This presentation discusses visual reading aids and strategies to help students with dyslexia or visual impairments. It outlines several strategies including using colored overlays, window rulers, adjusting text size and positioning. The strategies are intended to help with issues like tracking words, eye strain, copying and comprehension by reducing visual distortions and movement of text for students. Research shows these low-tech solutions can significantly improve reading ability and success for students with underlying visual processing or basic visual deficits.
In today's educational system, we have reached a stage where we can differentiate between a child's temper tantrum and a learning disability. However, it is still imperative to know more about learning disabilities so as to facilitate their inclusion in mainstream education.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. Overview of Strategy
Purpose- Visual difficulties among students with learning
disabilities take two forms: visual-processing dysfunction
and deficits in basic visual skills.
Students with a visual-processing dysfunction have problems
interpreting visual information even when the visual
information is clear.
Students with basic visual disability have problems obtaining
sufficient visual information, but can interpret what they see.
Research Base-These are not considered information-
processing disorders, but can potentially evolve other
disabilities. Despite differences in causes and primary
interventions, the two types of visual difficulties may lead
to similar behaviors and may respond to similar secondary
strategies.Visual tracking aids enable students to
maintain their place on a page of text and process
information better. Color overlays can also assist by
lessening the contrast to make text look clearer.
3. Population
• 2nd-5th grade students with…
• Dyslexia or
• Visual Impairments
Content
• Subject-
• Reading (can apply to all
subjects and daily life)
• VisualAbility
4. Steps of Strategy
1. Work with the student in a small group or one-on-one to
assess the students’ visual reading abilities.
2. Use reading level appropriate material.
3. Conduct the assistive technologies survey found at
http://www.onionmountaintech.com/files/PersonalChoice
s.pdf
4. Determine the area of need (focusing, positioning, color
contrast, or size)
5. Once a need is targeted apply strategies for that need…
• Focusing-use tracking aids such as a reading
window/ruler (Teacher made reading
windows are easy to create by cutting a
rectangular window in a strip of card stock.)
• Positioning- display reading material upright and
at different angles.
• Color contrast-place each of the different colors,
one at a time, over a page of print. Select the
colored overlay that makes the print the clearest
and easiest to read.
• Size- enlarge print size of reading materials and
worksheets.
6. Use multiple visual reading strategies if necessary, and
use multiple senses during instruction.
7. Prepare for reading success.
Focusing Positioning
Color Contrast Size
5. Strengths
The use of visual reading aids
provides new opportunities for
many at-risk readers.
Decreases stress and frustrations
while reading, and increases
students’ positive attitudes
towards reading.
Weaknesses
Unfortunately, there are no cures
dyslexia and some visual
impairments, but colored
overlays and other strategies
have made a tremendous
difference in the lives of students
with visual disabilities.
Students need to be guided to
use assistive technologies
independently, so they do not
become distractions.
6. Possible Adaptations
• (1) Students who are ELLs
-It is beneficial for students who are
ELLs to use window rulers because it
allows them to focus on reading one
line at time so that they do not get
overwhelmed with unknown words.
• (2) Students with disabilities)
-Students with basic visual deficits
may benefit from visual therapy (eye
exercises) or the use of tinted
glasses. Students with visual
impairments may also benefit from
enlarged print on pages and even
the use of bolder colors.
7. Results Intended to Achieve
Students with Dyslexia or Visual Impairments
sometimes experience…
Letter or word reversals
Eye strain, headaches
Problems tracking words
or numbers on a page
Problems copying
Difficulty reading for long periods of
time
Slow, halting reading
Poor comprehension
TheseVisual ReadingAids are intended to…
Reading Success
Confidence
Independence
8. Conclusion
For some people, looking at black letters on white paper causes headaches and eye fatigue,
or words may seem to shake, move, or reverse. The correct colored overlay can dramatically
reduce visual distortions or discomfort and improves reading and learning ability.
Students who see letters, numbers, pictures or objects sliding, reversing, shaking, and/or
doubling often have visual dyslexia. All that movement makes learning to read extremely
difficult. The correct colored overlay placed over a page of print can stop or reduce the
movement and enable the student to read.
When these same students try to copy a page of print, their letters, words, and numbers
show the distortions they actually see. Fortunately, when the correct colored overlay is
placed over that same page of print, the movement stops, students perceive the words and
numbers as they really are and write them correctly. This is the way mere colored overlays
have made a significant impact on students. Window rulers, positioning trays, and larger text
have also improved students’ reading ability tremendously.

Hi my name is Marilyn Romero and the Strategy I chose to discuss from my strategy notebook is visual reading aids
Presenting visual reading strategies is very important and can make the difference to ask readers. The reaon being is because…Research shows that…On the right u can see an exaple of how color overlays may help students wth dyslexia
The population intended for this strategy are..content wise this strategy to intended to help students in reading but can be applied to all subjects because every subject requires reading as well as students can benefit from improving their visual ability to better process information presented across all subjects.
BulletsTo right you can see the different strategies corresponding to the areas of visual needs.
Multiple straegies can be used with students as needed. This straategy itself is intended to cater to specific needs of studets and is adapted as needed as well. However it has immediate benefits to students who are englanguage learns and students with disabilitiesFor students who are ellsFor students with dis
As you can see students with dysleia or visual impairments experience many difficulties while reading which leads to many frustrations, by providing strategies students are able to read in a way that meets their needs so that information presented to them is more clear.
