into an artery, then
guided to the location of the blockage. Once there, the laser is turned on,
and pulsating beams of light are directed towards the plaque. The plaque
vaporizes into gaseous particles, layer by layer, thus reducing the block in the
artery. This technique is not used as frequently by the doctors as other
angioplasty procedures

complications/77/article#what

The medical application of laser
• Lasers in dentistry
Dentists use lasers in a variety of procedures involving the inside of the
mouth, be it to remove overgrown tissue, to reshape the gums, or to
whiten teeth. Sometimes, laser dentistry is ideal for children who
become anxious or afraid when having dental work done.

The medical application of laser
Lasers in dermatology
• Modern dermatology may have at the disposal of a wide range of laser
equipment, often very similar to each other, which can treat, many
cutaneous diseases with absolute efficacy and safety
• Especially the carbon dioxide laser (CO2 laser). Due to its specific
wavelength (10600 nm) and to its variable nature and duration of output
(continuous, pulsed), CO2 laser may be useful for the treatment of different
skin or mucosal diseases
• More application , laser hair removal, tattoo removal
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5535675/
Lasers in dermatology
There are wide
range of medical
application
Example
• cancer diagnosis laser
• cancer treatment
• Dermatology to treat melanoma
• Frenectomy
• laser mammography
• medical imaging
• Microscopy
• Lithotripsy
• Prostatectomy
