Hoekstra zal betogen en laten zien dat te beginnen in de jaren ’60 de koude oorlog in hoge mate een fictieve oorlog(sdreiging) was. Au fond wisten we dat ‘de Russen’/ het Warschaupact ons niet echt zouden en konden aanvallen, maar we bleven doen alsof.
Voordat hij bij de BVD werkte (1971-1987) werkte Frits Hoekstra een kleine vijf jaar bij de LUID, de luchtmacht inlichtingendienst. In die periode – hij maakte intensief de ‘spanning’ rond de inval van de WP troepen in de CSSR in augustus ’68 mee – werd hem al duidelijk dat de dreiging van een militaire aanval door de Russen c.s. een fictie was. Toch hadden we parate troepen in Noord Duitsland……. Ook binnenlands werd al in 1966 in een studie door de BVD vastgesteld dat de CPN niet langer een gevaar vormde voor de staatsveiligheid. Toch werd die partij tot diep in de jaren ’80 breed en diep geïnfiltreerd.
Frits Hoekstra (Leeuwarden, 1946), studeerde Nederlands in Groningen en sociologie in Leiden. Beide als extraneus, want intussen werkte hij eerst bij de Luchtmacht Inlichtingendienst (1966- 1971) en vanaf 1971 tot 1987 bij de BVD, waar hij na een periode in het operationele werk hoofd werd van een afdeling in de contraspionage en later een afdeling die binnenlandse politieke operaties deed.
In 1987 verliet hij de rijksdienst om te gaan werken bij de N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie in Groningen. Vanaf 2000 schreef hij voor enkele (zaken)bladen, en had een consultancy praktijk, vooral actief bij de ontwikkeling van het Eemsmondgebied, Hij publiceerde twee boeken over zijn BVD ervaringen: “In Dienst van de BVD, spionage en contraspionage in Nederland”, (BOOM, 2004) en “De Dienst, de BVD van binnenuit”, (BOOM, 2012). Sedert 2006 woont Frits Hoekstra in het zuiden van Frankrijk.
