Hannah Stodel gave an inspiring talk about her sailing journey and upcoming plans to participate in the 2020 Vendee Globe race. The club supported various cadet programs over the year and recognized top performers at an awards ceremony. Upcoming events at the club include Christmas drinks on Friday and a Christmas lunch on Sunday.

Dear Members,
The talk by Hannah Stodel on Friday was a huge success. Hannah was both very honest and hugely
insightful as she described her journey from learning to sail as a Cadet in Brightlingsea, through her
school racing and Paralympic Campaigns to her planned participation in the Vendee Globe in 2020.
This is a truly inspirational young lady and the Club will be following her journey as she tries to raise
over £4 million to fund the race. Whilst you may not have that kind of money in the bank account,
you might like to support her by buying a tee-shirt or jacket for someone for Christmas, so do check
out her website at www.hannahstodelracing.com We are planning to ask Hannah back to the Club
in 2018 and will monitor her progress.
The Joint BSC/ CYC Cadet Disco and Prize Giving party was also well attended, with both Cadets and
Parents enjoying themselves well into the night!
As well as recognising all participants with a Club Medal for their participation over the year, the
following Cadets won significant Colne Yacht Club Trophies:
• Geoff Bloice Trophy (Most improved cadet overall): Celeste Oldfield
• Coleman Cup (The Most Helpful Cadet): Oscar Oldfield
• Chief Mutineers Shield for most improved male Helm: Connor Young
• Chief mutineers shield for most improved female Helm: Sophie Hilder
• Most Attendance: Summer Russell
This event rounds off another successful year for the Cadets and we would like to say a very big
thank you to all the adults who have supported the programme throughout the year, in many
different ways.
2018 will also be an exciting time for the Cadet programme as we ramp up the training for our own
instructors, add in some Sunday racing and hopefully purchase some new Optimists to encourage
even more youngsters to get on the water.

Any Old Iron, Any Old Iron?
One of the Club's Sonata trailers is now so corroded it needs rebuilding.
Do you have, tucked away behind your shed, (in case it comes in handy) any ‘H’ or ‘C’ section 4”- 6”
(100mm – 150mm) RSJs or any heavy weight angle iron that you would donate to a good cause?
Failing that, a complete trailer you could donate?
Please contact the CYC office and we will arrange collection. Thank you!
The Sonata Team.
