2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. A little bit about our film idea...
Our film is going to be a teen horror, starring 2 teenage, female
vloggers. They are going out on a camping adventure into a wood
which in their local town has the reputation of being haunted. The
two girls will go in with positive thoughts and believe that nothing
will happen, however one of the girls (Katie) is slightly anxious.
Paranormal events will begin to happen and then everything will
spiral out of control as the girls fight for survival.
3. Key Characters...
Daisy: A white teenage girl who is brave,
outgoing, middle classed and ambitious. We
picked her name because it has innocent and
sweet connotations, and in the film her
personality contradicts these connotations.
This represents the unexpected theme that
runs throughout the film, where the audience
doesn’t know what will happen next.
She will be wearing casual clothing since she is
out camping - her clothes will get ruined -
ripped and torn - throughout the film.
Katie: A white teenage girl who is jealous of Daisy.
She is timid and significanty less confident. Katie
will be hidden in Daisy’s shadow throughout the
film but her confidence will gradually grow and
she’ll go outside of her comfort zone.
She will be wearing casual clothing since she is out
camping - her clothes will get ruined - ripped and
torn - throughout the film.
4. Teaser Trailer...
Our teaser trailer will be similar to other horror trailers,
especially “the Blair Witch Project - The Woods”. It will start
off positively and the characters will be very naive. Then the
atmosphere flips and a montage of dramatic events take
place. The lighting will be dark (low key) throughout,
however some of the shots will have a green filter on to
make them appear like it’s been filmed in pitch black. The
editing will be very fast paced (however, it will start slow).
Paranormal events will be happening, and something will
appear to be chasing and torturing the girls psychologically
and physically, however, the audience never sees what is
causing all the damage. The fact that they never see who it is
or what it is, will leave them on edge and eager to find out
more/eager to watch the film when it’s released. The trailer
will be filmed first hand, by the characters and to make this
obvious we will put a video camera filter over the shots. In
addition, we will put in TV glitch edits throughout the trailer
(this is inspired from Paranormal activity 3).
5. Poster...
● Our poster is going to be a picture of the woods.
● The lighting will be low key.
● There will be a dark shadowed figure shown in the background, appearing from behind a
tree.
● Everything will be very minimal.
● There won’t be too much text.
6. Magazine Cover...
Our magazine cover will feature the two main characters sitting in their tent in the woods
looking scared, hurt and bloody. The lighting will be high key on the characters and everything
else will be very dark.
Empire and scream would be great examples.
7. Target Audience Profile...
Our target audience is teeenagers and young adults. Based around the ages of 16 and
over. Statistics show that 71% of 15-24 males watch horror films, so we have expanded
the stereotypical target audience by having our two main characters as females: this will
attract the female gender. Therefore the genders we are aiming for is both male and
female. Our demographic group would be Middle class.
Seeing as our characters are british, we would hope the elements of the film itself will
reach a wider target audience. Eg the use whole film is based on youtubers and
americans use youtube more frequently
These elements are towards both females and males.
When looking at what our target audience listen to. We try to look at the typical
everyday artist that most listen to e.g Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Drake,
Rihanna, Bruno mars, Kendrick lamar, DJ khaled, Future, Sia , katy perry and many
more.
Next we are looking at what they watch: The walking dead, Power, Orange is the new
black, Riverdale, American horror story, Game of thrones etc.
Lifestyle - focused on social media. youtuber fanatics
8. Promotional Campaign...
What aspects of the film are you going to emphasise
in the marketing products - e.g. Genre? Narrative
themes? Character representation?
We will brand our film by using a range of dark colours that convey danger, fear and blood. For blue, red and
black. It will feature the 2 main characters in a tent scared. Our villain will be a hidden figure.
The thing will make our film stand out from other teen horror films will be the use of 2 females as our main
characters as it is rare to see females as the lead roles in females as woman are usallay sexulizsed. The use of
how everyday technology and social media eg Our characters are youtubers and vlog their moments. It will
bring the audience to be able to relate as a lot of teenagers watch youtubers vlogs. The genre of horror itself
The parts of the film that
we are trying to
emphasise is the
character representation
As well as the genre horror:
Desired effect
Just plain suspense
