MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT
The Saturday 1st XI Played 17, Won 5, WD1, LD 2, T 0, L 7, NR 3, Bat 20, Bowl 25, Points 159, and
finished eighth in Division 1 (First XIs). The Saturday 2nd XI Played 17, Won 5, WD 1, LD 1, T 0, L 9, NR
2, Bat 19, Bowl 19, Points 148, and finished eighth in Division 1 (Second XIs). The Sunday 1st XI won 9 of
the 19 played, losing 9 with one tie, and the Sunday 2nd XI played 12, won 4, drew 1, and lost 7. The
general theme throughout the sides was a lack of stability. We need players to commit themselves to
playing week in, week out!
There will be a trial net on Saturday 18th April at the Oval, 12.00 - 14.00hrs. On Saturday 25th April we
are away to defend The Roehampton S.W.15. Cup, and on Sunday 26th April there will be a trial game at
home. On the 2nd May the Saturday 1st XI are playing in their first league game, away at West End Esher,
whilst the Saturday 2nd XI are at home to West End Esher. On Sunday 3rd May we have a home game in
the 1st round of the league cup versus Merton and a Sunday friendly versus Crane away. Tony Fenton is
busy arranging the Sunday fixtures and will circulate these on the club website in the near future.
We are also entering the leagues midweek 20/20 competition. Paul McCann will coordinate the
sides/fixtures and will circulate further details in due course. The midweek LMS competition is also going
from strength to strength and details will be circulated by Andrew Woodhead/Dez Telfer during the course
of the season. As ever, our grateful thanks go to Eddie McVarish and Alan Hartridge for all their work on
the ground throughout the year. Some of the scores achieved were a testament to the blood, sweat and
tears Eddie and Alan put in.
The AGM is on Wednesday 25th March 2015 starting at 7.30pm sharp in the upstairs function room of the
The Dukes Head Public House, Lower Richmond Road (near Putney Bridge). Please make a special effort
to attend, as it is your opportunity to voice issues and concerns about your club. I will gladly accept
cheques/cash on the night for your playing membership, £100.00 full membership, £40.00 under
18’s/students.
The club website holds a wealth of information, and the text facility has gone a long way in improving
communication. Our thanks go to Ben Brook for his time and expertise in this field. The site can be
accessed via www.putneycricketclub.com. Although we are relying on the website/texts as our main
communication tool, it is imperative the Team Secretary, James Peters, has each players current e-mail
address, phone numbers, (home/work/mobile), and address. Would you please e-mail James with any
updates/amendments to your details. James can be contacted on (h) 020 8265 2463, (m) 07711 928141,
or e-mail jdpeters2@googlemail.com A special mention has to go to Tony Fenton, Fixture Secretary, for
all his hard work in ensuring that we had opposition week in, week out.
Our thanks go to Tony Fenton who is standing down as League representative for the club. Tony has
performed this role for a number of years and has been very efficient. Fortunately he is going to carry on
as Fixture Secretary. Due to the work that has to be performed during the close season, a replacement
was sort, and we are fortunate to have Doug Shaw filling his shoes. Thanks also to Ash Baptista who is
standing down as 100 Club promoter (Mike has agreed to take on the role), and to the following
captains/vice captains who are standing down: Saturday 1st team skipper and vice Devon Ebersohn and
Ian Almond, Saturday 2nd team skipper and vice Doug Shaw and Matt Atkins, Sunday 1st team skipper
Jon White, and Sunday 2nd team skipper and vice Chris Powell and Richard Wilson. As well as the
organisation on match days a lot of work goes on behind the scenes, and I would like to thank all of the
above for the time and effort they have displayed during their time in office.
We are looking for captains/vice captains for the majority of the sides. If you are interested in standing for
a vacant position, or indeed one already held, please get in touch with one of the committee and arrange
to get a proposer/seconder, and send an e-mail to the Club Secretary, Mark Wibberley, at least one week
prior to the AGM, ie. by 18th March 2015.

Congratulations to Dan and Emma Parmar on the birth of a baby boy, Monty Alexander, on 14.10.2014, to
Chris and Ide Powell on the birth of a baby girl, Maria Joyce, on 07.12.2014 to Ian and Hannah Almond on
the birth of a baby girl, Elin Catharina Angel, on 05.01.2015, and to Brian and Caroline Macmillan on the
birth of a baby girl, Ebeneezer David, on 03.02.2015. Congratulations also to Jon and Gisele White who
tied the knot on 22.01.2015.
The Wibberleys, Mark, Megan and Alice are busy fundraising for the charity C.R.Y., (cardiac risk in the
young), in memory of their son Emlyn. There will be a collection box on the bar throughout the summer to
put your loose change in and there is a fundraising page on the Putney CC website, (a link on the right
hand side top navigation), if you would like to make a donation. So far £5,536.23 (6,795.87 incl. gift aid)
has been raised towards the target figure of £6,000. I am sure the club can assist in getting that figure to
£10K.
Our thanks go to Brian Macmillan and other players who provided teas for the 2014 season. Brian has
agreed to provide teas on Saturdays throughout the 2015 season. We are looking for a willing party to
provide teas for Sunday games. Captains have a lot on their plate on match days and if they don’t have to
worry about organising teas, it goes a long way in making the day run smoothly!
The presentation evening held on 28th November 2014 in The Cellar Bar, Star and Garter Hotel in Putney
proved to be a great success. The club took £5321.67 from the entrance fee, raffle/auction, less expenses
of £3191.36, (cost of hall/buffet/drinks/karaoke/speaker/test tickets/plaques/engraving/sundries), and the
contribution to C.R.Y. of £400.00, total profit = £1730.31. Our thanks go to all those who donated so
generously towards the raffle and auction prizes, and of course the highest bidders on the night. Our thanks
also go to Paul and Anjna McCann, Ben Brook, Chin Ratnayake and Owen Hereford for all their hard work
in organising the event.
This year the presentation evening is going to be held on Saturday 07th November 2015 at 07.30hrs at
the same venue, The Cellar Bar of The Star and Garter Hotel, 4, Lower Richmond Road, Putney, next to
the bridge. The finer details, including details of the meal, which was pretty non-existent last year, will be
circulated during the summer months, but the club will once again subsidise the evening to keep the price
of tickets affordable. All we would ask is that you commit yourself to attending, and help make the evening
a resounding success. Please make a note in your diary !!
Cricket nets, in preparation for the 2015 season, are underway at The Oval Cricket Ground. We have two
lanes booked every Monday, 7 to 8pm (8 to 9 pm on certain dates), which commenced Monday 05th
January 2015). Details are on the web site. If you have any queries contact Dez Telfer by e-mail,
(darien.telfer@gmail.com), tel. 07905 062207, Piers Jackson, (Jackson.piers@gmail.com ), tel no. 07786
073120 or Hugo Flower, (hugo_dobsonfly@hotmail.com ), tel no. 07919 425106 who are the co-ordinators.
It is down to each individual to promote the club to increase playing membership and secure a full
programme of fixtures throughout the year. We have revamped the net next to the clubhouse, to enable
midweek practice during the season and warm up sessions prior to a weekend game.
The midweek game at Slinfold is on Wednesday 08th July, 2pm start, and for the enthusiasts amongst us,
golfing days will be arranged for Thursday 09th July and Friday 10th July. Please make a note in your
diary and book the time off work well in advance! A golf day is being arranged by Paul McCann during the
month of June. Venue will either be Effingham or Tyrells Wood. Details will be circulated in the near future.
We have put a set amount aside to have the roof refelted and guttering/facia boards replaced. There are
also some interior improvements to be made to the clubhouse. Costs will be shared with our co-hosts,
Fulham Compton Old Boys.

We have a stock of kit detailing the club motif at the club. If you are interested in purchasing a shirt, cap,
hat or sweat band, please let your captain or one of the Management Committee know. We also have an
on-line shop on the Putney CC website. A full range of cricket attire with the club motif can be purchased
at very competitive prices.
As always, our thanks go to Julian Day for the production and circulation of the Annual Report. Good Luck
for 2015!

Our membership was down on the previous season, 63 playing members as opposed to 66 in 2013.
The percentage profit for the bar was 34%.
My thanks go to Paul and Anjna McCann, Ben Brook, Chin Ratnayake and Owen Hereford for organising
the presentation evening. Thank you to those that donated items for the auction. My thanks also to each
member who contributed towards the raffle, and to the highest bidders at the auction. The above and an
evening game contributed to £2,705 of our takings for the 2014 season. The one social function in June,
made a profit of £70.00. Match fees were up, but this is attributed to tea monies not being deducted at
source.
Expenditure; I will highlight the areas with the largest differentials.
Ground account:
The equipment repairs are lower due to the roller and outfield mower not being serviced. This will feature
in next year’s accounts.
Pavilion account:
As mentioned in the accounts last year, our contribution to the joint fund has risen to £2,500 per club. The
main expense being insurance. A set amount has been put aside to have the roof re-felted and
facia/guttering repaired/replaced.
Miscellaneous account:
Teas were not deducted from the match fees on the given day, as explained above. The playing equipment
included, extra cricket balls £600.00, score books £59.96, umpire counters £7.98, 6 x plastic chairs £48.00,
gas refills £67.99. Sundries included a broken window £75.00, Gratuities £51.00.
I again ask members to settle their annual membership of £100.00/£40.00 (students) at the earliest
opportunity. Please ensure you bring sufficient monies on the day of a game to cover match fees and I do
not want to see any I.O.U’s behind the bar !!
My annual reminder “only players nominated by the captain are to go behind the bar, and I would
ask all to be vigilant,” will go a long way in retaining the percentage profit.
There are a number of clubhouse improvements taking place this year, so any suggestions for raising club
funds through social events or other means are always welcome. Have a good season, and spend plenty
of money in the clubhouse.

THE EVE AND STAN MARSHALL 100 CLUB
The 100 club of Putney Cricket Club is an ideal way of raising much needed funds and a way of winning
cash prizes. If you would like to become a member, which costs £2.00 per number per month by direct
debit, please contact Mike Curtis (michaelhcurtis@hotmail.com). We are eager to increase the existing
membership of 40 during the 2015 season. The six lucky winners drawn at The Presentation Evening on
Fri 28th November 2014 and each receiving a cheque to the value of £100.00 were: Eddie McVarish, Trudi

League 18 5 3 7 3
Friendlies 4 2 1 1 0
A season which promised much but delivered little. The key problem was availability of regular members.
An unsettled team lead to numerous underperformances throughout the season.
The first few weeks held so much promise. A regular core of 9 players with balance in the bowling and
depth in the batting meant we were able to secure victories from positions that would have seen us lose in
previous seasons. Victories over teams that finished top 3 in the league buoyed confidence and promotion
was a very realistic goal. Then unavailability and instability plagued the season till its final tense conclusion.
Good bowling through the year was unfortunately not backed up by the batting. The most glaring example
of this was being 5 down for less than 40 in consecutive weeks. Not being able to consistently put
partnerships together lead to collapses from every part of the order with every possible combination.
Relegation was almost a certainty but for Hampton Hill slipping at the final hurdle. Putney needed to score
180 runs and take 9 wickets in the final game to get enough bonus points to avoid relegation. Hampton
Hill needed just a victory to avoid the same fate. After taking the 9 wickets Putney fell 8 runs short of
securing the vital bonus point. Once again, poor batting on a flat wicket underlined the horrible woes of the
season. Luckily, Hampton Hill failed as well. This left us level on points at the end of the season. With the
win and winning draw over Hampton Hill during the season, the league rules favoured us and we stayed
up by the slimmest of margins possible. For context, this was only the second time it has happened in the
history of the league.
Next season will need to bring solidity in the batting order and a better sense of “team” if it is to be a
successful one. The talent is undoubtedly there, the application of that talent is all that is needed.

SATURDAY 2ND
XI REPORT
P W D L A
League 18 5 2 9 2
Ultimately an unsatisfactory season in which we lost games against teams of men and boys we should
easily have beaten. We missed both relegation and the luxury of a settled team.
Like last year, we fielded over forty players in the league season and only seven players appeared in more
than half of the 18 league games. That means that the team that went out one week contained only half
the players from the previous week. And that was not a problem of this side only, such turnover affected
the first team too. We started to get late in the week cry offs. The first team naturally nicked a second
teamer (it is right that the first team comes first) and it was only through the good work of JP that we had
reserves upon which to draw. I thank JP and Devon for their constructive attitude on this throughout the
season.
On the batting side, Mark Wibberley played several fine innings in his usual flamboyant style, always great
to watch, and making it look so simple; deservedly he was Batsman of the Year. But the find du saison
was Saad Hannan. Forced to opening the batting early in the season, Saad made a virtue out of necessity
with some aggressive stroke play. A fine 47 was superseded by a remarkable 64* against Old Pauline.
Chasing a modest 119, Saad was quickly running out of partners mainly because he was quickly running
them out. With his last buddy at the crease he spanked the remaining dozen runs off his own bat for a one
wicket win. A remarkable individual performance. Saad had scored 18 runs in 8 innings last year and I
always knew he had this in him!
There was also a remarkable team performance which arguably prevented us being demoted. Chasing an
unlikely 292 for victory, Wibbers demonstrated his weak grasp of probability by trying to score all the runs
himself. This he only partially succeeded, 35-1 off 7 overs. No one else was able to take things on, wickets
fell and the shop had to be shut up. Julian held firm for 74 balls, beaten only by James Hannaford who
nurdled two singles in twenty overs. The last pair survived 20 balls. After Mark was out the team scored
30 odd runs in 40 overs. Dour stuff but it became ever more virtuous and it was enough to deny the oppo
their 20 points which ensured they finished below us and kept us up.
The bowlers had unremarkable seasons, only JP being able to put in match winning performances with his
off spin. Newbie Rolf Merchant put in a spiky spell of quick (by our standards) bowling to turn a likely defeat
against Roehampton into a narrow win.
So, we did ok but too many of us will feel that we had an underperforming season with the bat, making it
too easy for the oppo.

6 captains, 40 players playing 2 or more games and only 5 playing more than 8; stability is not the word
that immediately springs to mind, but nevertheless the Sunday 1s have managed a winning season. Jon’s
early season injury began the captaincy carousel as Darryn, Nathan, Shipar and Chris all had various turns
at being Sunday 1s captain around my own absences.
It is safe to say that we performed better during the first half of the season, the departures of Shyam and
Dean leaving large gaps in the side. August availability once again proved shaky at best, but until from
April until mid-July we were a force to be reckoned with. This included a 5 match unbeaten run, during
which we completed probably the most spectacular chase I’ve seen in 5 years at Putney. 285 was chased
down against Lord Gnomes with 8 ½ overs left after Jason’s spectacular 123 not out off 77 balls. Whilst
the latter part of the season was a struggle on the field, it is to everyone’s credit that the spirit in the team
remained good. Even when conceding 321-0 vs Crane with only 9 players, all abuse being directed
squarely at the game itself.
Looking forward to next season, I will echo every Putney team at the end of every season and pray for
some stability in the side next year….anyone know any good religions?

SUNDAY 2nd
XI REPORT
P W D L
All 12 4 1 7
2014 was a year of mixed outcomes for the Sunday 2s, off the field, a new cadre of weekend warriors
formed a great bond and team spirit. On the pitch, results were disappointing, with a win ratio of under
25%, and the surrendering of some potentially match winning positions.
With a reduction in squad size from almost 50 last year to just over 30 this year, there difference in team
coherence and spirit off the field was immense with a couple of changes to the line-up week-to-week
rather than wholesale changes every week.
Unfortunately this improved spirit was not reflected in improved results on the field. Whilst the line up was
more settled, and more gelled, there was a lack of experience (aside from occasional guest stars,
Brooksey) which often showed at key moments. Strong positions were squandered, collapses not halted
and situations not controlled and turned in our favour as the lack of a seasoning within the ranks showed.
That said, all mucked in, and had fun, and hopefully the new skipper can push the team to new heights
and add some steel to the side so that we can push forward and notch up a few more in the wins column.

by Brian McMillan and thanks were extended to him for the great efforts made. Mike thanked all the
committee for their hard work throughout the year.
3. Financial Report

generosity of members volunteering and their auction purchases at the awards evening. Bar sales
were down on the previous year and we all need to make the effort in improving this. The Public

managed to fill all our teams for every fixture.
5. Team Captain Reports
• Saturday 1st: No report as Devon Ebersohn not in attendance.

PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB– 2014 SEASON Page 3 MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT The Saturday 1st XI Played 17, Won 5, WD1, LD 2, T 0, L 7, NR 3, Bat 20, Bowl 25, Points 159, and finished eighth in Division 1 (First XIs). The Saturday 2nd XI Played 17, Won 5, WD 1, LD 1, T 0, L 9, NR 2, Bat 19, Bowl 19, Points 148, and finished eighth in Division 1 (Second XIs). The Sunday 1st XI won 9 of the 19 played, losing 9 with one tie, and the Sunday 2nd XI played 12, won 4, drew 1, and lost 7. The general theme throughout the sides was a lack of stability. We need players to commit themselves to playing week in, week out! There will be a trial net on Saturday 18th April at the Oval, 12.00 - 14.00hrs. On Saturday 25th April we are away to defend The Roehampton S.W.15. Cup, and on Sunday 26th April there will be a trial game at home. On the 2nd May the Saturday 1st XI are playing in their first league game, away at West End Esher, whilst the Saturday 2nd XI are at home to West End Esher. On Sunday 3rd May we have a home game in the 1st round of the league cup versus Merton and a Sunday friendly versus Crane away. Tony Fenton is busy arranging the Sunday fixtures and will circulate these on the club website in the near future. We are also entering the leagues midweek 20/20 competition. Paul McCann will coordinate the sides/fixtures and will circulate further details in due course. The midweek LMS competition is also going from strength to strength and details will be circulated by Andrew Woodhead/Dez Telfer during the course of the season. As ever, our grateful thanks go to Eddie McVarish and Alan Hartridge for all their work on the ground throughout the year. Some of the scores achieved were a testament to the blood, sweat and tears Eddie and Alan put in. The AGM is on Wednesday 25th March 2015 starting at 7.30pm sharp in the upstairs function room of the The Dukes Head Public House, Lower Richmond Road (near Putney Bridge). Please make a special effort to attend, as it is your opportunity to voice issues and concerns about your club. I will gladly accept cheques/cash on the night for your playing membership, £100.00 full membership, £40.00 under 18’s/students. The club website holds a wealth of information, and the text facility has gone a long way in improving communication. Our thanks go to Ben Brook for his time and expertise in this field. The site can be accessed via www.putneycricketclub.com. Although we are relying on the website/texts as our main communication tool, it is imperative the Team Secretary, James Peters, has each players current e-mail address, phone numbers, (home/work/mobile), and address. Would you please e-mail James with any updates/amendments to your details. James can be contacted on (h) 020 8265 2463, (m) 07711 928141, or e-mail jdpeters2@googlemail.com A special mention has to go to Tony Fenton, Fixture Secretary, for all his hard work in ensuring that we had opposition week in, week out. Our thanks go to Tony Fenton who is standing down as League representative for the club. Tony has performed this role for a number of years and has been very efficient. Fortunately he is going to carry on as Fixture Secretary. Due to the work that has to be performed during the close season, a replacement was sort, and we are fortunate to have Doug Shaw filling his shoes. Thanks also to Ash Baptista who is standing down as 100 Club promoter (Mike has agreed to take on the role), and to the following captains/vice captains who are standing down: Saturday 1st team skipper and vice Devon Ebersohn and Ian Almond, Saturday 2nd team skipper and vice Doug Shaw and Matt Atkins, Sunday 1st team skipper Jon White, and Sunday 2nd team skipper and vice Chris Powell and Richard Wilson. As well as the organisation on match days a lot of work goes on behind the scenes, and I would like to thank all of the above for the time and effort they have displayed during their time in office. We are looking for captains/vice captains for the majority of the sides. If you are interested in standing for a vacant position, or indeed one already held, please get in touch with one of the committee and arrange to get a proposer/seconder, and send an e-mail to the Club Secretary, Mark Wibberley, at least one week prior to the AGM, ie. by 18th March 2015.

PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB– 2014 SEASON Page 4 Congratulations to Dan and Emma Parmar on the birth of a baby boy, Monty Alexander, on 14.10.2014, to Chris and Ide Powell on the birth of a baby girl, Maria Joyce, on 07.12.2014 to Ian and Hannah Almond on the birth of a baby girl, Elin Catharina Angel, on 05.01.2015, and to Brian and Caroline Macmillan on the birth of a baby girl, Ebeneezer David, on 03.02.2015. Congratulations also to Jon and Gisele White who tied the knot on 22.01.2015. The Wibberleys, Mark, Megan and Alice are busy fundraising for the charity C.R.Y., (cardiac risk in the young), in memory of their son Emlyn. There will be a collection box on the bar throughout the summer to put your loose change in and there is a fundraising page on the Putney CC website, (a link on the right hand side top navigation), if you would like to make a donation. So far £5,536.23 (6,795.87 incl. gift aid) has been raised towards the target figure of £6,000. I am sure the club can assist in getting that figure to £10K. Our thanks go to Brian Macmillan and other players who provided teas for the 2014 season. Brian has agreed to provide teas on Saturdays throughout the 2015 season. We are looking for a willing party to provide teas for Sunday games. Captains have a lot on their plate on match days and if they don’t have to worry about organising teas, it goes a long way in making the day run smoothly! The presentation evening held on 28th November 2014 in The Cellar Bar, Star and Garter Hotel in Putney proved to be a great success. The club took £5321.67 from the entrance fee, raffle/auction, less expenses of £3191.36, (cost of hall/buffet/drinks/karaoke/speaker/test tickets/plaques/engraving/sundries), and the contribution to C.R.Y. of £400.00, total profit = £1730.31. Our thanks go to all those who donated so generously towards the raffle and auction prizes, and of course the highest bidders on the night. Our thanks also go to Paul and Anjna McCann, Ben Brook, Chin Ratnayake and Owen Hereford for all their hard work in organising the event. This year the presentation evening is going to be held on Saturday 07th November 2015 at 07.30hrs at the same venue, The Cellar Bar of The Star and Garter Hotel, 4, Lower Richmond Road, Putney, next to the bridge. The finer details, including details of the meal, which was pretty non-existent last year, will be circulated during the summer months, but the club will once again subsidise the evening to keep the price of tickets affordable. All we would ask is that you commit yourself to attending, and help make the evening a resounding success. Please make a note in your diary !! Cricket nets, in preparation for the 2015 season, are underway at The Oval Cricket Ground. We have two lanes booked every Monday, 7 to 8pm (8 to 9 pm on certain dates), which commenced Monday 05th January 2015). Details are on the web site. If you have any queries contact Dez Telfer by e-mail, (darien.telfer@gmail.com), tel. 07905 062207, Piers Jackson, (Jackson.piers@gmail.com ), tel no. 07786 073120 or Hugo Flower, (hugo_dobsonfly@hotmail.com ), tel no. 07919 425106 who are the co-ordinators. It is down to each individual to promote the club to increase playing membership and secure a full programme of fixtures throughout the year. We have revamped the net next to the clubhouse, to enable midweek practice during the season and warm up sessions prior to a weekend game. The midweek game at Slinfold is on Wednesday 08th July, 2pm start, and for the enthusiasts amongst us, golfing days will be arranged for Thursday 09th July and Friday 10th July. Please make a note in your diary and book the time off work well in advance! A golf day is being arranged by Paul McCann during the month of June. Venue will either be Effingham or Tyrells Wood. Details will be circulated in the near future. We have put a set amount aside to have the roof refelted and guttering/facia boards replaced. There are also some interior improvements to be made to the clubhouse. Costs will be shared with our co-hosts, Fulham Compton Old Boys.

PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB– 2014 SEASON Page 8 Our membership was down on the previous season, 63 playing members as opposed to 66 in 2013. The percentage profit for the bar was 34%. My thanks go to Paul and Anjna McCann, Ben Brook, Chin Ratnayake and Owen Hereford for organising the presentation evening. Thank you to those that donated items for the auction. My thanks also to each member who contributed towards the raffle, and to the highest bidders at the auction. The above and an evening game contributed to £2,705 of our takings for the 2014 season. The one social function in June, made a profit of £70.00. Match fees were up, but this is attributed to tea monies not being deducted at source. Expenditure; I will highlight the areas with the largest differentials. Ground account: The equipment repairs are lower due to the roller and outfield mower not being serviced. This will feature in next year’s accounts. Pavilion account: As mentioned in the accounts last year, our contribution to the joint fund has risen to £2,500 per club. The main expense being insurance. A set amount has been put aside to have the roof re-felted and facia/guttering repaired/replaced. Miscellaneous account: Teas were not deducted from the match fees on the given day, as explained above. The playing equipment included, extra cricket balls £600.00, score books £59.96, umpire counters £7.98, 6 x plastic chairs £48.00, gas refills £67.99. Sundries included a broken window £75.00, Gratuities £51.00. I again ask members to settle their annual membership of £100.00/£40.00 (students) at the earliest opportunity. Please ensure you bring sufficient monies on the day of a game to cover match fees and I do not want to see any I.O.U’s behind the bar !! My annual reminder “only players nominated by the captain are to go behind the bar, and I would ask all to be vigilant,” will go a long way in retaining the percentage profit. There are a number of clubhouse improvements taking place this year, so any suggestions for raising club funds through social events or other means are always welcome. Have a good season, and spend plenty of money in the clubhouse. Mike Curtis Treasurer THE EVE AND STAN MARSHALL 100 CLUB The 100 club of Putney Cricket Club is an ideal way of raising much needed funds and a way of winning cash prizes. If you would like to become a member, which costs £2.00 per number per month by direct debit, please contact Mike Curtis (michaelhcurtis@hotmail.com). We are eager to increase the existing membership of 40 during the 2015 season. The six lucky winners drawn at The Presentation Evening on Fri 28th November 2014 and each receiving a cheque to the value of £100.00 were: Eddie McVarish, Trudi Curtis, Derek Cowper, James Peters, Dave Pegrum and one TBA

PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB– 2014 SEASON Page 9 SATURDAY 1ST XI REPORT P W D L A League 18 5 3 7 3 Friendlies 4 2 1 1 0 A season which promised much but delivered little. The key problem was availability of regular members. An unsettled team lead to numerous underperformances throughout the season. The first few weeks held so much promise. A regular core of 9 players with balance in the bowling and depth in the batting meant we were able to secure victories from positions that would have seen us lose in previous seasons. Victories over teams that finished top 3 in the league buoyed confidence and promotion was a very realistic goal. Then unavailability and instability plagued the season till its final tense conclusion. Good bowling through the year was unfortunately not backed up by the batting. The most glaring example of this was being 5 down for less than 40 in consecutive weeks. Not being able to consistently put partnerships together lead to collapses from every part of the order with every possible combination. Relegation was almost a certainty but for Hampton Hill slipping at the final hurdle. Putney needed to score 180 runs and take 9 wickets in the final game to get enough bonus points to avoid relegation. Hampton Hill needed just a victory to avoid the same fate. After taking the 9 wickets Putney fell 8 runs short of securing the vital bonus point. Once again, poor batting on a flat wicket underlined the horrible woes of the season. Luckily, Hampton Hill failed as well. This left us level on points at the end of the season. With the win and winning draw over Hampton Hill during the season, the league rules favoured us and we stayed up by the slimmest of margins possible. For context, this was only the second time it has happened in the history of the league. Next season will need to bring solidity in the batting order and a better sense of “team” if it is to be a successful one. The talent is undoubtedly there, the application of that talent is all that is needed. Devon Ebersohn Saturday 1st XI Captain

PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB– 2014 SEASON Page 10 SATURDAY 2ND XI REPORT P W D L A League 18 5 2 9 2 Ultimately an unsatisfactory season in which we lost games against teams of men and boys we should easily have beaten. We missed both relegation and the luxury of a settled team. Like last year, we fielded over forty players in the league season and only seven players appeared in more than half of the 18 league games. That means that the team that went out one week contained only half the players from the previous week. And that was not a problem of this side only, such turnover affected the first team too. We started to get late in the week cry offs. The first team naturally nicked a second teamer (it is right that the first team comes first) and it was only through the good work of JP that we had reserves upon which to draw. I thank JP and Devon for their constructive attitude on this throughout the season. On the batting side, Mark Wibberley played several fine innings in his usual flamboyant style, always great to watch, and making it look so simple; deservedly he was Batsman of the Year. But the find du saison was Saad Hannan. Forced to opening the batting early in the season, Saad made a virtue out of necessity with some aggressive stroke play. A fine 47 was superseded by a remarkable 64* against Old Pauline. Chasing a modest 119, Saad was quickly running out of partners mainly because he was quickly running them out. With his last buddy at the crease he spanked the remaining dozen runs off his own bat for a one wicket win. A remarkable individual performance. Saad had scored 18 runs in 8 innings last year and I always knew he had this in him! There was also a remarkable team performance which arguably prevented us being demoted. Chasing an unlikely 292 for victory, Wibbers demonstrated his weak grasp of probability by trying to score all the runs himself. This he only partially succeeded, 35-1 off 7 overs. No one else was able to take things on, wickets fell and the shop had to be shut up. Julian held firm for 74 balls, beaten only by James Hannaford who nurdled two singles in twenty overs. The last pair survived 20 balls. After Mark was out the team scored 30 odd runs in 40 overs. Dour stuff but it became ever more virtuous and it was enough to deny the oppo their 20 points which ensured they finished below us and kept us up. The bowlers had unremarkable seasons, only JP being able to put in match winning performances with his off spin. Newbie Rolf Merchant put in a spiky spell of quick (by our standards) bowling to turn a likely defeat against Roehampton into a narrow win. So, we did ok but too many of us will feel that we had an underperforming season with the bat, making it too easy for the oppo. Douglas Shaw Saturday 2nd XI Captain

PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB– 2014 SEASON Page 11 SUNDAY XI REPORT P W D L T All 19 9 0 9 1 6 captains, 40 players playing 2 or more games and only 5 playing more than 8; stability is not the word that immediately springs to mind, but nevertheless the Sunday 1s have managed a winning season. Jon’s early season injury began the captaincy carousel as Darryn, Nathan, Shipar and Chris all had various turns at being Sunday 1s captain around my own absences. It is safe to say that we performed better during the first half of the season, the departures of Shyam and Dean leaving large gaps in the side. August availability once again proved shaky at best, but until from April until mid-July we were a force to be reckoned with. This included a 5 match unbeaten run, during which we completed probably the most spectacular chase I’ve seen in 5 years at Putney. 285 was chased down against Lord Gnomes with 8 ½ overs left after Jason’s spectacular 123 not out off 77 balls. Whilst the latter part of the season was a struggle on the field, it is to everyone’s credit that the spirit in the team remained good. Even when conceding 321-0 vs Crane with only 9 players, all abuse being directed squarely at the game itself. Looking forward to next season, I will echo every Putney team at the end of every season and pray for some stability in the side next year….anyone know any good religions? PUTNEY CRICKET CLUB– 2014 SEASON Page 12 SUNDAY 2nd XI REPORT P W D L All 12 4 1 7 2014 was a year of mixed outcomes for the Sunday 2s, off the field, a new cadre of weekend warriors formed a great bond and team spirit. On the pitch, results were disappointing, with a win ratio of under 25%, and the surrendering of some potentially match winning positions. With a reduction in squad size from almost 50 last year to just over 30 this year, there difference in team coherence and spirit off the field was immense with a couple of changes to the line-up week-to-week rather than wholesale changes every week. Unfortunately this improved spirit was not reflected in improved results on the field. Whilst the line up was more settled, and more gelled, there was a lack of experience (aside from occasional guest stars, Brooksey) which often showed at key moments. Strong positions were squandered, collapses not halted and situations not controlled and turned in our favour as the lack of a seasoning within the ranks showed. That said, all mucked in, and had fun, and hopefully the new skipper can push the team to new heights and add some steel to the side so that we can push forward and notch up a few more in the wins column. Chris Powell Sunday 2nd XI Captain
