Matthew Arnold was a Victorian writer who felt isolated by the industrial age and expressed a pessimistic outlook on life. His most famous work is Culture and Anarchy, which used terms like "sweetness and light", "Hellenism", and "Hebraism" to philosophize about culture and the classes in Victorian England.

Rolland was a lifelong pacifist who protested World War 1 and corresponded with other influential figures like Gandhi and Freud. Cesar Vallejo was a Peruvian poet considered one of the great innovators of 20th century poetry.
