June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. Welcome from your chairman
GOOD MORNING EVERYBODY. Here we are already heading towards the end of February 2014
– where has that gone? While we may be getting a touch of the 'Winter Blues', we know that Spring
is not far behind! In fact, I saw a bunch of snowdrops blooming in my garden this week and bulbs
shooting up through the earth. How lucky we are living in an area that has not been desolated by
the floods once more – I can think of nothing worse than seeing one’s home destroyed.
This month we have our Annual Quiz Night to look forward to on Saturday, 22 February, as usual
organised by Pauline and Ian Boucher, who do a sterling job.
Also, as Pauline announced at January’s meeting, the Quiz itself will actually start at 6.30 pm, so we
all need to be at our tables before then – which are tables of 8 people.
I don’t know how long it takes them to find the questions to all of the categories, but I wish I had all
the answers. For those members who have not been before, please remember to bring your own
drinks (these can be alcoholic ones – but not too much!) At the break there will be a platter of sandwiches and cakes provided by members of the Social Committee, who work hard doing this.
Our thanks, therefore, must go out to everyone involved in making this such an enjoyable evening.
In addition, I would remind everyone, new and long-standing members, that we are seeking new
committee members to ensure continuity of the committee, without which there would be no Mansfield and District U3A. As our president, Rita, said in January: “Your U3A needs you!”. Please speak
to me or any member of the committee if you are interested and would like to be invited to a
meeting to see it in action.
The above always reminds me of work, when we learnt that Winston Churchill said: “Always tell
people what you are going to tell them; tell them; and tell them what you have told them!”
Having just returned from a break that let me catch-up on all of the magazines and papers I had
accumulated over Christmas, the New Year and throughout January (and what a pile that was!) I
had always assumed, wrongly, that once retired everything would be so easy with much time to
have everything in order and in its place.
But not so, like so many more people, I find there is less time to complete all of our daily tasks and
relax and I wonder why this should be the case and how we had time to work? Anyway, I read much
about our intake of sugar and fat – which seems to be the topic of recent television programmes too
– and the healthy lifestyle we should all be pursuing. Obviously this is a very disciplined way of life
which has to be followed endlessly. So, jolly good luck to you all and carpe diem!
Glenis Carr

Book table
SALE OF BOOKS in January raised £50.60, which was a very good sum, although not a record
as September 2012 raised £56.15, but the best January ever.

YOUR subs down by around £2 per member over the year.
Anyone willing to take the job on is welcome to volunteer. If you would like to help behind the
counter, come along any month and let one of the ‘regular’ volunteers look at the notice
boards some time.

4. Recent Events
Members' Day
WE HAVE such an amazing abundance of talent within our U3A. This was evident at our Members'
Day in January. The theme for the member speakers session was poetry and reading; the response
was fantastic.
Our Chair, Glenis Carr, started before the tea break with a witty little poem that made all the ladies
laugh (and perhaps a few men)!
Sheila Whalley wrote a brilliant, epic poem about all the groups within our U3A; everyone was
waiting what she was going to say about their favourite group! I am sure we should record this piece
and offer it to all new members as a humorous guide to activities.
Many people were reminded of their school
days by the two lovely pieces read by Molly
Pollitt. The Writing for Pleasure group put
together an array of their own work, ranging
from War Days to thoughts about U3A. What a
talented group they are.
One of our new members, Steve Robinson,
delighted us all with his two pieces, his own
poem about Granddad and an enthralling
monologue by Marriott Edgar. This interactive
number kept us all in suspense wondering what
was going to happen to the baby elephant.
Ahhhhhh!
U3A was again the topic of the next, great poem
by Fred Brown; it is great to hear an alternate
male view on the subject. Ophelia Clutterbucket
was one of two entertaining pieces by Jenny
Roberts; this was a short story of a young, pretty girl who dreamed of a wonderful life and, like us
all, grew older and wiser. (It was an abridged version cleverly adapted to fit into a tight time-scale.)
John Gilding treated us to a medley of popular tunes on the piano. Thank you John for the great
entertainment. Glenis finally added a lovely poem about the beauty of our countryside, which was a
fitting end to a fantastic morning.

Thoresby holiday break
THE MORNING of 27th January was once again the beginning of our U3A five-day visit to
Thoresby Hall. We arrived in the morning and greeted friends old and new. There were 204
members of U3As from around six areas from as far afield as Leicestershire’s Soar Valley. The
weather was dry and bright but cold so a few members took advantage of this and walked around
the grounds and woods.
On the Tuesday, Linda and Sue welcomed us to the games room where there were various card
and board games for all to learn and play. Scrabble, Rummicub and Uno to name a few. One I had
not heard of was Mexican train – a version of Dominoes I believe. This was all a great success and
due to be repeated next year.
Ashfield led a walk from Whaley Thorns for those who were feeling energetic; for those who weren’t
there was plenty to do.

Recent Events (cont. from p4)
… Don and Graham went to the Spa, where Karen surprised them in the Jacuzzi. Later John and
Karen went to the wine tasting session; between you and me they did more than just taste it! (Four
bottles between 5 people, hmm!)
The evening bought us excellent entertainment; the theme was musicals, scenes from Blood
Brothers, Chicago and Les Miserables to name a few of the most enjoyable.
Wednesday saw yet another walk this time led by Ian to Clumber Park. A muddy time was had by
all. (Ian wished he had smelly vision, a yard, cow’s, wet, need I say more?)
9. The rest of us had loads to choose from: swimming
to short mat-bowls, where Don, Len, Graham and
John won a very exciting match after they beat me
and team in the semis.
Thursday for me was a great day as I went on the
Hawk Experience. Sue from Sherwood U3A and I
took out two of the birds. Sue choose Louise, a Barn
Owl and I choose Curly, a European Eagle Owl,
although he was the largest and heaviest. Curly was
gorgeous, wish he fitted in my bag!
That evening bought us again great entertainment – a 50s night – and very professional.
There was so much happening every day: Terry’s 5 o'clock quizzes, dancing lessons … (too much
for me to mention here), also evening entertainment. Something for all or just sit quietly in the Great
Hall or library. Every evening bought us fine entertainment from the Entertainment Team. Friday
came all-too-soon as we checked out and said our farewells.
Once again it was a brilliant holiday. Our thanks go to Terry and Lilian for all their hard work in
making it a great success.
Looking forward to 2015 Terry!

Groups News

Garden Visits
HODSOCK PRIORY – 24th February
There are still a few seats left for this outing. Coach fare, hot drink on arrival, guided tour of the
gardens, hot lunch and then time to browse either around the gardens or nursery all for £26.
Sounds like a good day out that leaves the Odeon car park at 9-30am.

More details later but for now I have booked a guided tour of the gardens and the coach is booked.
Prices vary because of recently introduced bargain rates for U3A and RHS members so see Janet
for details.

10. Art
WE HAD an interesting session on 15th
January, which was attended by 11 eager
members. Michael Morton provided our life
model as we sketched him sitting down, then
lying down. Some more pictures are on the
website.
Obviously, this gave us all a certain amount of
amusement and each of us produced something different as we all saw our model from
different perspectives. An enjoyable morning.
We are all at different levels of expertise, but
the joy of creating an artwork of some kind is
the key factor in our group.
Our next meeting will be on 19th February
when our subject matter will be a pair of
boots! So come along and join us, as we have a few places available.

Theatre Visits
WE WERE transported to The Playhouse Nottingham on 8th January in a comfortable minibus to
see the Pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk. On arrival we enjoyed a pre-show lunch in the adjacent restaurant. The scenery and costumes being very colourful.
Four coach-loads of children filled the seats at the front and there was a lot of enthusiastic audience
participation shouting "It's behind YOU" etc.– including the adults. I hope we can do it again this
year.
Thanks to Margaret for organising the bus.

LONDON MUSICAL – THE PAJAMA GAME
10th - 11th June cost £155 (single supplement £35)
This is very good value for money & covers coach fare, B&B, theatre tickets with excellent
seats & visit to Hampton Court Palace on the return journey. £14 for two courses at Porters
in Covent Garden, which is optional. Deduct £29.50p if you choose not to see The Pajama
Game & do your own thing.
Please come and sign up at the February meeting with a cheque or cash for £29.50 as a
deposit to secure your theatre ticket or £10 if no Pajama Game. Optional insurance of £10 is
available as usual. Cheques payable to Mansfield & District U3A. Will collect £5 deposits
from those who choose to eat at Porters.
We must pay for theatre tickets before 28th February or prices will increase.

Luncheon Club
THE COUNTRYMAN at Kirkby, The Lion at Farnsfield and Bestwood Lodge at Arnold all got
hundred percent approval at 281, on Nottingham Road Mansfield, on 23rd January, when we
reviewed our 2013 programme and planned our next events. We'll be returning.
11. And 281 will probably feature next time as Brian and Barbara Harvey again organised a superb
New Year lunch.
Photos here ...
February 20th will be our first visit to The Maypole at Wellow, where new local owners have transformed the old and run-down Durham Ox into a very stylish bar/restaurant offering quality homecooked food and immaculate service. Our special menu will offer 2 courses at £13.95 and 3 at
£18.95.
Then, on March 20th, Alan Miller has arranged for us to visit Woodborough Hall, near Calverton
for the first time. This is one of the most beautiful country estate hotels in Nottinghamshire and
home to one of the county's top restaurant teams so this lunch is sure to be popular. The varied
menu Alan has chosen will be priced at just £13.50 for 2 courses and £16.50 for 3, including canapé
pre-starters, coffee/tea and petits fours.
Please pre-book for these at the Lunch Club table or by email to dlpruk@aol.com.
And please keep checking our web page as Sheila Whalley and Karen Troop hope to announce
details of lunches at The Chesterfield Arms near Gunthorpe and the new Fothergill's (Lamb's at
The Market as was) in Mansfield town centre shortly.
(The Chesterfield Arms is gaining fame as one of the first community-run pubs in the county after
villagers resisted the brewer's closure plans and Fothergill's aims to build on the owners' success at
the Best Side at The Redgate in premises large enough to cope with the Luncheon Club.)

I hope to get full information on the Mansfield U3A website soon, probably by the time you
are reading this.

12. Sheila Townsend. It is with deep regret that we have learned that Sheila died suddenly on 7th
January. Her funeral at the Methodist Chapel in Rainworth on Thursday, 30th January was followed
by burial at the Tithe Green Cemetery near Calverton.

Speakers' Corner
OUR speaker today is Angela Plumb, who will present an illustrated talk detailing a fabulous trip to
see the wildlife of the Falkland Islands, especially the penguins. The war memorials and a warplane wreck are also included in the photos. (Last year Angela entertained us all with her amazing
stories of the polar bears in the Arctic.)
Angela is trying to raise £900 for charity to send a child to Lapland with 'When You Wish Upon A
Star' charity. She has also produced some original prints of her photos as notelets that she is selling
in packs of 3 for £2.50. All the money is going to the charity.
