2. Story:
A student had a magical time when she snaffled the snitch in her first muggle Quidditch game. Rowena
Francis, who lives in Purley, was one of several Oxford students who took part in the Harry Potter-based
sport. The university has started inter-college games of Quidditch which has been adapted from the novels
in which witches and wizards fly around on broomsticks. Instead, participants have a broomstick between
their legs and use volleyballs to try and score goals. Miss Francis, 19, said ‘It was not as hard as I thought it
was going to be, but it was though and there were a lot of one hand throwing and catching – and a lot of
dropping the ball.” The Philosophy and German student found out about the game after seeing an advert in
her college newspaper. She said “I saw the advert and decided to go along because I wanted to try
something new just having started my first year. I am not obsessive, but they are my favourite books. In
knew the rules but they were really complicated and I was not sure if I would be able to play.” The game was
organised by Angus Berry, founder of the first college team at Oxford. He is hoping the sport will grow and
eventually become big enough for a varsity game against Cambridge.
Media values: Proximity because it is in a place close to where the paper was
published, currency because it is something happening recently and also links to things that
could happen in the future, human interest because it is about people and odd/unusual because
it is not something you would hear about every day.

4. Story 1:
I would include a story about a British teacher who was killed in a coach
accident on the way back from a skiing trip in Chalons-en-Champagne in
France. This story would be relevant because it is to do with school children
(as several were also hurt) and it is Human Interest but also very
shocking, so it interests young people. I would make it relevant by using
statistics about how many people were injured and killed in the accident, and
also quotes from relevant people.

5. Story 2:
Another story I would include would be a story about a Swedish man who
managed to survive for two months trapped in a snow covered car with no food.
I would include this story because it is very unusual and is also a Human
Interest story. I would make this relevant by giving details about his time in
there and also quotes from the Doctors about how he is recovering and how he
survived.

6. Story 3:
The third story I would include is one about a man who broke into Buckingham
Palace, and was given whisky by the staff who worked there. I would include
this story because it is controversial and interesting as well as humorous but
would use more simple language than the original story, so that it is easier for
younger people to understand and appeals to them more.

7. Story 4:
The fourth story I will include is about a new law banning parents from taking
children out of school during term time to save money on holidays. I will include
this because as well as being current and interesting, it is relevant to the people
who would be reading the news because it means that they would not be able
to miss school because of holidays, and they would be affected directly by this
new law. I would make it relevant by showing different opinions from different
people about the new law and including quotes.

8. Story 5:
The last story I would include is about a new Government plan to store and
record phone conversations, emails and text messages sent as a way to stop
terrorism. This would be interesting to the audience of my newspaper
because it is a controversial thing which could question people’s privacy, and
could also affect teenagers a lot as they use emails and text messages on a
daily basis to communicate with their friends. I would make it appealing by
using different points of view and opinions as well as what would actually be
recorded and how it would affect different people.
