Inequality in Latin America Essay
Although Latin America has faced many social, political, and economic issues within the last three
centuries, inequality remains one of the most important, historical, and omnipresent aspects of the
region s culture. As Europeans took over Latin America during the time of colonization, they
implemented many elitist social structures that have held strong and are evident today (Harris).
Income inequality is the most visible and greatest disparity that the region faces; yet inequality
between gender, ethnicities, and education remain strong and significant problems with a necessity for
improvement. Inequality of wealth and disparity of power and influence are Latin American s greatest
curses and are at the root of many of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only few Europeans came over to colonize, but their human capital, technology, wealth, and legal and
economic institutions made it effortless to take control. Spain emerged as the leader in colonizing the
New World and implemented encomiendas, aiding certain elites and giving little to the rest of the
population. The Catholic Church, fueling Spain and Portugal s exclusive ownership of land, led to
social mobility and acquisition of titles. Led by elites, the Church had favorable settler condition and
acquired land in order to gain immense wealth and express their position of elitism (Harris). The
prompt initial land inequality fostered concentrated political power as well. Elites controlled the
governments in order to protect their interests and diminish all possibilities of shifts of power to the
lower classes (De Ferranti). After many countries in Latin America received their independence,
limited change of conditions occurred and the elite maintained control in the new republics. The basis
for economic inequality remained the same and the patterns persisted. In the early 19th century, the
majority of countries had developed republican democracies yet the upper class still had the power to
act in their own interests. A direct bearing established the extent of the elite s ability to influence the
formation of government policies. Landowners opposed any institutional change that could transfer

Love And Responsibility In A. S. Byatt s The Pink Ribbon
A. S. Byatt s story, The Pink Ribbon, is about the havoc wreaked on a marriage as a result of a
traumatic experiences, as well as how the struggle between duty and love manifests itself. In this story,
a man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and
resentment after his transition from spouse to caretaker. Through seemingly imagined encounters with
a beautiful young woman, this man is reminded of his wife and what it is like to have meaningful
contact with another person, which causes him to make a choice in the name of mercy, both for
himself and his wife. Byatt shows the deterioration of James and Madeleine s relationship through the
use of diction, irony, and symbols. As a result of those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The word mass is used to describe Mado or her characteristics around the beginning of the story. The
word is first used in order to describe her hair, which implies a loss of her former beauty and strength.
The second time it is mentioned it is used to describe her brain as a mass of thick plaques and tangles
of meaningless stuff (201 202), which shows how absent she really is in their relationship due to her
dementia. She is no longer an active participant in their relationship, rather she is just kind of there.
The word intelligent, or some form of it, is used throughout much of the story. Madeleine valued and
embraced her own intelligence and that of others, while Mado is not even capable of coherent thought
or speech. Mado s inability to hold even a simple conversation with anyone only emphasizes the one
sidedness of James and Madeleine s current relationship. The word intelligent also serves as a form of
irony in the story by showing the differences between Madeleine and Mado. Madeleine was a teacher
before WWII, while during and after the war she worked in the aptly named intelligence department.
Mado, on the other hand, finds enjoyment in fantastical television shows that were created for
children. Another source of irony is the fact that although she became ill and completely lost herself,
Madeleine still remained the dominant person in the relationship. Before her dementia Madeleine was

Into The Charge Of The Light Brigade Essay
The depictive lines of Alfred Lord Tennyson s poem Into the Valley of Death/Rode the six hundred...
Cannon to the right of them/ Cannon to the left of them The Charge of the Light Brigade has long held
its place in the public imagination. According to Denis Cummings, it is a symbol of heroic failure, a
Victorian icon of sacrifice and devotion to duty. The poem itself is a modified and dramatic depiction
of what the war was like. The poem, The Charge of the Light Brigade revises the real horrors of the
war by rendering it into more dramatic, motivational, and personal events.
Although the article, The Battle of Balaclava, by William Howard Russell and the poem, The Charge
of the Light Brigade by Alfred Lord Tennyson tell about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But thanks to that, readers can experience the war as if they were a part of it. The first line was broken
it was joined by the second, they never halted or checked their speed an instant. (89) Standing in the
middle of hundreds of horses racing at 30 mph is pretty ghastly. Getting struck by one of those horses
can end your life, but these soldiers raced to protect their country and to defeat their opponent. Not
only does vocabulary affect the dramaticism of the story, it gives a lifelike experience of what the war
was like. The effect of personalization can change how the story is accepted and understood. The
article could have just said that there were dead bodies, but it states, The plain was strewed with their
bodies and with carcasses of horses. (89)
Poetry typically delivers events more deeply and memorably than the original. The Charge of the
Light Brigade renders the horrors by making it more dramatic, patriotic, and personal. Conceivably,
The Charge of the Light Brigade does not emphasize and thoroughly describe the original story. But,
both the poem and the article emphasize that these 600 soldiers will always be remembered.
Nevertheless, the poem s rhythm and conveyance will have a long lasting and heartfelt effect in reader

Iranian Sexual Revolution
Although family law and official discourse still remain patriarchal, however, globalization, women s
movement activities, improving levels of education, improving new communication technologies and
the implementation of modernization s policies, have led Iranians to confront dominant sexual
discourse through a modern life style and they also try to customize the traditional perceptions of
sexuality with new attitudes.
These transformations are remarkable enough to some scholars who called it a kind of sexual
revolution. For instance, Pardis Mahdavi (2007) after her long time investigation on the private life
style of a part of the urban youth in Iran, stated that in spite of legal prohibitions against pre marital
sex, homosexuality, dancing parties and alcohol consumption, contemporary youths in Iran oppose
these constrains and make their own definitions of life style and relationships. The writer proposed a
kind of revolution to represent the new changes. Mahdavi (2007) argued that the sexual revolution
they believe, they are engaging in, is about changing sexual discourse, pushing the limits with regards
to restrictions on social behaviors (such as style of dress, youth congregation, drinking and dancing)
and attacking the fabric of morality under which the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beside increasing the divorce rates and decreasing the marriage and fertility rates, the model of gender
relationships has changed. Today women are active everywhere, in different areas of social, political
and economic dimensions. The traditional model of the family in which male authority is the core of
relationships is going to be abolished and women are challenging their traditional maternal roles. It
seems that gender division of roles and duties are no longer as established as before. Family values are
being replaced by individualism and pre marital relationships are increasing (Iran, Parlement report,

Cognitive Theory
The cognitive restructuring theory commands that one s personal impractical philosophies are
precisely responsible for producing dysfunctional feelings and their subsequent behaviors, such as
anxiety, despair, and social extractions; and humans can be purged of such feelings and their validities
by demolishing the theories that give them life. The cognitive restructuring model is a proven model
in addressing behavioral issues concerning stroke victims and adolescents. Team A s focus will be
addressing the perceptions into these interventions. Behavioral changes can be difficult, but for a
stroke victim it can be even more challenging due to cognitive deficiencies after a stroke. These

An example of an exercise used to assist clients is documenting daily events that bring on unwanted
actions. Adolescents suffering from depression are often asked to record thoughts on situations
happening is day to day life. When a situation happens that furthers or intensifies the clients unwanted
behavior, thoughts are recorded, this is to monitor and change specific behaviors and thoughts. By
reporting ones thoughts and feelings the individual can document what has happened, what thoughts
are happening, and what changes need to be made to improve the unwanted behavior. By continuing
to document feelings and thoughts of depression, the adolescent will be able to notice a change in their
own behavior; they will be able to realize that emotions are dictating how they react to certain events.
With the documenting process of cognitive restructuring, many individuals will be capable of
changing their own thought process for the better. Each session with the depressed adolescent should
be well structured with feedback from the adolescent, frequent feedback allows the client to be heavily
involved and will bring about different emotions. Emotions are the overall goal, being aware of one s
emotional state during life events is a key to altering the depressive behavior. Further intervention
steps in cognitive restructuring for adolescents will include coping skills and scheduling. Depression

Stanley Milgram Experiment
Stanley Milgram was a psychologist at Yale University who was interested in the levels of obedience
people shown to an authority figure. Obedience is a type of social influence whereby somebody acts in
response to a direct order from another person, it is defined as compliance with commands given by
an authority figure . (LLC, 2016). Milgram studied obedience in 1963 by carrying out a laboratory
experiment, Milgram wanted to test the idea that German s are different as the Germans obeyed Hitler

Abolitionist Movement
After America was founded in 1776 many people decided to colonize and live in this unfamiliar land.
The land already had their own natives, but most of the travelers that colonized there did not respect or
care about them or their land. The people wanted to make this land their property and country. To have
a strong country people needed power and one thing that made that power more accessible was
enslaving the natives and making them their property. Enslaving natives later become part of their
culture and it later spread to enslaving African Americans. African Americans were seen as people that
were stronger and more hard working than the Native Americans. This led to African Americans
getting captured and being sent to America to work. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Many of the sources used were the same information, but with little pieces of supplementary
information. The fact that people fought to abolish slavery was a courageous movement, but there
were some negative aspects. Many people did not like the fact that people thought slavery was a
horrible concept and it caused huge conflict. When the number of slaves started to decrease many new
problems emerged such as plantation owners not having enough help to grow crops. As slavery

Women in Movies Essay
Women in Movies Since the 1940 s, movies have predominately portrayed women as sex symbols.
Beginning in the 1940 s and continuing though the 1980 s, women did not have major roles in movies.
When they did have a leading role the women was either pretreated as unintelligent and beautiful, or
as conniving and beautiful: But she was always beautiful. Before the 1990 s, men alone, wrote and
directed all the movies, and the movies were written for men. In comparison, movies of the 90 s are
not only written and directed by women, but leading roles are also held by older and unattractive
women. In this paper I will show the variations and growth of women s roles in movies from the 1940

Effective Leadership Approaches From Biblical Perspective...
Introduction
Effective leadership approaches from a biblical perspective consist of God s nature in his manifested
character. Christian leaders are willing to pay the price to lead in Christ s affliction. Paul said there is a
price to pay in order to lead and Jesus reminded us, Remember what I told you: A servant is not
greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my
teaching, they will obey yours also (John 15:20, New International Version). Christian leaders need
core attributes of God s styles and approaches, support and linkage from scriptures, and knowledge of
his leadership models of truth for effective leadership. However, these perspectives will gave me a
better appreciation and insight of who God is and who I can be with his guidance.
Core Attributes
There are many people in scripture that God has placed in leadership roles. Jesus himself, David,
Moses, Paul, Peter, Abraham and many others are some of those leaders. There are core attributes
discussed in the lecture that personally reflect my opinion of what an effective leader of Christ needs
such as, a shared vision, model of the way, empowerment of others, challenge of the process, and
encouragement of the heart. Leaders establish a model of the way others should be treated and how
goals should be pursued, with standards and examples of what others should follow by exemplifying
God s example. Christian leaders inspire a shared vision to make a difference

How Has Social Class Made In My Life
The difference that social class has made in my life is that it leaves no aspect of life untouched. If I
had to rank my families social class, I would consider us as the lower middle class. My husband and I
are the main sole providers in our family and we work for the upper middle classes. We live off from
paycheck to paycheck and we struggle here and there, but we learn how to manage our money wisely
on things that are needed the most.
Social class determines what opportunities you ll have in life. It also determines what kind of structure
values you ll attach with those experiences. For example, if there are two people one from an upper
class and the other one from a lower class; they both cannot share the same values or goals. Their

Essay about Performance Appraisal
Performance Appraisal
Appropriate Approach for Performance Appraisal
Kudler Foods deals with the supply of both domestic and imported foods. The food store comprise of
five departments with specialized classification of skills and competencies. In order to develop and
meet the major requirements of an organisation, managers should design an assessment form designed
to evaluate employee s performance regarding their level of understanding and the quality of their
work. According to Cromwell Kolb (2004, p. 71 100) an annual performance appraisal is a
management system that enables managers to set management objectives, processes and practices that
ensure effective management, motivation and development of every member of the team. ... Show

Appraisals are conducted in order to fulfill their obligation, some others do it to fill a report in their
file but the successful organisations understand the benefits of appraisals which are to strategically
manage performance of employees. The process provides a record of individual performance recorded
over a given period of time. The process gives every one an opportunity to reflect on future
development and how to meet one s expectations. The output of the performance appraisal helps the
supervisor in determining salary increases and gives an opportunity to focus on future goals through
identifying the underlying issues and correcting them to attain better results in the future which
benefits both the employee and the organization (Sanchez Levine, 2009, p. 53).
The job based approach involves analyzing performance through the descriptions of employee skills.
This shows the effectiveness of performance of various duties and the analysis is used in developing a
compensation package. The person based approach on the other hand analyses the skills and
competencies of individual employee. The compensation package therefore depends on the level of
skills that employees possess. In this case I think that the best method for Kudler Foods to use in
performance appraisal and in determining compensation package will be the job based method which
analyses the various

Performance Enhancing Drugs Essay
Performance Enhancing Drugs
When most people think of performance enhancing drugs the first thought that comes to their minds is
the illegal ones like steroids, but today there are more non illegal drugs like creatine and
androstenedione for people today. Creatine is a chemical produced by the kidney and found in meat
product. It helps muscles recover after a workout, which in turn helps athletes bulk up faster
(Gregorian 5). Creatine is used by many of the nations top college sports teams like Nebraska and
Northwestern. The ?Husker Power? strength program uses creatine, where it is meticulously measured

So performance enhancing drugs should not be used because they give the person using them an
unfair advantage, has a high monetary cost to keep getting the drugs, and has many negative side
effects.
Not everyone believes that performance enhancing drugs should be banned. NU football players Jay
Tant and Dwayne Missouri both put on about 30 pounds of muscle during their careers due to creatine
and countless hours in the weight room (Carlton 1). ?Creatine helps weightlifters and runners squeeze
in an extra rep or stair climbs.? It translates into an average gain of 20 30 pounds o of muscle in just a
few months (Schrof 2). That is the good side of the enhancers.
While supporters of performance enhancing drugs have many valid arguments, better evidence
supports that they should not be used. The first argument is the person using them has an unfair
advantage. Columnist Michael Bamburger for Sports Illustrated wrote that athletes seem to rely more
then ever on banned performance enhancers (1). Then just talent, and pure blood, sweat, and tears.

The Influence of Confucianism on Chinese Culture Essays
The Influence of Confucian Culture on Chinese Culture
Introduction
Confucian culture, also known as Confucianism, was founded by Confucius during the Spring and
Autumn Period, which was developed gradually after the Han Dynasty with benevolence as the core.
Since the Han Dynasty, Confucianism was the official ideology and the basis of mainstream ideology
in the vast majority of historical periods of China, and it also influenced many southeast Asian
countries in history. After a variety of shocks, Confucianism was still the core values of China s social
public, and represented the Chinese culture and national tradition in the world (Littlejohn, 2010). In

Confucianism is used by rulers for over two thousand years, which plays an important role in
maintaining the traditional social stability and peace.
However, the Confucian culture is exclusive to the contemporary political culture. In contemporary
China, although socialist political culture has been widely spread and the actually implemented with
the aid of the power of the state apparatus, people are still unable to completely get rid of the influence
and control of traditional Confucian culture. In Confucian culture, the unity political view had the
most influence, and the divine right of authority and the benevolence, righteousness, propriety,

amount of the residual traditional culture values affect the process of political development in a

How White People Receive Their Privilege
I think acknowledging privilege matter. I think white people have more privilege than any other skin
color people. I would like to describe privilege as an advantage given to people. They can use them
anywhere without fearing of anything. Being born in a white rich family also have many advantages in
the society. You don t have to worry about anybody questioning you. I think white people have a
different life comparing to other people. I think it is better for white people to acknowledge their
privilege. How can you acknowledge privilege without doing anything to lessen or end it?
Acknowledge means to accept the truth. If you accept the truth and do nothing about it is meaningless.
Acknowledgment can have a big impact in our life. We all know white people always had and always
will have the same privilege so it s better for them to accept it. For example You are a black person.
You are inside the store buying candy without any intention. Even you are just trying to buy candy
why the cashier always look at you as if you are stealing something. A white person who was doing
the exact activity the cashier would not even look twice to him. Why always privilege to white
people? Why negative thinking to another race? I think white people should accept the truth and
should respect their privilege. They always should use their privilege in the right way. They are
fortunate to have all this white privilege.

Essay on The Cuban Revolution
The time of the Cuban Revolution was a great deal of turmoil, not just in Cuba but in almost every
corner of the world. It was 1945, shortly after the end of World War Two, and the Cold War was taking
off between the United States and the Soviet Union. Cuba, in the middle of its own war, was caught up
in the international politics of the Cold War. The interaction between international and domestic
politics played a major role in the outcome of the revolution. The result of the revolution left Fidel
Castro in charge of Cuba. The Platt Amendment states that the United States has the ability to interfere

Their focus was national sovereignty, reform, economic growth, a redistribution of wealth, and social
justice(the cuban revolution p 62). Finally, in 1965, Cuba officially became communist with the
emergence of the Cuban Communist Party, with Fidel Castro as their leader. Castro s involvement
with the foreign and domestic politics during the early Cold War period greatly influenced the
outcome of the Cuban Revolution. Without the actions taken by foreign powers like the United States
and Russia, some events on the domestic front may have had very different results. It is important to
understand how every nation s foreign policies can influence more than just one other nation, and this
was especially true for Cuba. It was this mix and chain of events which produced the communist Cuba
that we are familiar with today. The most popular of Fidel Castro s documents is La Historia Me
Absolvera also known as History Will Absolve Me. This was a speech given by Castro at his trial for
leading an attack on the Moncada Barracks. Castro s speech discussed many of his ideas and beliefs
that justified his reasoning to form his revolutionary movement against Fulgencio Batista. History
Will Absolve Me, shows the revolutionary ideologies of Castro and how he later revolts to power.
Although, his speech was about his thought on the revolutionary movement, it also was to show the
foundation of his Moncada attack and what he was trying to achieve. Castro mentions in

Different strains of Ebola may have slight changes in their structure, indicating that virulence is
mutagenic. The virus contains a nucleocapsid which gives it some virulence as well.
Mode of transmission:
Ebola is transmitted in humans through the direct contact of blood or bodily fluids of a person infected
with the virus. Examples of these fluids include diarrhea, sweat, vomit, semen, urine, and breast milk.
The virus can enter through breaks in the skin or mucous membranes including the nose, mouth and
eyes. Ebola is not an airborne disease that is transmitted through sneezing and coughing however large
droplets from a person who is sick could be infectious.
Incubation Period of the Disease:
The time interval from infection with the virus to the onset of symptoms, better known as the
incubation period is 2 21 days. The average period is 8 10 days. Humans are not infections until they
develop symptoms. Ebola is an acute viral infection with a rapid onset, brief period of symptoms and
resolution within days.

Lucid Dreamer
I am a lucid dreamer. The dream is like an image in person s mind. I often dream of perusing my
goals. It is a powerful tool that guides me always. My parents always encourage me to dream and
think life in a visual image that helps me to move forward. However, sometimes I fail toward my
dreams and fall down. Eventually, I defeat all sarcastic situations with the help of courage that I get
from my Parents, Professors, and Friends. I like to be a visual thinker. Going to another gathering of
individuals is dependably somewhat alarming, and most would fear an exchange to a place where they
have hardly any colleagues, however I am sure of my capacity to mix in with the campus community

The Iraqi Kurds
On September 25, almost 93 percent of Kurds voted for independence from Iraq in a nonbinding
referendum. The central government in Baghdad declared the referendum unconstitutional and
demanded that Kurdish leaders reject it. Worried that independence for Iraqi Kurds would stir up their
own Kurdish populations, Turkey threatened to impose sanctions or even use military force on the
Kurds; Iran closed its border with Kurdistan and is backing Shia militias who fought with the Iraqi
army against the peshmerga. Regional actors worried about their own stability were not the only ones
to condemn the Kurds. Prior to the referendum, the United States pushed Kurdish leaders to delay the
vote lest it distract from the more urgent task of defeating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Iraqi government crushed the rebels, inflicting over 100,000 deaths on the Kurdish people. In
1988, the regime systematically murdered as many as 182,000 Kurds and razed at least 4,000 Kurdish
villages to the ground in a what was clearly a genocide. Following the 1991 Gulf War, when Saddam
Hussein was viciously persecuting Kurdish and Shi a populations, the United States instituted a no fly
zone to protect the Kurds, but provided no further help to liberate them from the government that had
slaughtered them en masse.
Following the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, the Kurds emerged as an instrumental partner for stability
and moderation; the US leaned heavily on their support. Under the new Iraqi constitution, the Kurds
gained autonomy, though the exact geography of Iraqi Kurdistan remained undefined, as both the
Kurds and the central government claimed the right to control regions such as Kirkuk. Later, with the
rise of the Islamic State, the Kurds became a primary force fighting the Islamic State, and a key US
partner in the struggle to eradicate the terror group.
Rather than betray the Kurds once again, the United States should stand by one of the best allies it has
in the Middle East. Not only do the Kurds deserve a shot at self determination, but backing up the
Kurds will allow the United States

Media And Political Bias
In this day and age, it s assumed that our information is unfiltered and uncut. This should hardly be a
surprise in the internet era, with popularized search engines that provide unbiased information in a
matter of seconds. To that end, society has numbed itself to biases found in media and tends to follow
what is proclaimed to be true and ethical. This is particularly true in regard to print and televisual
media. Due to society s failure to question these media forms, it frequently becomes coaxed into
converting its ideas to those made by the media. In other words, media outlets consistently have
political leanings that manipulate our understanding of information, particularly in regards to the
public s political beliefs.

In a study produced by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), it was investigated how
the servicing of Fox news influenced presidential votes between 1996 and 2000. The findings
stipulated that towns which began servicing Fox news had an increase in Republican votes in 2000 of
5.9%, while towns that didn t broadcast Fox News had an increase of 7.1% (Vigna and Kaplan, April
2006). This suggests that the political leanings of Fox news influenced voters to abstain from voting
for republican candidates. To put it in other words, the media bias of Fox news influenced the political
leanings of the towns it reached through its bias toward conservative ideologies. Although Fox news is
considered conservative, the effects are undeniable. Even if the effects of Fox news bias are
unexpected, they are undeniable. It is possible that exposure to the Fox conservative agenda prompted
some viewers to analyze and disagree with conservative ideals in general. To be fair, there may have
been other factors that contributed to the change in political bias, including the demographics of towns
that didn t have access to the network. However, it is unlikely that differences in populations
contributed so largely to such a monumental change in consumers voter turnout. Granted, these effects
are the product of only one media outlet; one that promotes a republican belief

What Is Good To Tell Essay
One That is Good to Tell but Not to Experience
There once was a little girl who liked to take small risks. She never was an outgoing person but she
would to do certain things that was the slightest dangerous or not the best choice to take. Everyone
makes mistakes every once in a while that might change their life. Back in third grade I lived in a
suburb of Chicago called Yorkville. It was a lovely neighborhood and I had so many friends there that
I played with almost everyday. I had two friends that were sisters that lived across the street, Ashley
and April, that were probably two or three years younger than me and also twins. Ashley, April and I
all were playing in my driveway and I was a dog so I would follow them around the driveway. It was
hard for me to keep up with them since I was on all fours. So I went in the garage and got a skateboard

Why Is America Considered A Masterpiece
When I think of America, I imagine of a masterpiece. When America was first discovered by
Christopher Columbus, it was a blank canvas with native American details on the rim. These details
represent how the Native Americans have affected America. Since then, every triumph, failure, rise,
and fall that America has had, another part was added. And though this painting was once a blank
canvas, it is now a wonderful painting with landmarks from near and wide, full of every color, and
includes everything important to modern America.
Opportunity. The blank canvas itself represents all of the possibilities that America had. And it gave
the settlers the opportunity to add whatever they wanted to the canvas.

Aboriginal Self Government
Aboriginal self government is a long standing issue that continues to be a struggle for the First Nations
People. To truly understand the scope of Aboriginal self government within First Nations
communities, more effort is needed to understand the legislative system that runs Canada. This issue

Absentee Voting in the United States
The U.S Constitution gives the states considerable latitude in the way of conducting elections. The
American citizens have many opportunities to vote. However, a turnout in American elections has
dramatically decreased over the past several decades. In order to address this issue, majority of states
have allowed absentee voting reforms. These convenient reforms are thought to increase the voter
turnout in the elections, as well as to reduce administrative costs. There are several forms of absentee
voting that are believed to improve overall voting quality. Permanent absentee voting is one of them.
This particular rule allows the voter to vote absentee without requesting an absentee ballot for each
election (Sabato 2013, 98). Generally, permanent absentee voting was available for military voter and
individuals with disabilities in order to increase certain categories of voters. Currently, According to
National Conference of State Legislatures, every state permits an absentee ballot to certain voters.
While 27 states allow no excuse absentee voting, in other 21 states the excuse is required. Eight states
including Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Montana, New Jersey and
Utah offer voters the option to register for no excuse permanent absentee voter status. Five states such

How Does Henri Nouwen Speak In A Pattern Of Christian...
If anyone has the authority to speak on Christian leadership, it is Henri Nouwen because of his
professorship at Ivy League Universities and long standing role as a priest. Yet Nouwen leans not on
either of these credentials; instead, he shares his reflections on leadership that he learned while serving
at Daybreak community for handicapped people. What is more, Nouwen learned the most amazing
leadership principles when he was asked to speak in Washington D. C. on leadership and Daybreak
sent a resident named Bill Van Buren with him. Out of this experience, Nouwen creates a pattern of
Christian leadership based on Jesus temptation in the wilderness. Nouwen believes that all leaders are
similarly tempted. Therefore, Nouwen follows the pattern of task, question and discipline, which give
great insights into a true Christian leader. Furthermore, Nouwen shares many amazing leadership
lessons and the most impactful lessons are: the need for prayer over competence, embracing
brokenness within a leader s life and the role of community in leadership. First of all, Nouwen
addresses the influence of culture upon Christian leadership. His assessment is that the culture seems
to think that competence is all that is needed to deal with problems in life. He shares the culture s
sentiment by eloquently stating,
The problem is not lack of faith, but lack of competence. If you are sick, you need a competent doctor;
if you are poor, you need competent politicians; if there are technical

they do not present similar opinions on larger concerns like religion and the role of community. This is
a concept that is interwoven into the framework of the Old English elegies The Wanderer and The

Character Analysis Of Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart

Literary Analysis: character analysis
The introduction of a new culture to another culture can be quite a challenge, as well as life changing
for those individuals who decide to assimilate the new beliefs and customs. The arrival of the
missionaries to Nigeria affected the the Ibo culture and introduced its people to a new set of religious
beliefs and westernized customs. Chinua Achebe s novel, Things Fall Apart, portrays the contrasting
reactions of people to the new culture brought to their clan by the missionaries. Achebe depicts the
story of a prideful father put to shame when his own son decides to embrace the new unfamiliar

logic of the Trinity that captivated him. He did not understand it. It was the poetry of the new religion,
something felt in the marrow. The hymn about brothers who sat in the darkness and in fear seem to
answer a vague and persistent question that haunted his young soul the question of the twins crying in
the bush and the question of Ikemefuna who was killed. (Achebe 147, para. 5). In this new religion,
Nwoye found a refuge from all of the questions that tormented him, ever since his father participated
in the killing of Ikemefuna. The white man was also their brother because they were all sons of God.
(Achebe 145, para.1). This new teaching from the missionaries caught Nwoye s attention because he
could not understand the reason why Ikemefuna had had to be executed, and now more than ever he
was sure that Ikemefuna had been treated unfairly by the people from his village and Okonkwo.
Nwoye s choices regarding his religious conversion affected him, but he was more than happy

Nazi Propaganda, Myths, And Common Stories Essay
Between February 13, 1945 and February 15, 1945, the German city of Dresden was decimated by
Allied bombers. The bombing run, carried out by the RAF and USAAF, raised ethical and moral
debates because the city was neither a industrial nor a political center contributing to the Nazi war
effort. In order to determine the underlying motives behind the Allied attack and the extent to which
the attack was justified, the investigation will analyze Nazi propaganda, myths, and common stories in
response to the attack, the Yalta Conference in February 1945 with events in the winter of 1945
leading up to the attack, and the impact of the attack on the German war efforts. Word Count: 213

of February 13, 1945, 800 British RAF bombers indiscriminately delivered 1,400 tons of high

Dresden was bombed, the Germans could route rail traffic through Dresden to compensate for any
damage caused to Berlin and Leipzig. Nazi Propaganda German Reich Minister of Propaganda Joseph

Examples Of Manipulation In The Knife Of Never Letting Go
People are seduced by signals from the world, but that is manipulation, not reality. Douglas Rushkoff.
The world is full of manipulation and probably will never change. We are constantly seduced by what
others say, and believe what they do. Well, this situation also applies to the book I read, The Knife Of
Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. This story is set in Prentisstown, a small section of the New World.
The Old World has become difficult to live in, and people started moving to a New World. Sounds
weird and unusual, but it s okay for now. Right? Well, things start getting more peculiar, when we find
out that all women were killed by disease, and only men live in Prentisstown. What gets more
unusual, is that men can hear each other s thoughts! However, things start changing when we find out
that women were not killed by the spackles, and the men and boys were manipulated to follow what
their leader says or do. In my opinion, I think that the theme of this story is that the world is full of ...

Outline Discuss the Function of Families in Contemporary...
Outline discuss the function of families in contemporary UK society
The definition of the term family has somewhat gone through radical changes over the past few
decades in the UK, some 30 years ago a family was defined as being father, mother and children.
Some referred to this as the cereal box family as this was typically the type of family to be shown on
television commercials for cereal. This stereotype is more correctly known as the nuclear family,
however changes over the years has meant that this nuclear family is no longer a typical family type
within the UK. This has proven difficult for sociologists to provide a clear definition or generalisation
of the term family and such difficulties will be explored throughout ... Show more content on

The Marxist viewpoint on the family revolves around a capitalist society and believes that the nuclear
family is not a functionally necessary institution, although it is probably the best suited. However,
Marxists believe that the family bases itself upon private property and profit, whereby men marry and
then have children to pass on their profit to and women simply marry the men for financial security.
Together, Marxist feminists also revolve their viewpoint around a capitalist society but focus more on
the woman s role, rather than heirs and profit. They believe that the woman s primary role is based
within the home and therefore can be exploited as a source of cheap labour because she is dependant
on that of her husband s income. The woman, they believe, is a housewife doing home chores to
increase the father s ability to work and thus delivering more to society. Also, by nurturing and
teaching their children to become the next viable source of workers in the future, the woman is
helping society and saving on capitalisation costs. This therefore lays a foundation for their children to
be obedient later in life, punctual and altogether submit to their boss in later life, without the need for
society training these conformities, thus having cost nothing to the capitalist.
Other reasons suggest that the nuclear family is no longer suited or even the most frequent

  • 2. Inequality in Latin America Essay Although Latin America has faced many social, political, and economic issues within the last three centuries, inequality remains one of the most important, historical, and omnipresent aspects of the region s culture. As Europeans took over Latin America during the time of colonization, they implemented many elitist social structures that have held strong and are evident today (Harris). Income inequality is the most visible and greatest disparity that the region faces; yet inequality between gender, ethnicities, and education remain strong and significant problems with a necessity for improvement. Inequality of wealth and disparity of power and influence are Latin American s greatest curses and are at the root of many of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Only few Europeans came over to colonize, but their human capital, technology, wealth, and legal and economic institutions made it effortless to take control. Spain emerged as the leader in colonizing the New World and implemented encomiendas, aiding certain elites and giving little to the rest of the population. The Catholic Church, fueling Spain and Portugal s exclusive ownership of land, led to social mobility and acquisition of titles. Led by elites, the Church had favorable settler condition and acquired land in order to gain immense wealth and express their position of elitism (Harris). The prompt initial land inequality fostered concentrated political power as well. Elites controlled the governments in order to protect their interests and diminish all possibilities of shifts of power to the lower classes (De Ferranti). After many countries in Latin America received their independence, limited change of conditions occurred and the elite maintained control in the new republics. The basis for economic inequality remained the same and the patterns persisted. In the early 19th century, the majority of countries had developed republican democracies yet the upper class still had the power to act in their own interests. A direct bearing established the extent of the elite s ability to influence the formation of government policies. Landowners opposed any institutional change that could transfer power ... • 3. Love And Responsibility In A. S. Byatt s The Pink Ribbon A. S. Byatt s story, The Pink Ribbon, is about the havoc wreaked on a marriage as a result of a traumatic experiences, as well as how the struggle between duty and love manifests itself. In this story, a man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and resentment after his transition from spouse to caretaker. Through seemingly imagined encounters with a beautiful young woman, this man is reminded of his wife and what it is like to have meaningful contact with another person, which causes him to make a choice in the name of mercy, both for himself and his wife. Byatt shows the deterioration of James and Madeleine s relationship through the use of diction, irony, and symbols. As a result of those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The word mass is used to describe Mado or her characteristics around the beginning of the story. The word is first used in order to describe her hair, which implies a loss of her former beauty and strength. The second time it is mentioned it is used to describe her brain as a mass of thick plaques and tangles of meaningless stuff (201 202), which shows how absent she really is in their relationship due to her dementia. She is no longer an active participant in their relationship, rather she is just kind of there. The word intelligent, or some form of it, is used throughout much of the story. Madeleine valued and embraced her own intelligence and that of others, while Mado is not even capable of coherent thought or speech. Mado s inability to hold even a simple conversation with anyone only emphasizes the one sidedness of James and Madeleine s current relationship. The word intelligent also serves as a form of irony in the story by showing the differences between Madeleine and Mado. Madeleine was a teacher before WWII, while during and after the war she worked in the aptly named intelligence department. Mado, on the other hand, finds enjoyment in fantastical television shows that were created for children. Another source of irony is the fact that although she became ill and completely lost herself, Madeleine still remained the dominant person in the relationship. Before her dementia Madeleine was the more direct ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cannon to the right of them/ Cannon to the left of them The Charge of the Light Brigade has long held its place in the public imagination. According to Denis Cummings, it is a symbol of heroic failure, a Victorian icon of sacrifice and devotion to duty. The poem itself is a modified and dramatic depiction of what the war was like. The poem, The Charge of the Light Brigade revises the real horrors of the war by rendering it into more dramatic, motivational, and personal events. But thanks to that, readers can experience the war as if they were a part of it. The first line was broken it was joined by the second, they never halted or checked their speed an instant. (89) Standing in the middle of hundreds of horses racing at 30 mph is pretty ghastly. Getting struck by one of those horses can end your life, but these soldiers raced to protect their country and to defeat their opponent. Not only does vocabulary affect the dramaticism of the story, it gives a lifelike experience of what the war was like. The effect of personalization can change how the story is accepted and understood. The article could have just said that there were dead bodies, but it states, The plain was strewed with their bodies and with carcasses of horses. (89) Poetry typically delivers events more deeply and memorably than the original. The Charge of the Light Brigade renders the horrors by making it more dramatic, patriotic, and personal. Conceivably, The Charge of the Light Brigade does not emphasize and thoroughly describe the original story. But, both the poem and the article emphasize that these 600 soldiers will always be remembered. • 5. Iranian Sexual Revolution Although family law and official discourse still remain patriarchal, however, globalization, women s movement activities, improving levels of education, improving new communication technologies and the implementation of modernization s policies, have led Iranians to confront dominant sexual discourse through a modern life style and they also try to customize the traditional perceptions of sexuality with new attitudes. These transformations are remarkable enough to some scholars who called it a kind of sexual revolution. For instance, Pardis Mahdavi (2007) after her long time investigation on the private life style of a part of the urban youth in Iran, stated that in spite of legal prohibitions against pre marital sex, homosexuality, dancing parties and alcohol consumption, contemporary youths in Iran oppose these constrains and make their own definitions of life style and relationships. The writer proposed a kind of revolution to represent the new changes. Mahdavi (2007) argued that the sexual revolution they believe, they are engaging in, is about changing sexual discourse, pushing the limits with regards to restrictions on social behaviors (such as style of dress, youth congregation, drinking and dancing) and attacking the fabric of morality under which the ... The land already had their own natives, but most of the travelers that colonized there did not respect or care about them or their land. To have a strong country people needed power and one thing that made that power more accessible was enslaving the natives and making them their property. • 10. Effective Leadership Approaches From Biblical Perspective... Introduction Effective leadership approaches from a biblical perspective consist of God s nature in his manifested character. Christian leaders are willing to pay the price to lead in Christ s affliction. Paul said there is a price to pay in order to lead and Jesus reminded us, Remember what I told you: A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also (John 15:20, New International Version). Christian leaders need core attributes of God s styles and approaches, support and linkage from scriptures, and knowledge of his leadership models of truth for effective leadership. However, these perspectives will gave me a better appreciation and insight of who God is and who I can be with his guidance. Core Attributes There are many people in scripture that God has placed in leadership roles. Jesus himself, David, Moses, Paul, Peter, Abraham and many others are some of those leaders. There are core attributes discussed in the lecture that personally reflect my opinion of what an effective leader of Christ needs such as, a shared vision, model of the way, empowerment of others, challenge of the process, and encouragement of the heart. Leaders establish a model of the way others should be treated and how goals should be pursued, with standards and examples of what others should follow by exemplifying God s example. Christian leaders inspire a shared vision to make a difference ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The output of the performance appraisal helps the supervisor in determining salary increases and gives an opportunity to focus on future goals through identifying the underlying issues and correcting them to attain better results in the future which benefits both the employee and the organization (Sanchez Levine, 2009, p. 53). The job based approach involves analyzing performance through the descriptions of employee skills. This shows the effectiveness of performance of various duties and the analysis is used in developing a compensation package. The person based approach on the other hand analyses the skills and competencies of individual employee. The compensation package therefore depends on the level of skills that employees possess. • 18. How White People Receive Their Privilege I think acknowledging privilege matter. I think white people have more privilege than any other skin color people. I would like to describe privilege as an advantage given to people. They can use them anywhere without fearing of anything. Being born in a white rich family also have many advantages in the society. You don t have to worry about anybody questioning you. I think white people have a different life comparing to other people. I think it is better for white people to acknowledge their privilege. How can you acknowledge privilege without doing anything to lessen or end it? Acknowledge means to accept the truth. If you accept the truth and do nothing about it is meaningless. Acknowledgment can have a big impact in our life. We all know white people always had and always will have the same privilege so it s better for them to accept it. For example You are a black person. You are inside the store buying candy without any intention. Even you are just trying to buy candy why the cashier always look at you as if you are stealing something. A white person who was doing the exact activity the cashier would not even look twice to him. Why always privilege to white people? Why negative thinking to another race? I think white people should accept the truth and should respect their privilege. They always should use their privilege in the right way. They are fortunate to have all this white privilege. 2. It was 1945, shortly after the end of World War Two, and the Cold War was taking off between the United States and the Soviet Union. Cuba, in the middle of its own war, was caught up in the international politics of the Cold War. The interaction between international and domestic politics played a major role in the outcome of the revolution. The result of the revolution left Fidel Castro in charge of Cuba. Castro s involvement with the foreign and domestic politics during the early Cold War period greatly influenced the outcome of the Cuban Revolution. Without the actions taken by foreign powers like the United States and Russia, some events on the domestic front may have had very different results. It is important to understand how every nation s foreign policies can influence more than just one other nation, and this was especially true for Cuba. It was this mix and chain of events which produced the communist Cuba that we are familiar with today. The most popular of Fidel Castro s documents is La Historia Me Absolvera also known as History Will Absolve Me. This was a speech given by Castro at his trial for leading an attack on the Moncada Barracks. Castro s speech discussed many of his ideas and beliefs that justified his reasoning to form his revolutionary movement against Fulgencio Batista. History Will Absolve Me, shows the revolutionary ideologies of Castro and how he later revolts to power. Depletion of fossil fuels and environmental considerations have led engineers and scientists to anticipate the need to develop a clean, renewable and sustainable energy system (yutsel et ... A M Research Statement Research Statement Nilabja Guha Texas A M University My current research at Texas A M University is in a broad area of uncertainty quantification (UQ), with applications to inverse problems, transport based filtering, graphical models and online learning. My research projects are motivated by many real world problems in engineering and life sciences. In my current postdoctoral position in the Institute for Scientific Computation (ISC) at Texas A M University, I have worked with Professor Bani K. Mallick from the department of statistics and Professor Yalchin Efendiev from the department of mathematics. I have collaborated with researchers in engineering and bio sciences on developing rigorous uncertainty quantification methods within the Bayesian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A hierarchical Bayesian model is developed in the inverse problem setup. The Bayesian approach contains a natural mechanism for regularization in the form of a prior distribution, and a LASSO type prior distribution is used to strongly induce sparseness. We propose a variational type algorithm by minimizing the Kullback Leibler divergence between the true posterior distribution and a separable approximation. The proposed method is illustrated on several two dimensional linear and nonlinear inverse problems, e.g., Cauchy problem and permeability estimation problem. The proposed method performs comparably with full Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) in terms of accuracy and is computationally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Outline Discuss the Function of Families in Contemporary... Outline discuss the function of families in contemporary UK society The definition of the term family has somewhat gone through radical changes over the past few decades in the UK, some 30 years ago a family was defined as being father, mother and children. Some referred to this as the cereal box family as this was typically the type of family to be shown on television commercials for cereal. This stereotype is more correctly known as the nuclear family, however changes over the years has meant that this nuclear family is no longer a typical family type within the UK. This has proven difficult for sociologists to provide a clear definition or generalisation of the term family and such difficulties will be explored throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Marxist viewpoint on the family revolves around a capitalist society and believes that the nuclear family is not a functionally necessary institution, although it is probably the best suited. However, Marxists believe that the family bases itself upon private property and profit, whereby men marry and then have children to pass on their profit to and women simply marry the men for financial security. Together, Marxist feminists also revolve their viewpoint around a capitalist society but focus more on the woman s role, rather than heirs and profit. They believe that the woman s primary role is based within the home and therefore can be exploited as a source of cheap labour because she is dependant on that of her husband s income. The woman, they believe, is a housewife doing home chores to increase the father s ability to work and thus delivering more to society. Also, by nurturing and teaching their children to become the next viable source of workers in the future, the woman is helping society and saving on capitalisation costs. This therefore lays a foundation for their children to be obedient later in life, punctual and altogether submit to their boss in later life, without the need for society training these conformities, thus having cost nothing to the capitalist. Other reasons suggest that the nuclear family is no longer suited or even the most frequent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
