Analysis of magazines

BIG bold Masthead (House style)
Selling line
Headline/ Anchorage
Plug
Kicker
The selling line is used to sell the magazine to the
reader. The selling line tends to be a competition or free
features that you would benefit from if you bought the
magazine. Kerrang tend to selling lines at the top of all
of their magazines to get the reader to buy it. It is a good
source of promotion. Kerrang put the selling line in bold
font and use the feature colour (yellow) to make it stand
out.
Kerrang use a very big and bold masthead. This stands
out and is the feature of the front cover. Kerrang use
their ‘Logo’ as the title on every cover so that it is
house style and people remember it. It works with the
colour scheme and becomes the biggest and first focus
on the magazine front cover. The catchy masthead will
increase the popularity of the magazine.
Like most magazines Kerrang have a feature article
photo. This photo is the main photo on the magazine
cover. Kerrang tend to use a lot of medium close up
shots. This makes the audience feel up and close with
the celebrity and feel as if they are about to indulge in
their personal life. Kerrang uses studio lighting and
enhance colours so that the photo is catchy, clear and
bright. They tend to position the photo to the right hand
side so their is more room to work with on the left.
Kerrang tries to make the images simple yet exciting to
encourage the reader to buy the magazine.
Crowdedness
Colour
Kerrang use the basic black and white simple colouring
to keep it basic but then use a feature colour, this
additional colour adds emotion to the magazine and
runs through the whole magazine. The colour tends to
create a mood or style that connotes the style and
atmosphere of the music, this matches the music to
give the audience a sense of the theme, music and
atmosphere- making them feel involved and them to
buy it. The colour also makes the magazine seem more
light and airy.
Kerrang use Headline and anchorage as a pull factor. The
use of headline and anchorage on Kerrang is bold and a
focus point. They use big bold headings with catchy story
titles so that the audience feels more attracted to the
magazine. Kerrang highlight some of the text with the
feature colour so the words ‘Hayley’ and ‘your’ is in
highlight so they stand out more. These words are personal
and make the reader feel like their going to have a
connection with the person on the front cover. They also
use quotes from sentences that hold a bit of tension to
make the reader want to read more, they are often cliff-
hanger quotes so make the audience want to find out more.
Kerrang front covers have a tendency of being busy and
over crowded, (this one isn’t so bad)They like to add a lot of
features and promotion lines so that the audience feels like
the magazine is full of loads of different and interesting
things. Kerrang are trying to widen their audience by adding
more variety and more things to their magazine. This makes
their audience stats higher. Kerrang use feature bands/
musicians every week but still like to add different varieties
and bands to widen the range and audience.
Kerrang have used a plug at the bottom of the cover. The
plug is what is free with the magazine (competitions,
discounts, tickets, posters) This makes the reader feel like
they are getting something back from buying the magazine
and that they are going to get something in return for it. This
can often be used as an attraction to the magazine.
The kicker used on the Kerrang front cover is in bold
writing to break up the page and to make it stand out
quiet a lot. This is something that the reader might read
first so it is very catchy and stands out. ‘Excess all areas’
gives the feeling that the reader is going to get personal
with the entertainer so they will buy it as they feel like
they are getting exclusive information. This is good for
super fans or just typical music readers.
Menu strip
Flash
Date line
Barcode
Cover lineCover line
Kerrang like to include a lot of cover lines as they
attract more readers. The feature band/ singer on the
front of the cover is what attracts the more ‘super fans’
but for more everyday readers and people who read
magazines more the cover lines are good for attracting
them. The cover lines tend to be in bold or a little
photo of them so that they still manage to grab the
readers attention but they don’t take the main focus
off the splash image and feature. Cover lines are a
really good way of keeping regular readers happy as
they feature more then just the feature act.
Flash is good promotion. It is a catchy word that is
instant and tends to have more promotion for the
magazine continuing after it. So this could be like ‘also
free competitions to enter’ the word ‘also’ is the flash
and the rest is the promotion. On this example the flash
is ‘plus’ which is bold, in the same font as the logo and
the feature colour so it really stands out. The promotion
is then the rest of the context that is going to be in the
magazine.
This flash is really good as it is giving the reader a taste
for the magazine so they get more upbeat about it and
is almost a suspense for what is going to happen which
is going to drive the audience to buy it. This shows that
Kerrang are showing loads of acts to please more of the
audience and its making sure that there is going to be
something for everyone in it.
Kerrang like to include a lot of cover lines as they attract more
readers. The feature band/ singer on the front of the cover is
what attracts the more ‘super fans’ but for more everyday
readers and people who read magazines more the cover lines
are good for attracting them. The cover lines tend to be in
bold or a little photo of them so that they still manage to grab
the readers attention but they don’t take the main focus off
the splash image and feature. Cover lines are a really good
way of keeping regular readers happy as they feature more
then just the feature act.
Barcodes a self explanatory for the term of ‘you use them to
pay for them’ but here’s more information.
The reason for barcodes on magazines is that the magazine
industry requires the ability to distinguish the various issues of
a given year’s magazine. Magazines all require barcodes as
stores have an Electronic sales system which allows them to
see the sales and this directs the stock and reorder system. It is
now just expected for a magazine to have a barcode.
The date line again is very self explanatory and doesn't
need much explaining. But again it is so that the readers
know the addition they're on and sales people can keep
up with the issue and what should be in stock.
The menu strip is what is going to be in the magazine.
It is a taster/ sample of what to expect when you buy
it. On Kerrang it is a run down of the bands, singers
that are going to be featured in the magazine. This is
at the bottom after you have seen the splash image
and all of the cover lines this is the basic run down of
what else to expect music wise. All of the other
aspects (competitions, posters) are Flash features
and cover lines so the menu is the menu of music.
Double page spread
Props
In this photo the props used are very fun,
senseless and a focus point. This attracts
the audience to want to look at the band
and read the article. It gives of fun vibes
for the band and almost excites the reader
to want to find out more, in a bizarre way
its almost a mystery prop and makes the
reader to want to find out more.
Lighting
The lighting used in the photo is key lighting
which is focused on the floor. This creates the
foreground to be really light and the
background to be darker. This adds a bit of a
dingy dark mood to the photo. The
atmosphere the light creates reflects and
meets with the props as the lighter part is the
bunny prop with carrot and the rest of I is
darker which is saying the band is quiet
mysterious.
Colour
The colour used on the double page is very
basic (black and white) then with hints and
feature points of red. The red creates the main
focus so is used on the title, quote, letter form
at the start of the sentence, and some
promotion features.
Something Kerrang does is they mix up the
feature colour on each magazine to fit the
featured band and their style so the red can
mean fierce, love, pain etc.. so the use of the
feature colour will impact on how the reader
feels when first looking at the band and their
mood. This is something that Kerrang is known
for and is their house style so them using this
as a focus colour for important information can
be very beneficial.
Bold title
Kerrang use a really catchy title to attract the
reader attention. They use bold fonts and
colours (often the feature colour)
The bold title used often sets the page off. It
brings emotion and attitude to the page.
Because of catchy title the article is more
likely to be read so Kerrang really go all out
with the focus of the title.
Credits
Credits are really simple and basically just tell the audience who did certain parts
of the work so Kerrang displayed them in a small font under the header so that
they don’t become a focus point or a main point but they’re still there for the
reader to get credits.
Header
The header basically tells the audience what is going to be in the article as a bit of
a preview to what they're about to read. It is used to pull the audience into the
article and almost fill them with adrenaline to want to read more. Kerrang have
placed this under the title so the reader reads this directly after the catch title so
that they read the whole article. It almost finishes the draw in of the reader so it
is really powerful and direct so that it really makes them want to read it.
Promotion for other things
Kerrang uses promotion a lot. They use promotion on the double page spread at the right hand side on the bottom
of the page. This is used to make the reader want to keep reading this issue and then buy other issues after this. The
use of promotion in Kerrang is low key but bold. They don't add it everywhere; but when they do add it they use
catchy phases and bold titles and also the use of a feature colour- this means it breaks down the page and stands out
more.
Half a page scanned photo
There is a whole image covering the left side of the
page. It is scanned onto the page, the image is a long
shot of the band, the fact it is a long shot indicates the
band. You can really get to see the whole band, this
allows the reader to get to see a full view of the band
before having to read it. The fact there is an equal
balance also becomes a bit of an eye game for the
reader, they think that the photo is more then the text
so they are more interested in reading. The full page
image makes the reader want to read the article as it is
attracting them towards the article. The photo used on
half the page is very active and happy, this gives the
reader a feel for the music and the genre.
Balance and contrast
On the Kerrang double page spread there is an equal
balance between text and image. The balance between
a full page image and a full page of text is a very direct
balance, this eases the thought of too much text and
creates a really chilled and informal atmosphere to the
article. I think it is really organised looking and takes
the busy stressful theme off the front cover, it is airy
and allows a pleasurable read. The right hand text page
is also divided quiet well, there is a lot of text on the
right page which could potentially look over crowded
but the split up of promotion bands and the use of big
banner headings makes it more broken down and
simple to read.
Quote
There is a quote used across the centre of the double
page spread. This quote is practically in the centre of
the double pages which naturally becomes eye caching
and a focus point to the audience. The use of the quote
splits up the text and image very directly which I think is
a good split between them both. The quote is also in
capital letters and is in the colours of the theme. This
makes it more eye-catching and more of an attraction
to the audience. The font is very bold and the depth of
it adds to the feeling of the article.
Text
For the actual article text the font is really easy and basic. This makes the reading in itself more relaxed and it is
good for all reading abilities as it is complex and easy. Again this text style makes the magazine more airy and
calm on the inside. It also drives the attention onto the bold crazy fonts which are used in headings and
subheadings. This means there can be more points of focus instead of just having the text all the same colour and
same font. The text that is I a different font or colour then comes becomes more flash to the audience. The
colours of text fit the colour scheme (maybe even set the colour scheme). The reader will automatically see the
bright colour, bold font and catchy title so they will want to read on.
Letter form
The letter form is the starting letter of the article the ‘R’
Kerrang have made it bold but smooth. They used the feature colour to grab the attention and fit it with the theme.
Kerrang also used letter for in red at the start of every new column so the larger letter exaggerates the start of the article and keeps the
focus to the point. As for the start of the red sentences this is a mini preview for what the audience is about to read and creates a break up
between parts of the article.
Columns
The use of columns in this double
page spread are key because if not
then there would be a over crowded
issue which would go against the airy
feelings that are going on. In the
columns are paragraphs which all are
quiet short. This layout is very
smooth but has a good effect visually
on the reader. I really like how the
columns in this article break up the
text and make it really easy and
complex to read.
Minimal leading
Minimal leading is the gap and structure
of the text. Kerrang keep the text all in
line and column for the structure. All of
the sentences tend to end in line with
each other and then there tends to be
the odd lines that is longer then the rest
of them.
The text looks really tidy and well
structured which really adds to the tidy
and airy atmosphere that Kerrang tries to
create throughout the magazine.
Contents page
Heading
The heading of the page is very small for the heading. It is
in the feature colour and the Kerrang house style font-
because of this it stands out well so the sizing doesn’t really
effect it. The heading had the issue number and cover date
under it which is a good way for the reader to keep up to
date and for any collectors to keep up to data also.
Editor information
Subheading
The subheading is a lot bigger then the actual heading, it
again uses the house style font, feature colour and is bold.
This heading is basically creating a split in the page for the
information on ‘this week’ the heading is in a black banner
which also breaks up the page more.
The editor information is giving the editors opinion and
features them and their information. This is on the
contents page so that it doesn't take up loads of room and
is just nicely fitted into the side of the contents page. It is
included so that the editor gets credit and has some time
to talk about whatever they desire (in relevance)
Splash image
There is a splash image used on the contents page as well
as the front cover as it breaks up the page and often
attracts the reader to take notice in the context page as
there is an action photo which is eye-catching and what
the reader is more likely to see and want to take interest
in then just text.
Magazine samples
The contents page tends to be one of the first pages
that is in the magazine as soon as you open the cover its
there. This is then used to show the reader what they
are about to indulge into. The magazine samples are
good for the audience to see the layout and what the
features are.
Tag line
This tag line is very catchy and slides together to
make a very bold statement . This intrigues the
reader as the four bold words sort of hit the reader
to feel them on a personal level and they want to
read on.
Typography
The typography is the way the text is formatted
and laid out. So the typography for the contents
page for Kerrang is bold and stands out. It
follows the house style and is very eye catchy.
This means that the reader feels attracted to the
contents page more. The spacing in-between the
text is quiet a lot (meaning the words are not
bunched together)
Branding
Kerrang always use their ‘logo’ as the heading
or format when they include the word
‘Kerrang’ this means that that the audience
becomes more aware of it and it
automatically becomes a logo that you
remember.
Promotion/ Plug
Even on the inside of the magazine, Kerrang continues to
use plugs to get the audience to feel like they have value
to the magazine. This is also promotion as the audience
feel more connected and feel like they are getting
something back from the magazine so they keep buying
and keep reading the magazine. I think that Kerrang likes
assuring that they are keeping the audience anticipated
and like they have a high value.
Monthly subscriptions
Kerrang have a monthly subscription and use a lot of
promotion, catchy titles and persuasive language so that
people are more likely to buy the magazine subscription.
The use of the word ‘just’ makes the audience feel more
like they can justify the price. The use of exclamation mark
excites the reader and the colour red is stern and makes
the reader feel more upbeat and attracted to the plug so
they will be more likely to look into it and probably buy it.
Evaluation of analysis
I have learnt a lot from the study of Kerrang and I have taken a lot of inspiration into how they lay out and style their work. I want my magazine to have some colour coding like Kerrang, I think I
will take the black and white inspiration with the feature colour running along through the magazine as this is really catchy and draws a lot of attention to the reader. I want my website to have
an airy feel running through it like Kerrang as I really like how relaxing and light it feels when reading it, it is full of information and is a good magazine but it is not overwhelming which as a
reader i really appreciate, I think that Kerrang make the magazine feel gentle so it isn’t too intense which I hope will pass through onto my work.
I also love how personal Kerrang make their audience feel when they read the magazine so I want to add things like:
These will make the reader feel a lot more connected and valued which should hopefully encourage them to buy the magazine more and will just make the magazine a lot better as a read.
Kerrang have added so many aspects to the magazine to make it a better read for their audience and I really like how audience aware they are, they go to large extents to please their audience;
somehow managing to satisfy a wide group of people with their magazine which if you look at their 421,000 readership figure, you would understand why.
I also really like how Kerrang have used the double page spread in a simple way by dedicating half to an image then the other half to text, they then split up this text by using heavier fonts and
colours for starting words and lines so that it breaks up the columns more.

Selling line
Rock sound have used a selling line at the top of the
page which is telling the audience what music is
included in the magazine. The selling line states what is
going to be in the magazine and begins to pull the
correct audience to the magazine. They have put it in
blue and it is quiet bold on the page so stands out
quiet a lot, this should hopefully encourage sales.
Masthead
Rock sound use their logo as the masthead so that people
know the logo and become aware of this, this means a lot of
people will end up knowing the magazine company and will
potentially get them more purchases and more of an
audience. Their logo is pretty simple and automatically tells
you about the style of magazine as the logo is bold, catchy;
and quiet edgy so this will attract the right audience.
Covering over the logo is a flash banner
This flash banner says ‘free stickers and posters’ which is
automatic promotion, it is on the masthead so that people see
it straight away and automatically feel more pressured to buy
it to get the free merchandise.
There are more flash banners used throughout the cover of the
magazine. They are in a yellow font or highlight so that they
stand out. They are very visible, the text in the yellow highlight
is a bold black font in capital letters which adds to the
catchiness.
These flash banners are attracting more people to buy the
magazine as they are reading ‘FREE’ everywhere or ‘PLUS’
which is making the audience feel like they are getting a lot in
the magazine and they will miss out if they don’t buy it.
Secondary lead
There is a little bit of secondary lead going on. I think that
rock sound are trying to make the ‘selling line’ fit more as
they include different genres in the secondary lead. This
means that they are thinking about their audience;
however I also feel like they are trying to cover too many
things. They have used the secondary lead in a good way
by making it bold and using anchorage underneath so
that people are drawn into the band name then the story
line that they are going to cover, this means that more
people will read the article if the encourage is strong and
catchy enough.
Headline
The headline used is the featured artists name across the image.
The headline is in a large font, in caps, bold font and in the
potential feature colour (blue)
The headline is the first thing that you see on the magazine as it
is so bold and catchy. This is good as its something that draws
the audience to the magazine before they read everything else
on the front cover so this is the thing which drives the magazine
to the audience before they read anything else. I think that Rock
sound have managed to make the headline stand out well.
Like a lot of magazines the splash image on the front
cover is a medium close up shot of the feature artist.
When the audience first see this they feel like they are
about to come up close and personal with the artist and
get behind the scenes with them. For the visual side for
the audience to be able to see the face of the artist tends
to get them more excited and then they want to buy the
magazine to read it. The image on the front of this page is
very basic and simple, this means that it is a good easy
front cover which balances out the crowded text with the
image.
Plug
This makes the reader feel like they are getting
something back from buying the magazine and that they
are going to get something in return for it. This can
often be used as an attraction to the magazine. Some
audience members buy the magazine for the plugs so
this is good to get extra audience.
Barcode
The reason for barcodes on magazines is that the magazine
industry requires the ability to distinguish the various issues
of a given year’s magazine. Magazines all require barcodes
as stores have an Electronic sales system which allows them
to see the sales and this directs the stock and reorder
system. It is now just expected for a magazine to have a
barcode.
The date line again is very self explanatory and doesn't
need much explaining. But again it is so that the readers
know the addition they're on and sales people can keep
up with the issue and what should be in stock.

Layout

Colour
Typography
Kicker
The colour used on the front cover of Rock sound is very heavy
and quiet overboard. They don’t really have a colour scheme
going on or a house style. The main colour seems to be blue
which is highlighted a lot so it is not much of a catchy eye
colour so they added yellow and pink which work well as a
highlight and focus colour but they then end up taking the blue
away.
I think the blue would be better if it was minimal and just used
with a house style colour theme as the things in blue are
worthy of highlighting.
The fonts used are very ‘comic sans’ like which is not a bad
thing for the general text. What Rock sound have done is they
have managed to use the different fonts to create the division
between the different types of text. The most important text
lines are bold, heavy looking and a different font which is a
really efficient way to attract the reader without them really
knowing it. The gaps between the text are not too close so it
creates more of a uncrowned vibe but also keeps the work
crisp and tidy.
The kickers used are in bolder writing and stand out to the normal
text. This is so that the reader automatically looks there and it
catches their attention to the magazine. Rock sound has tried to
make it so that the kicker stands out my font but because there is
too much font and coloring going on so it doesn’t stand out as well if
there was a color scheme and less on the page.
The menu strip is at the bottom of the magazine and it basically
informs the reader what is going to be in the magazine. It
almost becomes a bit of a taster and a insight into the magazine.
It works along side the selling line. The selling line sells the top
thing or it shows you the genre so the menu strip backs this up
and shows the audience what they are really going to get from
the magazine and what is in it. The menu strip on Rock sound is
very simple and gets the job done.
The layout is a very standard looking music magazine.
It is very loud and full of headlines. Rock sound have
use quiet a symmetrical layout this basically is saying
that the magazine is balanced. Everything is in line
with each other.
Masthead, headline and menu strip are all in line.
Secondary leads and kickers are in line on either side
to the magazine.
And plugs and flash banners on the bottom are inline.
I think Rock sound have a good layout going on and it
makes the magazine look full of information and
exciting things whilst still being breathable and
manageable.
Double page spread
Heading
The heading on the double page spread is very
bold and stands out. The font is bold but
sophisticated which sets the atmosphere of the
article they are about to read. The heading
doesn’t have a header which basically means that
there is no introduction in the start of the
magazine to ease the reader into it.
Quote
There is a quote used on the bottom of the
page which is from one of the band members.
This text is in a heavy font of white which
stands out on the dark image. It is the same
font as the heading and the same size which
balances out the page whilst making the quote
more of a focus point for the audience. The
good thing about the quote is the personal
feel that the reader gets and you can make it
really catchy and grab the attention of the
reader straight away.
Anchorage
Anchorage is used under the heading. ‘The
bitter end’ which is telling the audience a bit
more on what they are about to read. It is a
smaller size and lighter font so it isn’t used as a
focus point but it is there and can almost make
the audience want to read the article to find out
what the ‘end ‘ is what is going to end and why
it is bitter. So this small catchy sentences
creates a whole new meaning and a million
questions.Branding/ promotion
There is a small amount of branding and
promotion just under the heading and
anchorage. This is the bands album cover. This
is rightfully on there as the audience might not
really know the band but they like the sound
of them so this allows them to see the latest
album and it also just makes more awareness
of the band and gives them a bit of promotion
to advertise their new album and hopefully it
will increase the sales.
Text
The text on this double page spread is very short and simple. It is a light read and very easy to take in which is sometimes good on a double
page spread especially when the photo is the main point of it. The text is in two separate boxes which are across from each other which
balances out the page. The text layout itself is very nice and pleasurable to read. The text is in a paragraph format and all of the lines end in line
with each other. When a new topic, theme or aspect of the text is made there is a new line created so it is easy for the audience to keep up with
the text change. There is also minimal leading and gaps so this means that it is nice and close for a more fluent read. The font is basic and is in
white so that it is easy on the eyes but still shows up on the dark image.
Colour
The colour has changed a lot from the front cover. The magazine now has a more mature
feel to it and it has a bit more of a theme and house style. This is a very dark page with
some lighting patches which represents the type of music that is trying to be put across.
The white text on the dark background is minimal but effective as it looks fresh, crisp and
tidy which is nice to the eyes of the reader.
Credits
Credits are used at the end of the text to give
appreciation to the people that were featured
there is also links to their social media, iTunes
and things like that for promotion the credits
basically show the creators behind the
magazine (page) and what their importance is.
Balance and contrast
The balance on the double page spread is
very equal. The pages are very balanced
with the text and the colours. The contrast
is also balances quiet well. There is a
contrast in the lighting from the front of
the page to the end of the other page. The
colours are contrasted together quiet well
and there is a nice balance between the
colours in the photo and the colours, font
and heaviness of the text. All of these
bounce off each other and make the
magazine page look more alive and better
to look at.
Composition
The composition is really nice on this double
page spread. The magazine is very easy to read
and get around, you don’t get lost and it is not
confusing for the reader. The magazine is made
up of one whole background image that
spreads across the two pages with text
overlaid over the top. The double page spread
is put together thoughtfuly- thinking about the
reader on every angle which makes the
magazine a lot more personal and pleasurable.
Photo
The photo is a very important part of the
double page spread. It brings the whole page
together and is the main aspect. The photo is
very ‘poster’ like in the aspect it takes over
the whole two pages. It takes up the whole
background for the two pages, the one photo
has been made to fit across both of the pages
without looking disproportioned and
stretched.
Because it covers the whole background
there is no white borders or white space
which takes the ‘airy’ feel away so it is more
one to one with the band and they are the
focus. The photo is a medium long shot so
also gives of a personal feeling to the
audience. The photo looks semi staged but
has the vibes of the band in the background
so you really get a sense of the band before
even reading it.
As the image is such good quality it would
suggest that it was scanned onto the page to
give it a high detailed quality.
Lighting
The lighting on the double page spread is not
highly exposed. It is quiet a dark image which
sets a bit of an edgy and off mood
atmosphere, this allows the reader to
automatically sense the band before they
read anything about them. The wall that the
bad is stood against is the most lit part of the
whole image and there shadows are on the
wall which adds more detail to the image and
creates more emotion on the image.
Props
There is not many props used in the image shot
apart from a chair which someone is sat on. The
chair is very classic and simple. You don’t really
notice it as it is not a focus point or feature. The
lack of props shows the main focus is on the band
and shows their simplicity; and really brings out
more of their character.
Clothing
The clothing that the band is wearing is very dark and similar which
shows the charisma of the band and you get first judgements from their
wavy garments. I think that the dark colours blend well with the lighting
and dark situation as their faces become more sharp and glowy. You get
a lot from someone's clothing so them being themselves is a very good
feature to have.
Angle
The photo is taken on slight diagonal angle, as the band members are stood
in a line and to get all of their bodies in and grasp the whole feature and look
they have to take it on a slight angle. This angle adds more of a dimension to
the image and makes it look more framed and structured.
Set
The set that this photo was taken in looks
like a dark attic sort of environment. It is a
very closed space and a bit grunge like.
The closeness of the environment makes
the audience feel more closed in and its a
lot more personal. I like how the clothing,
lighting and set all tie in together to create
one mood which supports the genre and
atmosphere of the music.
Contents page
Heading
The heading for the contents page is moderately small
for a heading but the way they have laid it out in the
column and the fact it is bigger then the subheadings
and text mean s that it still stands out.
It is very toned down and fits in with everything else
colour and font wise and it is satisfying to look at how
it fits in well with the proportion of the rest of the
page.
Date and issue number
The date and issue number is displayed in a very basic
font under the heading. This allows the reader to
identify what issue they are reading and they can keep
up with the issues. This is displayed well under the
heading and it is minimal but adds a nice touch to the
magazine.
Subheadings
The main subheading is in white and the same bold
white font as all the other subheadings but it also has
a baby blue highlight over it which makes it stand out
above the rest of them. This is a small added feature
but it really makes the page pop a bit more and it
breaks up the heading and the text which is good.
The other headings on the page are a little bit bigger
then the main subheading but they are the same font
and colour. These are really simple and work well with
the breaking down of the page into sub categories.
Numbering
There is numbering down the side of the subheadings.
These numbers identify the page that the main
feature is on. The numbers are in a light blue and are
very faint so they don’t stand out and take the main
focus away from the everything else. This again is
showing Rock Sound considering their audience.
Branding
There is no type of branding on the contents page. The
only semi branding would be the heading but even that
is not the logo. This makes the magazine seem less ‘logo’
‘branding’ in your face so it is very minimal and they
simply have the heading as the magazine title.
Splash image
There is a splash image used on the whole of the page
but the main part (the feature singer) is on the right
hand side so that the left hand side can be dedicated
fully to text. This means that the page is well divided
and you get the best of both worlds.
The image is a medium close up so that the audience
feel a sense of closeness and personal connection to the
artist. The artist also is pulling a non serious face and is
being their selves so this makes the audience feel
friendly and a friend like connection to the artist and the
magazine. The photo is very high quality and is nice and
bright so it is a really positive vibe going on.
Typography
The text on this double page spread is very causal and
laid back so it is really relaxing and easy to read.
All of the headings are in a heavier font so they stand
out and they are a slightly bigger size, the normal text
is also white and is nice short and catchy for a contents
page. I really like how the style of text reflects the
simplicity of the magazine and the text content itself.
Quote
There is a quote in the right hand corner under the splash
image. This quote is the only thing on the page that stands
out, which makes it a focus point on the contents page.
This quote is in a different font- it is more cartoon like and
bendy. It is also in a different colour from the rest of the
text which is black (but it still fits in. The quote itself is a
bit of a pulling feature.
Colour
The colour is a lot similar to the double page spread and
is totally different to the front cover. The colour scheme
is very mature looking and reflects to an older age
audience.
The colour is quiet dark and has sparks of gold in the
background. However seen so the text and a selection
of the bottom is white this makes the dark seem less
dark and more airy and light.
The colour reflects the music genres that are featured in
the magazine; and also more specifically the music
featured in this issue of the magazine.
I really like how the colours are all similar in the pallet
and don’t clash- like the front cover. I genuinely like
how I feel when I look at this contents page it is very
warming and appealing to look at.
Layout
I really like how the layout is so even and not
overcrowded. The half image half text layout really
makes the magazine more easy to read and is less
overwhelming to the audience . The column layout of
both text and image makes the page seem more
equal to the audience and the look of it being tidy.
The header is not overly big and because it fits on
one half of the column makes it more appealing to
read.
Because of the really clean and calm layout this will
attract more people to read the contents page
instead of just flicking past it.
There was a lot that I got from the analysis of the Rock Sound magazine . There is a few features that I would include in my own magazine or
want to spin off into my own ideas. There are also a few things that I would not include in my magazine. A few things that I would not include is
anything like the front cover. It was way too overcrowded and the colours were too ranged and clashed too much. I didn’t find the layout of the
front cover of the magazine pleasurable or appealing and I think that if they could have arranged it better then something good could have come
from it.
However the contents page and double page spread had a bit more in it for me to take inspiration from. I really loved the dark/ wood looking
colours used on both the contents page and double page spread. I also loved how the contents page and double page spread were laid out. They
had a very laidback and easy atmosphere to them which was really nice to see on a magazine. Rock sound have really considered the reader and
audience in the magazine which is something that I want to do and also appreciate in a magazine. Finally I really like how Rock sound include a lot
of different aspects of music and the genres are wide so there is something to suit everyone.
Evaluation of analysis
Front cover
Masthead/ logo
Something that Q have done what the other magazines
haven’t is have a massive bold masthead. Instead they
just have the logo in the left hand corner. This is not
something I would do on my own magazine but I do
appreciate the difference and I think it looks good and
fits the style of Q.
Splash image
Like all magazines Q has a splash image on the front
cover. This splash image is a high quality medium
close up on the centre of the page. This makes the
reader feel like they are getting up and personal
with the featured artists and singers and also gives
them a sense of the style of the magazine.
The image also has a very creative side and has a
mouth open with flames and the band coming out
of it. This is almost telling the reader that there is a
lot in stock for them and gives them a feel for the
creativity and style of magazine. I really like how Q
have done this.
The front image being high quality and in the centre
makes the magazine look more professional and
like it is good quality. The centre splits up the page
more and can be used as a main focus point.
Secondary lead
Secondary lead is used on the magazine to be a ‘follow
up’ of the main featured artist. This means that there is
more in the magazine then just the main person on the
front cover. As there is secondary leads there is more
people going to buy it is as there is a more range of
people featured.
The secondary lead is in a bold font and is a lot bigger
then the standard text on the page so that it stands out
and people see it clearly. The secondary lead on this is
‘arctic monkeys’ ,‘Biffy Clyro’ and ‘Nicki Minaj’.
Flash
Flash is used on the top right hand corner of the
page. The flash is in a red circle and is in 2 colours
(which are both also bold)
The word ‘free’ is in a black font and is in a larger
font so it is the initial focus point then the rest of
the text in the circle is a smaller size and is white.
The point of this flash is to attract more people to
buy the magazine as the magazine is giving away
free merchandise which makes the audience feel
like they're getting something back; as if they are
getting more for their money and just makes them
want to buy it more.
Menu strip
There is a menu strip running down the right hand
side of the magazine. This is normally at the header
or the footer of the magazine. However Q have put
it down the side. This makes the page look more
equal and fits the layout better so it is in their
favour.
The menu strip is telling the audience what is going
to be in the magazine and gives the audience a feel
for what they are going to be buying. The menu
strip contains loads of different fonts and colours
which basically divides the different things. There is
‘secondary lead’ going on and some just general
promotion features as they are trying to get the
audience to buy the magazine.
Barcode
The reason for barcodes on magazines is that the
magazine industry requires the ability to distinguish
the various issues of a given year’s magazine.
Magazines all require barcodes as stores have an
Electronic sales system which allows them to see the
sales and this directs the stock and reorder system. It
is now just expected for a magazine to have a
barcode.
Colour
Q is known for the colour red used on their magazine.
The red is very bold and has become a house style for Q
as this is what they are known for. They use this for the
logo, kickers an d bold focus point text. The colour red is
accompanied by a carky green colour, black and white.
The use of minimal colours and how they are used
makes Q look very light and professional. The colours
don’t clash and work together very well. The colours on
this magazine are chosen really well and work extremely
well to create a pleasant vibe, which represents the
magazine style.
Date line
The date line is used is so that the readers know the
addition they're on and sales people can keep up with
the issue and what should be in stock.
Headline/Focus point
Along with all the other things that Q do differently to
other magazines they also have a tendency of putting
the headline at the bottom. Because it is not at the top
they have made it stand out more by having it as the
only text that is white, having it the most bold text and
also having it in the biggest size on the whole page.
The headline is ‘FOO FIGHTERS’ who are a band featured
on the splash image and who the magazine is mainly
about. The headline is very eye catching and is by far the
most focus point on the whole page. I really like how
catchy and clear the headline is and I think it looks more
effective at the bottom.
Quote/ Anchorage
There is a quote just above the headline. This quote
is very strong and is used as anchorage to the
magazine. Many people want to know what the
quote means, who it’s coming from, why they’re
saying and so on. The quotes physical appearance is
in the bold red colour, it is the second biggest size
font, it’s positioned just above the header so that
people will actually read it and used it; and is in all
caps. The physical appearance makes it stand out a
lot compared to everything else on the page and
even though it follows some of the same features as
the other text it is boosted with the position.
The quote itself is very hanging and makes the
audience want to know more (being the anchor)
“This will kill me” is a very strongly worded quote, it
is very short and catchy and it almost makes the
audience feel a bit uncomfortable as they don’t know
what's going on.
Kicker
The kicker on the menu strip is ‘143’ which is a statistic
kicker. This is basically a kick start to the text, it is in a
different font, colour and is a lot bigger. This is pretty
eye- catching and the fact that it is a number makes it
stand out more as people want to know what ‘143’ is
so they read the menu strip which is targeted to make
them want to buy it.
Cover line
Layout
The layout of this magazine front cover is very different
to the others. However it is the most professional and
clean looking one. This supports the style of music they
are featuring and advertising. I really like how
everything is equal on both sides and all fit around the
image which is very well displayed in the centre. The
layout makes the magazine look tidy and pleasurable to
read. The use of the colours and fonts all fit together
and are equal on both down the right hand side and
down the left hand side.
A cover line is present under the headline. It is in a
much lighter font then any other text on the
magazine. It draws a bit of attention to the band
and what they will be talking about in the magazine.
Double page spread
Splash image
There is an image on half of the double page spread.
This splits up the text and image equally and allows the
reader to have a full image which isn’t covered in
writing and which could be potentially used as a
poster. The image is scanned onto the paper so is very
high quality.
The image is in black and white which is very elegant
and makes the magazine look very professional and
stylish. I really like how classic the image looks in black
and white, and the kind of vibes that it gives off to the
audience.
The lighting on the image is highly exposed and very
professional, the image is lit in all the right places. This
has a falling effect on the whole magazine as it makes
both of the pages lighten and brighten up more.
The image is also a medium close up so it really makes
the reader feel a close connection to the artist,
because the image is so close you can really see all the
details of the photo and you really do feel a
connection. As there is a lack of clothing and the way
she is posing it makes a sense of her being ‘revealed’.
In this image the artist is wearing minimal clothing g
and the image stance and structure is very ‘revealing’.
This shows the type of character that the artist is and
also portrays a bit of their music style whilst also being
very mature for the audience it however does again
become a bit more personal for the audience as they
are really getting into the artists space.
There is no weird props or angles used at all on this
which makes the magazine seem more natural and up
front. The fact that there is nothing added makes the
magazine seem more mutual/ natural. This all fits into
the theme of it being professional and mature.
Finally the quality of the image is very good, the photo
is very much studio quality and is really really high
definition.
Title/ Header
There isn’t really a main title on this double
page spread. However there is a bit of a
title/ header in the top right hand corner
on the right page. This is basically just the
artists name so that the audience know
who they are reading about.
I really like how light it is and how it is not
taking the main focus away. The fonts
make it fit in nicely whilst still putting
across her style and it fits in with the
professional and clean style.
Logo
There is a logo in the bottom corner of the
right page. This is very small and under all
of the text. However it is still there and still
plays a part in the audience remembering
and knowing which magazine they are
reading. It just adds that little bit more
promotion and recognition.
Colour
The colour used is very basic and minimal.
There is 3 colours; black, white and Q’s
red. This makes the atmosphere very airy.
I feel like using colours like this makes the
page pop more; makes the page appear a
lot brighter. I think it is a good idea to do
this and I really like how the colours make
the atmosphere in the magazine come
together. It again is very professional
looking and makes the magazine seem
more mature.
There is a balance on the double page very equally, half is an image and the other half is
text. This is a very equal balance and makes the page appear more light and the equal
balance causes a lighter read and a more delightful time for the reader.
The contrast between the black and white image and the graphic red letter is a nice
contrast, you get the feeling of there being a bit of fun on the page whilst it is still really
professional and mature.
Balance and Contrast
Layout
The layout of this image is very simple yet effective.
Half of the page is text and the other half is an image.
This layout is good because it allows the audience to
have the best of both worlds and it means that it is
easier to follow. I really dig for this layout as it makes
a lot of sense and almost makes it more gratifying. I
really love how you get a whole A4 image with no
text or anything on. I think this layout is more
professional and more effective on the audience.
On the right hand side it is all text but how it is set
out with the graphic art included I think it looks good
and works well. It isn’t overcrowded it is nice, basic
and easy to follow.
I think that Q have really thought about their
audience and what looks professional when
designing and making the magazine, which I look for
most.
Text
The text that Q have used is very well
thought about.
The first major thing you see is the
graphic art, this is in a very big font
size in a sheer red. This means that the
reader can still read the rest of the
text. The letter is the initial of the
artist featured to the left. I really think
that the graphic art adds more volume
and shape to the magazine and makes
the two pages connect. This is very
much a house style for Q.
The next thing that stands out more is
the kicker of the text/ letter form. This
is used on the second paragraph down
on the ‘s’ this almost empathises the
letter and the paragraph that is about
to be read. I really like this as it makes
a bit more of a starting point and splits
things up more. The S is in a lot bigger
size and is also a lot more bold.
The text is all wrote in a simple font
which reflects into the simple text.
This is really good as it means that it
will be a fluent and easy read-
something I enjoy and find helpful in a
magazine.
Columns
Columns are used on the right hand side of the
page to organise the text. There are 3 lines of them
which are all the same length. All of the text starts
and finishes in the same place so it is all in line and
very organised . There is minimal leading in general
which means that the sentence lines are cut quiet
short and they fit together in line.
The composition is really nice on this double page spread. The magazine is very easy to read
and get around, you don’t get lost and it is not confusing for the reader. The magazine is made
up of one whole background image that spreads across the two pages with text overlaid over
the top. The double page spread is put together thoughtfully- thinking about the reader on
every angle which makes the magazine a lot more personal and pleasurable. The composition is

Composition
content pages
Heading
Finally a heading!
This heading is the Q logo with the title next to it
saying ‘contents’ it is very minimal but also is quiet
effective. The contrast between the colours of Q and
the actual heading is very nice to look at against the
red background. The heading is in a red banner at the
top which starts the page off.
Issue number
Also in the red banner at the top in a really light/ faint white font there is the
issue number. This is basically telling the audience what issue it is and keeps
them all organised.
Subheading
Under the heading there is a subheading which is in a
really thin red strip, this is so that it stands out. The
subheading says ‘features’ and it is in a small white
font. I don’t think this is clear to read and doesn’t
stand out as well as it could. I think that the red
highlight over it looks good with the red header at the
top.
Front page
There is a screen shot of the front page on the contents page. This allows the
reader to remember what the magazine is featuring and what is inside. This is
good on the contents page as it is showing the contents of the page in a visual
manner.
Promotion
Underneath the screenshot of the front cover there is a selection of magazine
samples. These are there to promote other issues of the magazine and also makes
the reader want to subscribe to the magazine. This is a really good way for the
magazine to promote other pages in this issue then other issues in the magazine.
Menu
There is a menu strip running down the side of the
central splash image. This is telling the audience what
is in the magazine and the page numbers it is found on.
The numbers then match up to images on the page
which show a little insider into the pages. The
numbering down the side is very bold and stands out
along with the bold headings which have a light
amount of text underneath.
Branding
There isn’t much branding used on
this content page other then the use
of logo on the heading and the small
logo at the bottom. This is very light
and isn’t in the readers face but it
also still promotes the magazine.
Colour
The colour on the contents page sticks with the house style theme running the
whole way through. Black, white and red. The same the whole way through the
red is used as feature and is used to highlight key points and focus/ important
information. This means that the red is only lightly used. It is a nice hint to the
black and white and keeps the classical, formal and established vibe.
Layout
The layout on the contents page is probably the most crowded on the whole of
the magazine. Which isn’t a bad thing. It makes the magazine look exciting and
the way it is more crowded doesn’t take the nice relaxing feeling away because
of the balance the magazine still looks professional and airy. I really like how the
contents page has a equal split between images and text. All the text is on the
left hand side of the splash image and the pictures are on right, this makes the
overcrowded page more balanced and clean.
Typography
The typography on this page is not at it’s strongest. I found the font used not as
easy to read as the ones used on the double page spread. I think the ones on
the double page spread were easier to read. This text has a really close leading
and seems to close together, the fonts are also really small as the images are
suppose to be the focus points. Even the heading could have been more bold
and stand out more.
Splash image
This splash image is different to the rest of the images featured in Q, it is
more of an action image which shows you the enthusiasm of the band and
what they are like. I really think this is an image to get the magazine off to a
kick, it is almost used as a plug to get the audience to want to see more.
The props used give of the vibes of what the band is like and the sort of
music they play whilst adding to the fact it is an action photo.
The clothing, facial expressions and body language make the photo more
relaxed and fun, this again changes the mood of the image for the audience.
Finally the positioning of the image is on point. It is directly in the centre,
this makes the image the focus point and is also funny as the artist is looking
at his face on the front cover which shows that Q really think about what
they are doing- adds a nice touch.
Evaluation of analysis
Q was one of my favourite magazines to analyse. I really like how well thought about it is and how much as an audience you feel
connected to it. There are a few things that i have took inspiration from and then there is a few things that i don’t like as much
about the magazine.
First of all the things I liked in the magazine. I took a lot of inspiration from the general style of the magazine. I really love how
simple and mature it is, it is very nice and tidy to look at and I really want my magazine to have the same tidy and fresh feeling to
it. Next I really like the colours used. There is a running colour scheme of the black white and red which is something that akes
the magazine- something I will look into adding to my magazine.
The images in the magazine are beautiful, they are very high quality and the fact they are in black and white just makes them
look so elegant, the coloured images pop with colour and I love how they warm up the whole page. Finally I love the house style
which runs through the magazine, I really desire to have a house style as it makes the magazine 10 times better.
Now for the things I didn’t like on the magazine. I really didn’t dig for the font. There was points where it just didn’t fit with the
style at all, there was other points when it just was unbearable to read and was too harsh on the eyes, however I will take this to
mind when I choose my fonts and make my magazine.

Circulation- 13,220 Readership- 48,914 Reader Profile http://www.slideshare.net/CrudgeRockSound/rock-sound-2012- media-pack And as we’re the most forward-thinking music title on the market, our brand expansions – the annual Rock Sound Riot and Exposure tours, one-off Rock Sound Presents shows, festival sponsorships, mobile app and a burgeoning video production unit – are embedded into all aspects of our audience’s lives. However they consume music and all its related offshoots, we’re there first. In a hugely competitive market, Rock Sound has thrived for over 14 years because we provide exactly what music fans want: immediate and meaningful access to the best new bands and the biggest names on the scene alike. We were first to cover the likes of Paramour, Bring Me The Horizon, My Chemical Romance and hundreds more, and we’ve cemented our reputation on creating rather than following trends. Every issue of the magazine comes with a free CD curated by Rock Sound staff to showcase the great new music featured in the issue. As the UK’s leading independent rock title, Rock Sound has built up an unparalleled level of trust and credibility among our audience. Mission statement https://yorkcollege.blackboard.com/bbcswebdav/

  • 9. Splash image BIG bold Masthead (House style) Selling line Headline/ Anchorage Plug Kicker The selling line is used to sell the magazine to the reader. The selling line tends to be a competition or free features that you would benefit from if you bought the magazine. Kerrang tend to selling lines at the top of all of their magazines to get the reader to buy it. It is a good source of promotion. Kerrang put the selling line in bold font and use the feature colour (yellow) to make it stand out. Kerrang use a very big and bold masthead. This stands out and is the feature of the front cover. Kerrang use their ‘Logo’ as the title on every cover so that it is house style and people remember it. It works with the colour scheme and becomes the biggest and first focus on the magazine front cover. The catchy masthead will increase the popularity of the magazine. Like most magazines Kerrang have a feature article photo. This photo is the main photo on the magazine cover. Kerrang tend to use a lot of medium close up shots. This makes the audience feel up and close with the celebrity and feel as if they are about to indulge in their personal life. Kerrang uses studio lighting and enhance colours so that the photo is catchy, clear and bright. They tend to position the photo to the right hand side so their is more room to work with on the left. Kerrang tries to make the images simple yet exciting to encourage the reader to buy the magazine. Crowdedness Colour Kerrang use the basic black and white simple colouring to keep it basic but then use a feature colour, this additional colour adds emotion to the magazine and runs through the whole magazine. The colour tends to create a mood or style that connotes the style and atmosphere of the music, this matches the music to give the audience a sense of the theme, music and atmosphere- making them feel involved and them to buy it. The colour also makes the magazine seem more light and airy. Kerrang use Headline and anchorage as a pull factor. The use of headline and anchorage on Kerrang is bold and a focus point. They use big bold headings with catchy story titles so that the audience feels more attracted to the magazine. Kerrang highlight some of the text with the feature colour so the words ‘Hayley’ and ‘your’ is in highlight so they stand out more. These words are personal and make the reader feel like their going to have a connection with the person on the front cover. They also use quotes from sentences that hold a bit of tension to make the reader want to read more, they are often cliff- hanger quotes so make the audience want to find out more. Kerrang front covers have a tendency of being busy and over crowded, (this one isn’t so bad)They like to add a lot of features and promotion lines so that the audience feels like the magazine is full of loads of different and interesting things. Kerrang are trying to widen their audience by adding more variety and more things to their magazine. This makes their audience stats higher. Kerrang use feature bands/ musicians every week but still like to add different varieties and bands to widen the range and audience. Kerrang have used a plug at the bottom of the cover. The plug is what is free with the magazine (competitions, discounts, tickets, posters) This makes the reader feel like they are getting something back from buying the magazine and that they are going to get something in return for it. This can often be used as an attraction to the magazine. The kicker used on the Kerrang front cover is in bold writing to break up the page and to make it stand out quiet a lot. This is something that the reader might read first so it is very catchy and stands out. ‘Excess all areas’ gives the feeling that the reader is going to get personal with the entertainer so they will buy it as they feel like they are getting exclusive information. This is good for super fans or just typical music readers.
  • 10. Menu strip Flash Date line Barcode Cover lineCover line Kerrang like to include a lot of cover lines as they attract more readers. The feature band/ singer on the front of the cover is what attracts the more ‘super fans’ but for more everyday readers and people who read magazines more the cover lines are good for attracting them. The cover lines tend to be in bold or a little photo of them so that they still manage to grab the readers attention but they don’t take the main focus off the splash image and feature. Cover lines are a really good way of keeping regular readers happy as they feature more then just the feature act. Flash is good promotion. It is a catchy word that is instant and tends to have more promotion for the magazine continuing after it. So this could be like ‘also free competitions to enter’ the word ‘also’ is the flash and the rest is the promotion. On this example the flash is ‘plus’ which is bold, in the same font as the logo and the feature colour so it really stands out. The promotion is then the rest of the context that is going to be in the magazine. This flash is really good as it is giving the reader a taste for the magazine so they get more upbeat about it and is almost a suspense for what is going to happen which is going to drive the audience to buy it. This shows that Kerrang are showing loads of acts to please more of the audience and its making sure that there is going to be something for everyone in it. Kerrang like to include a lot of cover lines as they attract more readers. Barcodes a self explanatory for the term of ‘you use them to pay for them’ but here’s more information. The reason for barcodes on magazines is that the magazine industry requires the ability to distinguish the various issues of a given year’s magazine. Magazines all require barcodes as stores have an Electronic sales system which allows them to see the sales and this directs the stock and reorder system. It is now just expected for a magazine to have a barcode. The date line again is very self explanatory and doesn't need much explaining. But again it is so that the readers know the addition they're on and sales people can keep up with the issue and what should be in stock. The menu strip is what is going to be in the magazine. It is a taster/ sample of what to expect when you buy it. On Kerrang it is a run down of the bands, singers that are going to be featured in the magazine. This is at the bottom after you have seen the splash image and all of the cover lines this is the basic run down of what else to expect music wise. All of the other aspects (competitions, posters) are Flash features and cover lines so the menu is the menu of music.
  • 12. Props In this photo the props used are very fun, senseless and a focus point. This attracts the audience to want to look at the band and read the article. It gives of fun vibes for the band and almost excites the reader to want to find out more, in a bizarre way its almost a mystery prop and makes the reader to want to find out more. Lighting The lighting used in the photo is key lighting which is focused on the floor. This creates the foreground to be really light and the background to be darker. This adds a bit of a dingy dark mood to the photo. The atmosphere the light creates reflects and meets with the props as the lighter part is the bunny prop with carrot and the rest of I is darker which is saying the band is quiet mysterious. Colour The colour used on the double page is very basic (black and white) then with hints and feature points of red. The red creates the main focus so is used on the title, quote, letter form at the start of the sentence, and some promotion features. Something Kerrang does is they mix up the feature colour on each magazine to fit the featured band and their style so the red can mean fierce, love, pain etc.. so the use of the feature colour will impact on how the reader feels when first looking at the band and their mood. This is something that Kerrang is known for and is their house style so them using this as a focus colour for important information can be very beneficial. Bold title Kerrang use a really catchy title to attract the reader attention. They use bold fonts and colours (often the feature colour) The bold title used often sets the page off. It brings emotion and attitude to the page. Because of catchy title the article is more likely to be read so Kerrang really go all out with the focus of the title. Credits Credits are really simple and basically just tell the audience who did certain parts of the work so Kerrang displayed them in a small font under the header so that they don’t become a focus point or a main point but they’re still there for the reader to get credits. Header The header basically tells the audience what is going to be in the article as a bit of a preview to what they're about to read. It is used to pull the audience into the article and almost fill them with adrenaline to want to read more. Kerrang have placed this under the title so the reader reads this directly after the catch title so that they read the whole article. It almost finishes the draw in of the reader so it is really powerful and direct so that it really makes them want to read it. Promotion for other things Kerrang uses promotion a lot. They use promotion on the double page spread at the right hand side on the bottom of the page. This is used to make the reader want to keep reading this issue and then buy other issues after this. The use of promotion in Kerrang is low key but bold. They don't add it everywhere; but when they do add it they use catchy phases and bold titles and also the use of a feature colour- this means it breaks down the page and stands out more.
  • 13. Half a page scanned photo There is a whole image covering the left side of the page. It is scanned onto the page, the image is a long shot of the band, the fact it is a long shot indicates the band. You can really get to see the whole band, this allows the reader to get to see a full view of the band before having to read it. The fact there is an equal balance also becomes a bit of an eye game for the reader, they think that the photo is more then the text so they are more interested in reading. The full page image makes the reader want to read the article as it is attracting them towards the article. The photo used on half the page is very active and happy, this gives the reader a feel for the music and the genre. Balance and contrast On the Kerrang double page spread there is an equal balance between text and image. The balance between a full page image and a full page of text is a very direct balance, this eases the thought of too much text and creates a really chilled and informal atmosphere to the article. I think it is really organised looking and takes the busy stressful theme off the front cover, it is airy and allows a pleasurable read. The right hand text page is also divided quiet well, there is a lot of text on the right page which could potentially look over crowded but the split up of promotion bands and the use of big banner headings makes it more broken down and simple to read. Quote There is a quote used across the centre of the double page spread. This quote is practically in the centre of the double pages which naturally becomes eye caching and a focus point to the audience. The use of the quote splits up the text and image very directly which I think is a good split between them both. The quote is also in capital letters and is in the colours of the theme. This makes it more eye-catching and more of an attraction to the audience. The font is very bold and the depth of it adds to the feeling of the article. Text For the actual article text the font is really easy and basic. This makes the reading in itself more relaxed and it is good for all reading abilities as it is complex and easy. Again this text style makes the magazine more airy and calm on the inside. It also drives the attention onto the bold crazy fonts which are used in headings and subheadings. This means there can be more points of focus instead of just having the text all the same colour and same font. The text that is I a different font or colour then comes becomes more flash to the audience. The colours of text fit the colour scheme (maybe even set the colour scheme). The reader will automatically see the bright colour, bold font and catchy title so they will want to read on. Letter form The letter form is the starting letter of the article the ‘R’ Kerrang have made it bold but smooth. They used the feature colour to grab the attention and fit it with the theme. Kerrang also used letter for in red at the start of every new column so the larger letter exaggerates the start of the article and keeps the focus to the point. As for the start of the red sentences this is a mini preview for what the audience is about to read and creates a break up between parts of the article. Columns The use of columns in this double page spread are key because if not then there would be a over crowded issue which would go against the airy feelings that are going on. In the columns are paragraphs which all are quiet short. This layout is very smooth but has a good effect visually on the reader. I really like how the columns in this article break up the text and make it really easy and complex to read. Minimal leading Minimal leading is the gap and structure of the text. Kerrang keep the text all in line and column for the structure. All of the sentences tend to end in line with each other and then there tends to be the odd lines that is longer then the rest of them. The text looks really tidy and well structured which really adds to the tidy and airy atmosphere that Kerrang tries to create throughout the magazine.
  • 15. Heading The heading of the page is very small for the heading. It is in the feature colour and the Kerrang house style font- because of this it stands out well so the sizing doesn’t really effect it. The heading had the issue number and cover date under it which is a good way for the reader to keep up to date and for any collectors to keep up to data also. Editor information Subheading The subheading is a lot bigger then the actual heading, it again uses the house style font, feature colour and is bold. This heading is basically creating a split in the page for the information on ‘this week’ the heading is in a black banner which also breaks up the page more. The editor information is giving the editors opinion and features them and their information. This is on the contents page so that it doesn't take up loads of room and is just nicely fitted into the side of the contents page. It is included so that the editor gets credit and has some time to talk about whatever they desire (in relevance) Splash image There is a splash image used on the contents page as well as the front cover as it breaks up the page and often attracts the reader to take notice in the context page as there is an action photo which is eye-catching and what the reader is more likely to see and want to take interest in then just text. Magazine samples The contents page tends to be one of the first pages that is in the magazine as soon as you open the cover its there. This is then used to show the reader what they are about to indulge into. The magazine samples are good for the audience to see the layout and what the features are. Tag line This tag line is very catchy and slides together to make a very bold statement . This intrigues the reader as the four bold words sort of hit the reader to feel them on a personal level and they want to read on. Typography The typography is the way the text is formatted and laid out. So the typography for the contents page for Kerrang is bold and stands out. It follows the house style and is very eye catchy. This means that the reader feels attracted to the contents page more. The spacing in-between the text is quiet a lot (meaning the words are not bunched together) Branding Kerrang always use their ‘logo’ as the heading or format when they include the word ‘Kerrang’ this means that that the audience becomes more aware of it and it automatically becomes a logo that you remember. Promotion/ Plug Even on the inside of the magazine, Kerrang continues to use plugs to get the audience to feel like they have value to the magazine. This is also promotion as the audience feel more connected and feel like they are getting something back from the magazine so they keep buying and keep reading the magazine. I think that Kerrang likes assuring that they are keeping the audience anticipated and like they have a high value. Monthly subscriptions Kerrang have a monthly subscription and use a lot of promotion, catchy titles and persuasive language so that people are more likely to buy the magazine subscription. The use of the word ‘just’ makes the audience feel more like they can justify the price. The use of exclamation mark excites the reader and the colour red is stern and makes the reader feel more upbeat and attracted to the plug so they will be more likely to look into it and probably buy it.
  • 16. Evaluation of analysis I have learnt a lot from the study of Kerrang and I have taken a lot of inspiration into how they lay out and style their work. I want my magazine to have some colour coding like Kerrang, I think I will take the black and white inspiration with the feature colour running along through the magazine as this is really catchy and draws a lot of attention to the reader. I want my website to have an airy feel running through it like Kerrang as I really like how relaxing and light it feels when reading it, it is full of information and is a good magazine but it is not overwhelming which as a reader i really appreciate, I think that Kerrang make the magazine feel gentle so it isn’t too intense which I hope will pass through onto my work. I also love how personal Kerrang make their audience feel when they read the magazine so I want to add things like: These will make the reader feel a lot more connected and valued which should hopefully encourage them to buy the magazine more and will just make the magazine a lot better as a read. Kerrang have added so many aspects to the magazine to make it a better read for their audience and I really like how audience aware they are, they go to large extents to please their audience; somehow managing to satisfy a wide group of people with their magazine which if you look at their 421,000 readership figure, you would understand why. I also really like how Kerrang have used the double page spread in a simple way by dedicating half to an image then the other half to text, they then split up this text by using heavier fonts and colours for starting words and lines so that it breaks up the columns more. -Medium close up photos -Promotion and plugs -Interviews -Previews -Rhetorical question headings

  • 19. Flash banner Splash image Selling line Rock sound have used a selling line at the top of the page which is telling the audience what music is included in the magazine. The selling line states what is going to be in the magazine and begins to pull the correct audience to the magazine. They have put it in blue and it is quiet bold on the page so stands out quiet a lot, this should hopefully encourage sales. Masthead Rock sound use their logo as the masthead so that people know the logo and become aware of this, this means a lot of people will end up knowing the magazine company and will potentially get them more purchases and more of an audience. Their logo is pretty simple and automatically tells you about the style of magazine as the logo is bold, catchy; and quiet edgy so this will attract the right audience. Covering over the logo is a flash banner This flash banner says ‘free stickers and posters’ which is automatic promotion, it is on the masthead so that people see it straight away and automatically feel more pressured to buy it to get the free merchandise. There are more flash banners used throughout the cover of the magazine. They are in a yellow font or highlight so that they stand out. They are very visible, the text in the yellow highlight is a bold black font in capital letters which adds to the catchiness. These flash banners are attracting more people to buy the magazine as they are reading ‘FREE’ everywhere or ‘PLUS’ which is making the audience feel like they are getting a lot in the magazine and they will miss out if they don’t buy it. Secondary lead There is a little bit of secondary lead going on. I think that rock sound are trying to make the ‘selling line’ fit more as they include different genres in the secondary lead. This means that they are thinking about their audience; however I also feel like they are trying to cover too many things. They have used the secondary lead in a good way by making it bold and using anchorage underneath so that people are drawn into the band name then the story line that they are going to cover, this means that more people will read the article if the encourage is strong and catchy enough. Headline The headline used is the featured artists name across the image. The headline is in a large font, in caps, bold font and in the potential feature colour (blue) The headline is the first thing that you see on the magazine as it is so bold and catchy. This is good as its something that draws the audience to the magazine before they read everything else on the front cover so this is the thing which drives the magazine to the audience before they read anything else. I think that Rock sound have managed to make the headline stand out well. Like a lot of magazines the splash image on the front cover is a medium close up shot of the feature artist. When the audience first see this they feel like they are about to come up close and personal with the artist and get behind the scenes with them. For the visual side for the audience to be able to see the face of the artist tends to get them more excited and then they want to buy the magazine to read it. The image on the front of this page is very basic and simple, this means that it is a good easy front cover which balances out the crowded text with the image. Plug This makes the reader feel like they are getting something back from buying the magazine and that they are going to get something in return for it. This can often be used as an attraction to the magazine. Some audience members buy the magazine for the plugs so this is good to get extra audience.
  • 20. Barcode The reason for barcodes on magazines is that the magazine industry requires the ability to distinguish the various issues of a given year’s magazine. Date line Layout Menu strip Colour Typography Kicker The colour used on the front cover of Rock sound is very heavy and quiet overboard. They don’t really have a colour scheme going on or a house style. The main colour seems to be blue which is highlighted a lot so it is not much of a catchy eye colour so they added yellow and pink which work well as a highlight and focus colour but they then end up taking the blue away. I think the blue would be better if it was minimal and just used with a house style colour theme as the things in blue are worthy of highlighting. The fonts used are very ‘comic sans’ like which is not a bad thing for the general text. What Rock sound have done is they have managed to use the different fonts to create the division between the different types of text. The most important text lines are bold, heavy looking and a different font which is a really efficient way to attract the reader without them really knowing it. The gaps between the text are not too close so it creates more of a uncrowned vibe but also keeps the work crisp and tidy. The kickers used are in bolder writing and stand out to the normal text. This is so that the reader automatically looks there and it catches their attention to the magazine. Rock sound has tried to make it so that the kicker stands out my font but because there is too much font and coloring going on so it doesn’t stand out as well if there was a color scheme and less on the page. The menu strip is at the bottom of the magazine and it basically informs the reader what is going to be in the magazine. It almost becomes a bit of a taster and a insight into the magazine. It works along side the selling line. The selling line sells the top thing or it shows you the genre so the menu strip backs this up and shows the audience what they are really going to get from the magazine and what is in it. The menu strip on Rock sound is very simple and gets the job done. The layout is a very standard looking music magazine. It is very loud and full of headlines. Rock sound have use quiet a symmetrical layout this basically is saying that the magazine is balanced. Everything is in line with each other. Masthead, headline and menu strip are all in line. Secondary leads and kickers are in line on either side to the magazine. And plugs and flash banners on the bottom are inline. I think Rock sound have a good layout going on and it makes the magazine look full of information and exciting things whilst still being breathable and manageable.
  • 22. Heading The heading on the double page spread is very bold and stands out. The font is bold but sophisticated which sets the atmosphere of the article they are about to read. The heading doesn’t have a header which basically means that there is no introduction in the start of the magazine to ease the reader into it. Quote There is a quote used on the bottom of the page which is from one of the band members. This text is in a heavy font of white which stands out on the dark image. It is the same font as the heading and the same size which balances out the page whilst making the quote more of a focus point for the audience. The good thing about the quote is the personal feel that the reader gets and you can make it really catchy and grab the attention of the reader straight away. Anchorage Anchorage is used under the heading. ‘The bitter end’ which is telling the audience a bit more on what they are about to read. It is a smaller size and lighter font so it isn’t used as a focus point but it is there and can almost make the audience want to read the article to find out what the ‘end ‘ is what is going to end and why it is bitter. So this small catchy sentences creates a whole new meaning and a million questions.Branding/ promotion There is a small amount of branding and promotion just under the heading and anchorage. This is the bands album cover. This is rightfully on there as the audience might not really know the band but they like the sound of them so this allows them to see the latest album and it also just makes more awareness of the band and gives them a bit of promotion to advertise their new album and hopefully it will increase the sales. Text The text on this double page spread is very short and simple. It is a light read and very easy to take in which is sometimes good on a double page spread especially when the photo is the main point of it. The text is in two separate boxes which are across from each other which balances out the page. The text layout itself is very nice and pleasurable to read. The text is in a paragraph format and all of the lines end in line with each other. When a new topic, theme or aspect of the text is made there is a new line created so it is easy for the audience to keep up with the text change. There is also minimal leading and gaps so this means that it is nice and close for a more fluent read. The font is basic and is in white so that it is easy on the eyes but still shows up on the dark image. Colour The colour has changed a lot from the front cover. The magazine now has a more mature feel to it and it has a bit more of a theme and house style. This is a very dark page with some lighting patches which represents the type of music that is trying to be put across. The white text on the dark background is minimal but effective as it looks fresh, crisp and tidy which is nice to the eyes of the reader. Credits Credits are used at the end of the text to give appreciation to the people that were featured there is also links to their social media, iTunes and things like that for promotion the credits basically show the creators behind the magazine (page) and what their importance is. Balance and contrast The balance on the double page spread is very equal. The pages are very balanced with the text and the colours. The contrast is also balances quiet well. There is a contrast in the lighting from the front of the page to the end of the other page. The colours are contrasted together quiet well and there is a nice balance between the colours in the photo and the colours, font and heaviness of the text. All of these bounce off each other and make the magazine page look more alive and better to look at.
  • 23. Composition The composition is really nice on this double page spread. The magazine is very easy to read and get around, you don’t get lost and it is not confusing for the reader. The magazine is made up of one whole background image that spreads across the two pages with text overlaid over the top. The double page spread is put together thoughtfuly- thinking about the reader on every angle which makes the magazine a lot more personal and pleasurable. Photo The photo is a very important part of the double page spread. It brings the whole page together and is the main aspect. The photo is very ‘poster’ like in the aspect it takes over the whole two pages. It takes up the whole background for the two pages, the one photo has been made to fit across both of the pages without looking disproportioned and stretched. Because it covers the whole background there is no white borders or white space which takes the ‘airy’ feel away so it is more one to one with the band and they are the focus. The photo is a medium long shot so also gives of a personal feeling to the audience. The photo looks semi staged but has the vibes of the band in the background so you really get a sense of the band before even reading it. As the image is such good quality it would suggest that it was scanned onto the page to give it a high detailed quality. Lighting The lighting on the double page spread is not highly exposed. It is quiet a dark image which sets a bit of an edgy and off mood atmosphere, this allows the reader to automatically sense the band before they read anything about them. The wall that the bad is stood against is the most lit part of the whole image and there shadows are on the wall which adds more detail to the image and creates more emotion on the image. Props There is not many props used in the image shot apart from a chair which someone is sat on. The chair is very classic and simple. You don’t really notice it as it is not a focus point or feature. The lack of props shows the main focus is on the band and shows their simplicity; and really brings out more of their character. Clothing The clothing that the band is wearing is very dark and similar which shows the charisma of the band and you get first judgements from their wavy garments. I think that the dark colours blend well with the lighting and dark situation as their faces become more sharp and glowy. You get a lot from someone's clothing so them being themselves is a very good feature to have. Angle The photo is taken on slight diagonal angle, as the band members are stood in a line and to get all of their bodies in and grasp the whole feature and look they have to take it on a slight angle. This angle adds more of a dimension to the image and makes it look more framed and structured. Set The set that this photo was taken in looks like a dark attic sort of environment. It is a very closed space and a bit grunge like. The closeness of the environment makes the audience feel more closed in and its a lot more personal. I like how the clothing, lighting and set all tie in together to create one mood which supports the genre and atmosphere of the music.
  • 25. Heading The heading for the contents page is moderately small for a heading but the way they have laid it out in the column and the fact it is bigger then the subheadings and text mean s that it still stands out. It is very toned down and fits in with everything else colour and font wise and it is satisfying to look at how it fits in well with the proportion of the rest of the page. Date and issue number The date and issue number is displayed in a very basic font under the heading. This allows the reader to identify what issue they are reading and they can keep up with the issues. This is displayed well under the heading and it is minimal but adds a nice touch to the magazine. Subheadings The main subheading is in white and the same bold white font as all the other subheadings but it also has a baby blue highlight over it which makes it stand out above the rest of them. This is a small added feature but it really makes the page pop a bit more and it breaks up the heading and the text which is good. The other headings on the page are a little bit bigger then the main subheading but they are the same font and colour. These are really simple and work well with the breaking down of the page into sub categories. Numbering There is numbering down the side of the subheadings. These numbers identify the page that the main feature is on. The numbers are in a light blue and are very faint so they don’t stand out and take the main focus away from the everything else. This again is showing Rock Sound considering their audience. Branding There is no type of branding on the contents page. The only semi branding would be the heading but even that is not the logo. This makes the magazine seem less ‘logo’ ‘branding’ in your face so it is very minimal and they simply have the heading as the magazine title. Splash image There is a splash image used on the whole of the page but the main part (the feature singer) is on the right hand side so that the left hand side can be dedicated fully to text. This means that the page is well divided and you get the best of both worlds. The image is a medium close up so that the audience feel a sense of closeness and personal connection to the artist. The artist also is pulling a non serious face and is being their selves so this makes the audience feel friendly and a friend like connection to the artist and the magazine. The photo is very high quality and is nice and bright so it is a really positive vibe going on. Typography The text on this double page spread is very causal and laid back so it is really relaxing and easy to read. All of the headings are in a heavier font so they stand out and they are a slightly bigger size, the normal text is also white and is nice short and catchy for a contents page. I really like how the style of text reflects the simplicity of the magazine and the text content itself. Quote There is a quote in the right hand corner under the splash image. This quote is the only thing on the page that stands out, which makes it a focus point on the contents page. This quote is in a different font- it is more cartoon like and bendy. It is also in a different colour from the rest of the text which is black (but it still fits in. The quote itself is a bit of a pulling feature.
  • 26. Colour The colour is a lot similar to the double page spread and is totally different to the front cover. The colour scheme is very mature looking and reflects to an older age audience. The colour is quiet dark and has sparks of gold in the background. However seen so the text and a selection of the bottom is white this makes the dark seem less dark and more airy and light. The colour reflects the music genres that are featured in the magazine; and also more specifically the music featured in this issue of the magazine. I really like how the colours are all similar in the pallet and don’t clash- like the front cover. I genuinely like how I feel when I look at this contents page it is very warming and appealing to look at. Layout I really like how the layout is so even and not overcrowded. The half image half text layout really makes the magazine more easy to read and is less overwhelming to the audience . The column layout of both text and image makes the page seem more equal to the audience and the look of it being tidy. The header is not overly big and because it fits on one half of the column makes it more appealing to read. Because of the really clean and calm layout this will attract more people to read the contents page instead of just flicking past it.
  • 27. There was a lot that I got from the analysis of the Rock Sound magazine . There is a few features that I would include in my own magazine or want to spin off into my own ideas. There are also a few things that I would not include in my magazine. A few things that I would not include is anything like the front cover. It was way too overcrowded and the colours were too ranged and clashed too much. I didn’t find the layout of the front cover of the magazine pleasurable or appealing and I think that if they could have arranged it better then something good could have come from it. However the contents page and double page spread had a bit more in it for me to take inspiration from. I really loved the dark/ wood looking colours used on both the contents page and double page spread. I also loved how the contents page and double page spread were laid out. They had a very laidback and easy atmosphere to them which was really nice to see on a magazine. Rock sound have really considered the reader and audience in the magazine which is something that I want to do and also appreciate in a magazine. Finally I really like how Rock sound include a lot of different aspects of music and the genres are wide so there is something to suit everyone. Evaluation of analysis

  • 30. Masthead/ logo Something that Q have done what the other magazines haven’t is have a massive bold masthead. Instead they just have the logo in the left hand corner. This is not something I would do on my own magazine but I do appreciate the difference and I think it looks good and fits the style of Q. Splash image Like all magazines Q has a splash image on the front cover. This splash image is a high quality medium close up on the centre of the page. This makes the reader feel like they are getting up and personal with the featured artists and singers and also gives them a sense of the style of the magazine. The image also has a very creative side and has a mouth open with flames and the band coming out of it. This is almost telling the reader that there is a lot in stock for them and gives them a feel for the creativity and style of magazine. I really like how Q have done this. The front image being high quality and in the centre makes the magazine look more professional and like it is good quality. The centre splits up the page more and can be used as a main focus point. Secondary lead Secondary lead is used on the magazine to be a ‘follow up’ of the main featured artist. This means that there is more in the magazine then just the main person on the front cover. As there is secondary leads there is more people going to buy it is as there is a more range of people featured. The secondary lead is in a bold font and is a lot bigger then the standard text on the page so that it stands out and people see it clearly. The secondary lead on this is ‘arctic monkeys’ ,‘Biffy Clyro’ and ‘Nicki Minaj’. Flash Flash is used on the top right hand corner of the page. The flash is in a red circle and is in 2 colours (which are both also bold) The word ‘free’ is in a black font and is in a larger font so it is the initial focus point then the rest of the text in the circle is a smaller size and is white. The point of this flash is to attract more people to buy the magazine as the magazine is giving away free merchandise which makes the audience feel like they're getting something back; as if they are getting more for their money and just makes them want to buy it more. Menu strip There is a menu strip running down the right hand side of the magazine. This is normally at the header or the footer of the magazine. However Q have put it down the side. This makes the page look more equal and fits the layout better so it is in their favour. The menu strip is telling the audience what is going to be in the magazine and gives the audience a feel for what they are going to be buying. The menu strip contains loads of different fonts and colours which basically divides the different things. There is ‘secondary lead’ going on and some just general promotion features as they are trying to get the audience to buy the magazine. Barcode The reason for barcodes on magazines is that the magazine industry requires the ability to distinguish the various issues of a given year’s magazine. Magazines all require barcodes as stores have an Electronic sales system which allows them to see the sales and this directs the stock and reorder system. It is now just expected for a magazine to have a barcode.
  • 31. Colour Q is known for the colour red used on their magazine. The red is very bold and has become a house style for Q as this is what they are known for. They use this for the logo, kickers an d bold focus point text. The colour red is accompanied by a carky green colour, black and white. The use of minimal colours and how they are used makes Q look very light and professional. The colours don’t clash and work together very well. The colours on this magazine are chosen really well and work extremely well to create a pleasant vibe, which represents the magazine style. Date line The date line is used is so that the readers know the addition they're on and sales people can keep up with the issue and what should be in stock. Headline/Focus point Along with all the other things that Q do differently to other magazines they also have a tendency of putting the headline at the bottom. Because it is not at the top they have made it stand out more by having it as the only text that is white, having it the most bold text and also having it in the biggest size on the whole page. The headline is ‘FOO FIGHTERS’ who are a band featured on the splash image and who the magazine is mainly about. The headline is very eye catching and is by far the most focus point on the whole page. I really like how catchy and clear the headline is and I think it looks more effective at the bottom. Quote/ Anchorage There is a quote just above the headline. This quote is very strong and is used as anchorage to the magazine. Many people want to know what the quote means, who it’s coming from, why they’re saying and so on. The quotes physical appearance is in the bold red colour, it is the second biggest size font, it’s positioned just above the header so that people will actually read it and used it; and is in all caps. The physical appearance makes it stand out a lot compared to everything else on the page and even though it follows some of the same features as the other text it is boosted with the position. The quote itself is very hanging and makes the audience want to know more (being the anchor) “This will kill me” is a very strongly worded quote, it is very short and catchy and it almost makes the audience feel a bit uncomfortable as they don’t know what's going on. Kicker The kicker on the menu strip is ‘143’ which is a statistic kicker. This is basically a kick start to the text, it is in a different font, colour and is a lot bigger. This is pretty eye- catching and the fact that it is a number makes it stand out more as people want to know what ‘143’ is so they read the menu strip which is targeted to make them want to buy it. Cover line Layout The layout of this magazine front cover is very different to the others. However it is the most professional and clean looking one. This supports the style of music they are featuring and advertising. I really like how everything is equal on both sides and all fit around the image which is very well displayed in the centre. The layout makes the magazine look tidy and pleasurable to read. The use of the colours and fonts all fit together and are equal on both down the right hand side and down the left hand side. A cover line is present under the headline. It is in a much lighter font then any other text on the magazine. It draws a bit of attention to the band and what they will be talking about in the magazine.
  • 33. Splash image There is an image on half of the double page spread. This splits up the text and image equally and allows the reader to have a full image which isn’t covered in writing and which could be potentially used as a poster. The image is scanned onto the paper so is very high quality. The image is in black and white which is very elegant and makes the magazine look very professional and stylish. I really like how classic the image looks in black and white, and the kind of vibes that it gives off to the audience. The lighting on the image is highly exposed and very professional, the image is lit in all the right places. This has a falling effect on the whole magazine as it makes both of the pages lighten and brighten up more. The image is also a medium close up so it really makes the reader feel a close connection to the artist, because the image is so close you can really see all the details of the photo and you really do feel a connection. As there is a lack of clothing and the way she is posing it makes a sense of her being ‘revealed’. In this image the artist is wearing minimal clothing g and the image stance and structure is very ‘revealing’. This shows the type of character that the artist is and also portrays a bit of their music style whilst also being very mature for the audience it however does again become a bit more personal for the audience as they are really getting into the artists space. There is no weird props or angles used at all on this which makes the magazine seem more natural and up front. The fact that there is nothing added makes the magazine seem more mutual/ natural. This all fits into the theme of it being professional and mature. Finally the quality of the image is very good, the photo is very much studio quality and is really really high definition. Title/ Header There isn’t really a main title on this double page spread. However there is a bit of a title/ header in the top right hand corner on the right page. This is basically just the artists name so that the audience know who they are reading about. I really like how light it is and how it is not taking the main focus away. The fonts make it fit in nicely whilst still putting across her style and it fits in with the professional and clean style. Logo There is a logo in the bottom corner of the right page. This is very small and under all of the text. However it is still there and still plays a part in the audience remembering and knowing which magazine they are reading. It just adds that little bit more promotion and recognition. Colour The colour used is very basic and minimal. There is 3 colours; black, white and Q’s red. This makes the atmosphere very airy. I feel like using colours like this makes the page pop more; makes the page appear a lot brighter. I think it is a good idea to do this and I really like how the colours make the atmosphere in the magazine come together. It again is very professional looking and makes the magazine seem more mature. There is a balance on the double page very equally, half is an image and the other half is text. This is a very equal balance and makes the page appear more light and the equal balance causes a lighter read and a more delightful time for the reader. The contrast between the black and white image and the graphic red letter is a nice contrast, you get the feeling of there being a bit of fun on the page whilst it is still really professional and mature. • 34. Layout The layout of this image is very simple yet effective. Half of the page is text and the other half is an image. This layout is good because it allows the audience to have the best of both worlds and it means that it is easier to follow. I really dig for this layout as it makes a lot of sense and almost makes it more gratifying. I really love how you get a whole A4 image with no text or anything on. I think this layout is more professional and more effective on the audience. On the right hand side it is all text but how it is set out with the graphic art included I think it looks good and works well. It isn’t overcrowded it is nice, basic and easy to follow. I think that Q have really thought about their audience and what looks professional when designing and making the magazine, which I look for most. Text The text that Q have used is very well thought about. The first major thing you see is the graphic art, this is in a very big font size in a sheer red. This means that the reader can still read the rest of the text. The letter is the initial of the artist featured to the left. I really think that the graphic art adds more volume and shape to the magazine and makes the two pages connect. This is very much a house style for Q. The next thing that stands out more is the kicker of the text/ letter form. This is used on the second paragraph down on the ‘s’ this almost empathises the letter and the paragraph that is about to be read. I really like this as it makes a bit more of a starting point and splits things up more. The S is in a lot bigger size and is also a lot more bold. The text is all wrote in a simple font which reflects into the simple text. This is really good as it means that it will be a fluent and easy read- something I enjoy and find helpful in a magazine. Columns Columns are used on the right hand side of the page to organise the text. There are 3 lines of them which are all the same length. All of the text starts and finishes in the same place so it is all in line and very organised . There is minimal leading in general which means that the sentence lines are cut quiet short and they fit together in line. The composition is really nice on this double page spread. The magazine is very easy to read and get around, you don’t get lost and it is not confusing for the reader. The magazine is made up of one whole background image that spreads across the two pages with text overlaid over the top. The double page spread is put together thoughtfully- thinking about the reader on every angle which makes the magazine a lot more personal and pleasurable. • 36. Heading Finally a heading! This heading is the Q logo with the title next to it saying ‘contents’ it is very minimal but also is quiet effective. The contrast between the colours of Q and the actual heading is very nice to look at against the red background. The heading is in a red banner at the top which starts the page off. Issue number Also in the red banner at the top in a really light/ faint white font there is the issue number. This is basically telling the audience what issue it is and keeps them all organised. Subheading Under the heading there is a subheading which is in a really thin red strip, this is so that it stands out. The subheading says ‘features’ and it is in a small white font. I don’t think this is clear to read and doesn’t stand out as well as it could. I think that the red highlight over it looks good with the red header at the top. Front page There is a screen shot of the front page on the contents page. This allows the reader to remember what the magazine is featuring and what is inside. This is good on the contents page as it is showing the contents of the page in a visual manner. Promotion Underneath the screenshot of the front cover there is a selection of magazine samples. These are there to promote other issues of the magazine and also makes the reader want to subscribe to the magazine. This is a really good way for the magazine to promote other pages in this issue then other issues in the magazine. Menu There is a menu strip running down the side of the central splash image. This is telling the audience what is in the magazine and the page numbers it is found on. The numbers then match up to images on the page which show a little insider into the pages. The numbering down the side is very bold and stands out along with the bold headings which have a light amount of text underneath. Branding There isn’t much branding used on this content page other then the use of logo on the heading and the small logo at the bottom. This is very light and isn’t in the readers face but it also still promotes the magazine. Colour The colour on the contents page sticks with the house style theme running the whole way through. Black, white and red. The same the whole way through the red is used as feature and is used to highlight key points and focus/ important information. This means that the red is only lightly used. It is a nice hint to the black and white and keeps the classical, formal and established vibe. Layout The layout on the contents page is probably the most crowded on the whole of the magazine. Which isn’t a bad thing. It makes the magazine look exciting and the way it is more crowded doesn’t take the nice relaxing feeling away because of the balance the magazine still looks professional and airy. I really like how the contents page has a equal split between images and text. All the text is on the left hand side of the splash image and the pictures are on right, this makes the overcrowded page more balanced and clean. Typography The typography on this page is not at it’s strongest. I found the font used not as easy to read as the ones used on the double page spread. I think the ones on the double page spread were easier to read. This text has a really close leading and seems to close together, the fonts are also really small as the images are suppose to be the focus points. Even the heading could have been more bold and stand out more. Splash image This splash image is different to the rest of the images featured in Q, it is more of an action image which shows you the enthusiasm of the band and what they are like. I really think this is an image to get the magazine off to a kick, it is almost used as a plug to get the audience to want to see more. The props used give of the vibes of what the band is like and the sort of music they play whilst adding to the fact it is an action photo. The clothing, facial expressions and body language make the photo more relaxed and fun, this again changes the mood of the image for the audience. Finally the positioning of the image is on point. It is directly in the centre, this makes the image the focus point and is also funny as the artist is looking at his face on the front cover which shows that Q really think about what they are doing- adds a nice touch.
  • 37. Evaluation of analysis Q was one of my favourite magazines to analyse. I really like how well thought about it is and how much as an audience you feel connected to it. There are a few things that i have took inspiration from and then there is a few things that i don’t like as much about the magazine. First of all the things I liked in the magazine. I took a lot of inspiration from the general style of the magazine. I really love how simple and mature it is, it is very nice and tidy to look at and I really want my magazine to have the same tidy and fresh feeling to it. Next I really like the colours used. There is a running colour scheme of the black white and red which is something that akes the magazine- something I will look into adding to my magazine. The images in the magazine are beautiful, they are very high quality and the fact they are in black and white just makes them look so elegant, the coloured images pop with colour and I love how they warm up the whole page. Finally I love the house style which runs through the magazine, I really desire to have a house style as it makes the magazine 10 times better. Now for the things I didn’t like on the magazine. I really didn’t dig for the font. There was points where it just didn’t fit with the style at all, there was other points when it just was unbearable to read and was too harsh on the eyes, however I will take this to mind when I choose my fonts and make my magazine.
