TUTORIAL SHEET 6 BELT DRIVE
1. An open belt drive connects 2 pulleys of diameter 60cm and 30 cm by a flat belt. The
distance between centers of two pulleys is 2.10m. The coefficient of frictions is 0.28 and
0.22 between both pulleys and the belt. If the maximum allowable tension in the belt is
10KN. determine the tension in the belt and the largest couple that can be transmitted.

2. An open belt drive connects two pulleys 90cm and 60cm diameter mounted on two
parallel shafts 3m apart. The maximum belt tension is 2000N. The coefficient of friction
is 0.3. The driving pulley of diameter 90m runs at 3000rpm. Find the power transmitted,
torque acting on each shaft and initial tension in the drive.

3. The diameters of driving pulley and the driven pulley are 1800mm and 600mm
respectively. The distance between the two pulleys is 12m. determine the length of belt
required to drive the pulley if it is:
I. Open belt
II. Crossed belt

4. Two parallel shafts whose centre lines are 4.8m apart are connected by an open belt drive.
The diameter of larger pulley is 1.5m and that of smaller pulley is 1m. The initial tension in
the belt is 3KN when stationary. The coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is
0.3. If the smaller pulley rotates at 400rpm, determine the power transmitted.

5. In an open belt drive the sum of the diameters of two pulleys is 60cm. they are running at
1500 rpm and 3000rpm. Determine the diameter of each pulley assuming the total slip of the
system is 5%. The pulley running at 1500rpm is the driver pulley.

6. Two pulleys of diameter 0.6m and 0.3m connected by cross belt drive are 3.5m apart.
Power transmitted is 5KW. The permissible load on belt is 2.5N/mm width of belt, larger
pulley makes 220rpm, thickness of belt is 5mm, and the coefficient of friction between belt
and pulley is 0.35. Determine:
I. Length of belt
II. Width of belt
III. Initial tension in belt

  • 1. SKIT, JAIPUR. SUBJECT : ENGINEERING MECHANICS DATE OF SUBMISSION:10 APR 2015 SESSION 2014- 15 TUTORIAL SHEET 6 BELT DRIVE 1. An open belt drive connects 2 pulleys of diameter 60cm and 30 cm by a flat belt. The distance between centers of two pulleys is 2.10m. The coefficient of frictions is 0.28 and 0.22 between both pulleys and the belt. If the maximum allowable tension in the belt is 10KN. determine the tension in the belt and the largest couple that can be transmitted. (2008) 2. An open belt drive connects two pulleys 90cm and 60cm diameter mounted on two parallel shafts 3m apart. The maximum belt tension is 2000N. The coefficient of friction is 0.3. The driving pulley of diameter 90m runs at 3000rpm. Find the power transmitted, torque acting on each shaft and initial tension in the drive. (2010) 3. The diameters of driving pulley and the driven pulley are 1800mm and 600mm respectively. The distance between the two pulleys is 12m. determine the length of belt required to drive the pulley if it is: I. Open belt II. Crossed belt (2012) 4. Two parallel shafts whose centre lines are 4.8m apart are connected by an open belt drive. The diameter of larger pulley is 1.5m and that of smaller pulley is 1m. The initial tension in the belt is 3KN when stationary. The coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.3. If the smaller pulley rotates at 400rpm, determine the power transmitted. (2011) 5. In an open belt drive the sum of the diameters of two pulleys is 60cm. they are running at 1500 rpm and 3000rpm. Determine the diameter of each pulley assuming the total slip of the system is 5%. The pulley running at 1500rpm is the driver pulley. (2013) 6. Two pulleys of diameter 0.6m and 0.3m connected by cross belt drive are 3.5m apart. Power transmitted is 5KW. The permissible load on belt is 2.5N/mm width of belt, larger pulley makes 220rpm, thickness of belt is 5mm, and the coefficient of friction between belt and pulley is 0.35. Determine: I. Length of belt II. Width of belt III. Initial tension in belt (2014)
