The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Media crime justification
1. Charlie Quirk
Justification of our chosen genre
For our upcoming A2 Media project I will be working alongside Brandon Hanlon and we will be
creating a trailer for our chosen genre. We have chosen to do a Crime trailer as we believe this will
give us the best chance of achieving the best marks.
The first reason for choosing Crime as the genre for our trailer is because we feel that Crime films
are less common in comparison to Horror films or Action films. This is supported by the fact that
there were only 9 Crime films during 2014 where as in 2014 there were 29 Action films. Therefore
we wanted to try and create a new and original crime film which will stand out due to its originality.
The second reason as to why we wanted to use Crime as the main genre for our trailer is because
there a range of different sub-genres which we can also use. This helps us bring in several different
conventions that may come from the variety of sub-genres there are for Crime films. In addition to
this, it also allows us to be more general when it comes down to deciding what conventions we
want to use in the trailer. If we were to use Crime as the one specific genre of our film without a
sub-genre, we would not be able to bring in more conventions into the trailer to make it more
interesting.
Furthermore, another reason for choosing Crime as the genre of our upcoming trailer is because we
felt that we could reveal certain things about the film through the trailer. For example we had the
idea to show certain objects such as a knife which would be significant to film, this would therefore
allow the audience to get an idea of what the full film plot would be about, the use of editing in the
trailer as well would also play an impact on the audience as we came up with the idea that we could
use particular sounds which would foreshadow a event that would happen in the film. For example
we could insert a scream into the trailer which could indicate to the audience that someone in the
film is in danger. Furthermore we could use a particular object which could also foreshadow a
future event or a colour such as red to indicate that danger is close.
Overall me and Brandon both agree that Crime was the best genre for our upcoming trailer. We felt
that we could incorporate a range of conventions into the trailer which will make it seem more
interesting and will want to make the audience watch the full film. By using our previous
experience of creating the opening 2 minutes of an action film we realise that its important to
consider each aspect of the film and its also important to have a general idea of how the trailer will
play out by researching a range of different Crime films. From what I have researched I have
discovered that Crime films tend to use a main character which had a difficult childhood, therefore
by knowing this we are able to decipher what the backstories will be for some of the characters in
the trailer and the full film.
