- …..and the “Witney Shopping” website which gives the existing businesses (many of them independents) the opportunity to reach new markets both the map and the website are commercially sustainable and now set up, will require no more public funding. It has given the town centre businesses a brand and to get behind. Next: - Has it worked?
- What has the impact been? 300 jobs have been created on the site – great timing as there had been an increase in unemployment Retailers engaged with the town forum since last spring Partners on the Forum able to link them directly to Job Centre Plus and LOCAL venues for assessment and staff training sessions Through the Forum able to link with Stagecoach – green travel plans and encourage workers to use busses rather than car
- Everyone is delighted with the new car park – traders delighted as it is a huge draw to bring shoppers into the town Shoppers are delighted – it is light, airy, user friendly and feels safe BUT – there is still another larger, free car park on the other side of the high street This is an additional facility so not drawing all people away from existing parts of the town Choice in the town Partnership still working – top 2 floors rezoned to 5 hour stay in response to discussions with retailers
- The whole town centre has a real buzz about it The full shopping offer is still spread throughout the town centre – Marriotts has been a genuine addition, not competition Traders across all areas of the town report an increase in footfall
- A real endorsement for the scheme is the tangible confidence in the town it has sparked The old New Look and Dorothy Perkins premises (they have relocated to larger units in Marriotts) already re let to Lakeland and Burton Woolgate Centre is extending as we speak Extension anchored by Next – classic dumbbell effect in the town centre – 2 big draws at either end of the town centre The town is now fit for purpose for coming decades – you can sense the real pride in the town now
