This document summarizes Marxist approaches to explaining crime. It discusses the key elements of the traditional Marxist view: (1) that capitalism creates conditions that lead to crime due to poverty, inequality and alienation; (2) that the legal system serves the interests of the ruling class; and (3) that crime is used ideologically to distract from inequalities. It also examines Neo-Marxist perspectives, including Taylor et al's critical criminology which incorporates labeling theory. While these Marxist theories provide useful structural insights, they are criticized for being overly deterministic and for ignoring non-class factors influencing crime.
