June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Welcome from your chairman
Welcome everyone to the July meeting, our last before the AGM in September. I hope by the time you
read this that the rain has stopped and the sun is shining. Although there is no meeting in August, the
Summer Picnic will take place on TuesdayAugust 16th at Queen Elizabeth’sAcademy.
The referendum for our membership of the EU is finally over and we will have to live with the
decision. We are lucky to live in a country where we have the chance to vote and make our
feelings known. The future is something of an unknown quantity and it will be sometime before
we finally sever our connection with the EU but what happens is in our hands now.
There is a selection of photos on the notice board this month from the U3A trip to Devon, all
taken by the happy holiday makers, a full listing is on Flickr so follow the link on the website to

Please accept my apologies, but I must mention the lack of members coming forward to
help with the committee. Very few have shown an interest and this is very sad. We cannot
function without a committee; it is imperative members step up and help with the running
of our U3A. The present committee is hard working and diligent; we have some fun during a
meeting, plus a coffee and we hopefully learn something from the proceedings. You may be
pleasantly surprised!

Words from the Editor
The political upheavals of the last few weeks have not fully subsided, but at least we can draw breath
and enjoy the summer sunshine. Sorry, that last bit was a joke in very poor taste! We can enjoy what
passes for summer this year while our political leaders play a form of Russian roulette for our
entertainment.
Perhaps I am too cynical in my old age, but the thought of the Olympics this autumn does not really
inspire me in view of the vast sums of money spent by a country that can ill-afford it, the health concerns
of Ziko and the probability that more drug cheats will be uncovered. Yet amongst all the uncertainties of
our lives, we manage to carry on and strive to make the best of what we have.
And we have our U3A to help us in this. So make the most of it, as small pleasures do build up and do
smooth over the rough edges of the problems we face.Apassing thought – did the CurrentAffairs Group
discuss Brexit? I haven't heard of any deaths, divorces or riots, so I must assume they didn't or else they
are a lot better behaved than the politicians.

3. A Holiday in Devon
The weather forecast for our U3A holiday in Devon promised rain for most of the week so
we were delighted when we actually had some decent weather and even some sunny days.
Devon has beautiful countryside with gently
rolling hills as well as pretty coastal towns. We
were based in Paignton, which isn’t as pretty as
some places but has some shops, a cinema and
rail and bus stations. However, we went
somewhere more interesting by coach nearly
every day.
Brixham has pastel-painted houses rising up the
hills from the harbour. Some of us walked to a
nearby coastal headland nature reserve called
Berry Head, where we saw fortifications built to
repel Napoleon and where there was a good café. I also really liked Dartmouth with its wide
river leading down to the sea. Some of us enjoyed walking alongside the river to the river
mouth where there is a small castle, church and graveyard. We were tired and were
relieved to find that there was an inflatable ferryboat back to town.
Another day we went to Totnes, where the pretty
old main street goes uphill and is lined with nice
shops. Then we heard the church bells ringing and
saw a wedding party come out of the church.
Later that day we went for a trip on a steam train
from Totnes down the Dart valley to Buckfastleigh,
where there is an Abbey. It was a lovely day.
One day, the group went around Plymouth Sound
on a cruise which took about an hour and was
very interesting. It was a rainy day, but luckily
there is a big shopping centre in Plymouth so all the women were happy. That evening most
people went to a variety show in Babbacombe, which included some very amusing acts.
The hotel was clean with friendly helpful
staff. The waiters in the dining room all
seemed to be from Eastern Europe and were
very well trained and really nice. I wonder
what will happen to them now.
I want to thank Margaret for organising a
lovely holiday and I am sad that it is the last
one we will be having in this country but we
still have the holiday to Majorca in
September to look forward to.

4. Local History Group
On Friday July 1st, the Local History group was given a lively and entertaining talk on ‘The Moor
Ponds, A Thread in the Web of Time’ by Stephen Walker. Sue and I had heard Stephen give a
short talk previously but this time it became very much more interesting.
The Moor Ponds are south of Newstead Abbey, in an area from Papplewick to Bestwood and
were the culmination of many years hard work to install cotton mills in this part of the Leen Valley
in the 18th century.
Stephen told his story of a group of Friends of Moor Ponds who, through sixteen years of hard
work, uncovered a tale of the Industrial Revolution. A more intricate water management system I
have never heard about. Bad Lord Byron was involved and we all know he was an interesting
man.
We hope to have Stephen back next year to talk about the local people, the workers and the
lives they led during that time.

Sci-Tech Group Visit
Hard hats, safety boots, and hi-viz jackets were the order of the day when SciTech group visited
the Bombardier factory in Derby in early June.
Knowledgeable guides gave the 19
SciTech members an in-depth tour of the
manufacturing facilities.
In production were the Capitalstar electric
multiple units for Transport for London and
Metros for the London Underground. The
group was introduced to 'Turbostar' diesel
multiple units being produced for Anglia
Trains, Central Trains and other rail
companies. The guides explained the
dedicated testing on-site facilities
comprising Dynamic 1.8 km test track which is used before the trains are delivered to the
customer.
When using the London Underground, you will be travelling on Bombardier trains made in Derby.

9. Our June Speaker
‘There Will Never Be Another You.'
Paul Newsham’s expertise and sheer professionalism shone through as he took us on a
whirlwind tour of biometrics. Did we really know what it meant? I think we do now as we were
shown the complexities of fingerprints, earprints and footprints and how they came into forensic
science where everyone leaves a unique trace of themselves wherever they move.
His lively presentation was enhanced by audience participation showing some of the ways the
police use biometrics in forensic investigation to catch and identify criminals, although his jokes
needed forensic examination themselves!
It is rare that we sit enthralled far past midday, but he he kept us there. I hope this polymath, with
his wide range of talks from forensics to Derbyshire Churches via Biometrics and Crime Novels,
will visit us again.

Garden Visits Group
Members of the Garden Visits Group assembled at Mansfield Football Club’s ground to journey
to the Breezy Knees gardens off the road between Malton and Scarborough. We had all hoped
for a dry day but, as we got nearer to the venue, the sky became more overcast.
On arrival, after being fortified by a visit to the café, we
started our tour of the acres of grounds, looking at the
magnificent herbaceous borders with separate
displays of shrubs, conifers, roses, beautiful peonies
and day lilies – the biggest flowers I have ever seen!
Benches could be found in every section so we could
sit and admire the beauty of it without having to do any
weeding.
The sky gradually cleared and the sun shone for us.
Another visit to the café for lunch then on to see the
fountain, the base of which was the white rose of
Yorkshire laid on the ground, with white pebbles and
green glass for the leaves in a black metal frame. We
could have spent a small fortune on plants as it was
hard to choose what to buy. As we boarded the coach
to travel home, the sky darkened but we missed the
rain. Another excellent day out organised by Janet
Whitlam and Karen Troop.

Mama Mia
I have to write a few words about the visit to Mama Mia on Thursday June 23rd
– I'm still singing!
What an incredible performance! Just as good if not better than the London production. How
could you not sing along to such invigorating music? The cast each had superb voices and the
choreography wore us out just watching. Everyone in the full house was up and dancing by the
end. This show caught the spirit of ABBA and the generation that enjoyed them in the '70s.

The musical Beautiful is a musical show, not a one woman play. It is the life story of Carol King who
wrote many hit songs made famous by various artists like Neil Sedaka, The Drifters, Arethra Franklin,
The Monkees and The Shirelles. It is music you will remember – Will You Love Me Tomorrow?, Take
Good Care Of My Baby, It Might Well Rain Until September, Happy Days Are Here Again and many
more.
Members of Mansfield U3A went to see it last year and said it was very good. I am looking forward to
hearing songs with a melody. We have good seats in the stalls at a discount price of £35. There are still
seats available but the balance has to be paid by the July 28th. Cheques to Mansfield and District U3A.
B&B will still be at the St Giles Hotel, then a visit to The Shard and Windsor Castle with entrance fees
included. All for £245.50 (sharing). The single supplement is £36 (down from £46 last year). If your £50
deposit was paid before the end of March, £10 will be deducted from the price of the theatre ticket (£35).
If you do not want to go to the show, deduct £35 from the full amount (£210.50).
A pre-theatre meal at Henry's in Covent Garden will be arranged at a later date but this is not included in
the above price. Make all cheques payable to Mansfield & District U3A and send them to Sheila Whalley
at 335 Berryhill Lane, Mansfield. Include your phone number and which U3Ayou are in.
