This document defines market structure as the organizational and other characteristics of a market. It then lists and describes the four main types of market structures: monopolistic competition, perfect competition, monopoly, and oligopoly. Monopolistic competition involves many producers selling differentiated products. Perfect competition features identical and undifferentiated products. A monopoly has only one provider. Oligopoly is controlled by a small number of dominant firms. Examples are provided for each type of market structure.
