Because of the passing of the Volstead Act in 1920, production and distribution of alcohol became an
extremely profitable business. With this also came a noticeable rise in organized crime in many of the
big cities. Even worse, the crimes committed by members of these gangs became more violent. Soon
prisons were overcrowded and were merely hold facilities.

freedoms in our Charter that we see as fundamental are not present in various countries such as North
Korea. Given this, I have come to realize how lucky I am to have these rights that are protected by a
Charter and begun to appreciate having these rights. Citizens can protect their Charter rights by
learning specifically what rights and freedoms are protected in order to present to other their
constitutional rights should they try to violate them. As well, if the rights are violated, citizens can
take a case to court in order to be compensated for the violation.

Commodified Labor Power
Commodified labor power is sustained by personal reproductive and female reproductive labor. Both
of these forms of labor are lesser recognized because they don t directly produce profit...unlike
slavery. Slave labor is less recognized by consumers in today s economy because it is the most
extreme exploitation of a human s labor power, and the commodification of humans allows the
consumer to delay thinking of where the labor came from, or ignore it altogether. Individuals laboring
as slaves give the most to capitalism with virtually no return. Simultaneously, an abusive industry
grows and its investors profit and thrive from the capital surplus derived from free labor. Slavery
exists all around the world and affects everyone from the clothes they buy to the food they eat.
Although the the 13th Amendment to the U.S. constitution abolished slavery, it still allows for it to be
used as a punishment for crime (13th Amendment, 2016). Therefore, inside the United States, any
prisoner is subject to involuntary servitude and extreme exploitation for capital gain.
Capital gain is reliant on exploitation by some means. Social division of labor is imperative to the
continuation of human labor exploitation. It coincides with consumers ignoring the condition of labor
behind a product. Even when the exploitation of labor is understood, it s perpetuated by every class
reliance on manufactured goods. Primitive accumulation, coined by Karl Marx, is a form of
exploitation that was critical to the switch from feudalism to capitalism it was the process in which

of the industrial revolution, leading the world into a new modern age. Europe s advancements in the
past centuries certainly had great benefits for the world, but Europe was not perfect; in fact, it was far

greatest aggressors. Europe was responsible for the transatlantic slave trade, colonizing nearly the
entirety of Africa, and the two World Wars. So this dilema begs the question, was Europe the visionary

Many may argue that Europe s involvement in slavery and the building of colonial empires makes

on records of voyages in the archives of port customs and maritime insurance records, put the total
number of African slaves transported by European traders, to at least 12 million people (The Abolition

by Ann Benson, the theme, sometimes deceiving can be good, develops throughout the novel. Ann
Benson supports the theme with the motif of deception by making the characters lie to save
themselves, making them lie to have more composure, and making them lie to seem like a better
person.
A motif in the novel that conveys the theme are characters lying to save themselves from getting
caught. One example of Alejandro lying to save himself from being caught is when he lies about his
religion. For example, the author states, Sire, I am a Spaniard, and I bear no allegiance to France
(304). This shows that Alejandro lies about his religion and ethnicity so he is not given away. Lying
also helps him keep his job as a physician. Benson also states, Alejandro claims he is Alejandro

Wedekind at the University of Bern in Switzerland conducted a study to find if MHC variations affect

My Life At Indian River State College
From a young age I have had a passion for sports. Not just a single sport but all sports. The
understanding of the sport either it be soccer, baseball, football, or rugby came easy to me and I was
always thought of an important player of the team from my coaches. I love being on the team yet still
performing individually. Late in my teens another passion developed and it too came easy for me. This
passion would be the performing on stage; Acting. The beautiful art of Acting has recently impacted
my life in a way I cannot describe. After success with other performances at my high school, I have
been encouraged to seriously step foot into the world of acting. Being enrolled at Indian River State
College will allow me to begin my journey and stay close to home but not for long. I plan to transfer
to seek my Bachelor s Degree in Sports Management and I may even double with a Bachelor Degree
of Fine Arts. I see my future as being someone who is in the spotlight. I plan on using my Bachelor s
Degree to achieving my goal of becoming a head football coach of an unranked University team and
raising them to the top and proceed to the Professional level. My focus will not be on me but on my
players. I will seek to find what motivates them individually and combine them to produce a winning
