Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Welcome from your chairman
Welcome to May’s meeting of Mansfield and District U3A. The year is flying by, but, as we say, the older
we get, time does seem to pass more quickly.
I cannot believe that a year ago I wrote about attending a youth festival of rugby at Cromford Meadows
near Matlock. Well, I went again this year and I am full of praise for the young players (aged from 7 to 14),
the referees and the organisers, I hope it continues for many years. I also attended a concert featuring the
Carlton Male Voice Choir at the Albert Hall, Nottingham, with guests, the Kanneh-Mason family, six
wonderfully gifted musicians aged 10 to 19 who were an inspiration to everyone. There are a lot of great
kids out there who we should encourage and help.
I hope May will be warmer for us as April was very wintry at times. We have our Coffee Morning on
Friday May 20th at 10.00 am at The Towers. If you haven’t purchased a ticket, please do so as it helps
to keep our subs low. I always enjoy the event: a raffle, tombola and cake stall, with plants for sale from
the gardeners, pies from Shelia Whalley and, of course, a cup of coffee. Enjoy!
We do need more people to put themselves forward to be on the committee. It is very important
to our U3A that we have a vibrant and enthusiastic committee to guide us onwards to being a
better organisation, so please help if you can.
The electronic notice board is still improving and I believe we are winning. Some group leaders
are submitting notices to be shown and Gordon Howlett is forwarding the pictures of events. All
will be on the “notice board”. Please take time to have a look at the TVs during the coffee break.
Any constructive criticism is welcome as we try to improve the display.

Words from the Editor
I've just arrived back from a holiday in Italy – Lake Garda and aboard a river cruiser in Venice, so please
excuse any errors in this edition. A French-owned boat with haute cuisine and all drinks included did not
make for an easy time!
Norma Smith, our Speaker Finder, says that last month's speaker, Andy Smith, produced an enjoyable
and relaxing hour of entertainment with anecdotes of his life and songs played on a variety of guitars and
similar instruments. She hopes that you enjoyed his 'speech' as well.
A piece of important late news – Mansfield Town FC has kindly allowed us to park our cars in their car
park when we take a day trip. Park on the left as you go in, behind the gate. Group leaders – please
continue to inform the Secretary and obtain the U3A display slip from him.
Enjoy this issue of the Newsletter.

4. A 'Royal' Visit to the Antiques & Collectables Group
The April meeting was surprised and delighted at the coffee break when an anonymous person
turned up to offer cakes to the members (see picture)! The theme, of course, was Royal
Memorabilia. Pat Blackwell had worried lest the subject was too narrow and so offered 'London'
as an alternative but once again, the members displayed their wealth of possessions in a wide
variety of objects connected with Royalty.
Not just the present Queen, but also past Royals, were
remembered on mugs and stamps, in books and
certificates and with bottles and trinkets. The selection
was wide and varied and each had its own story. Of
interest as well, was David Ling's print of the Royal
Academy by Sir Hugh Casson PRA who designed the
interior of the RY Britannia and taught Prince Charles.
Antiques & Collectables Group Visit
On a Saturday morning in April, thirty one members
boarded a coach to attend an antiques fair at Stafford
County Showground. Not long into the journey, I was
asked why the driver was taking this unusual route to
Stamford. I had to point out that we were going to
Stafford not Stamford! Anticipation was high and so
was the level of chatter.
We arrived safely and started to view as many of the
300 stalls as we could. I think I managed to see about
275 of them. I did stop for lunch and later coffee and cake – well you need to keep your
energy levels up!
On the return journey, I discovered that many people had bought things and that one lady
had sold an item and proceeded to spend the money immediately. It didn’t have time to burn
a hole in her pocket. Some bartering was entered into and I understand one person told the
stallholder that the grandchildren would have to wear shoes with holes in the bottom if the
price of the intended purchase wasn’t reduced. I think he was successful.
I don’t think there was as much chatter on the return journey but, all in all, I think we had an
enjoyable, though tiring, day out.

Key to Meetings details:
THIS TABLE SHOWS THE DAY of the month, time and frequency using the first two letters of the
day, followed by numbers 1 - 5 to represent the week number. The final letter M (or F, W or V)
indicates that the group meets monthly, fortnightly, weekly or at variable intervals.
So 'Tu2, 2.30 - V M' would mean a group meeting on the 2nd Tuesday at 2.30pm Monthly but with

Golf
A record turnout of 11 members played the front nine of the Admiral’s Course and the back nine of the
Commander’s Course at Oakmere Park in the last monthly fixture. One of our new members had an
interesting experience when he was attacked by a squirrel. Luckily the attack was repelled by threatening
it with a golf club. The moral of the story is do not take your breakfast round in your golf club bag!
9. At the 19th hole, someone said he was considering reporting Tony to the R.S.P.C.A! All members
said they had enjoyed the game.
The next fixture is at Brierley Forest Golf Course, Huthwaite on Friday 27th May at 9.30 am for a 10 am
tee off. The fees are between £11-£15 dependent on the number of holes you play.

SHUFFLERS CELEBRATE THE QUEEN'S 90th BIRTHDAY!
The Shufflers, decked out in red, white and blue, celebrated the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth at
Brierley Park with a light lunch, followed by a birthday cake and a spirited singing of the national anthem.
We intended to finish our day with a shuffle to the lake, but as we were leaving the visitor centre, a heavy
hailstorm sent us 'shuffling' to the car park. The swans were denied our version of Happy Birthday, much to
their relief! The next meeting will be at Edwinstowe Craft Centre onThursday May 26th.

International Dining Group
Wednesday 6th April saw the International Dining Group having a great time at Chungs Chinese
Restaurant in Mapperley. With 24 members and a guest from Burma, this was truly an international
evening. The menu was extensive and with good portions, but, better still, it tasted excellent. Even the
house wine was reasonable in price and taste.
Six members who normally join us (holidays taking precedence this month) missed a treat. Our next
venture on Wednesday May 11th is to And Why Not, an English restaurant in the heart of Mansfield
with a first class reputation. Why not (no pun intended) give the International Dining Group a try?

The Dwindling Band, or Didn’t We HaveAWonderful Time the Day We Went to Warwick?
Erudite pop aficionados might screw their faces up at the mention of the above before hesitatingly
offering, ‘I think they had a hit in the late 1960’s. Well, possibly, but our Dwindling Band almost sank out
of sight before setting off for the great mediaeval fortress of Warwick. By the time we boarded the bus,
there were but four of us left. Rita, Sandra, Dave and Jenny finally de-bussed at the castle after arriving
with a bang as the Skills (?) Driver attempted to demolish a wall that, for all I know, had been lovingly
hand laid by some ancient aristocrat. Cue swarming security guards alerted by the bang oops thud
scrape noises.
Undaunted, Sandra set off to tie down the legend of Warwick the Kingmaker, whilst Dave, after reading
the health and safety warning that Persons suffering from cardiac, lung, back and other related

the less arduous GaolAttraction.
Funny idea of fun these ancestors of ours had!
During our tour of the rest of the cunningly
disguised sub-Disney tourist trap, we were
gratified to hear dozens of different languages
spoken and to watch the national coffers trilling
up a profit as tourist Yen, Dollars and Roubles
poured into the nation’s grimly mitts. Dave was
particularly taken by a large group of obviously
rustic Poles rambling up towards the battle-
ments (most nailed into a fence – the poles, not
the Poles).
On the whole, an enjoyable day enhanced by
the rain holding off just long enough not to
bother us. Warwick the Kingmaker, I hope,
would be delighted to see his old home supporting our economy.

Strollers
The Strollers have been having an exciting time of late with the March and April walks becoming
quite an adventure. The weather in March was not too good but five brave souls dared to venture out
around Vicar Water where parts were flooded. We waded through water and clung to hedgerows for
dear life although back at the café, relaxing over a cup of tea, we saw the funny side of it all.
The Hardwick walk in April proved to
be just as adventurous, only this time
the hazard was mud. We had to detour
as the National Trust is reworking the
paths and the wood. Boy, did we have
fun trying to stay upright as we slipped
around in the mud! Marion did fall and
her light coloured jacket changed
shade.
But the weather was perfect and we
sat outside the Hardwick Inn enjoying
our coffee in the sun. If you want to add
a sense of adventure to your life, then
join the Strollers!

Dave Drew's Indoor Model Flying didn't get off the ground – perhaps an idea ahead of its time? A
comparison could be the gyrocopter – a good idea, but it never really took off.

11. On the other hand, his History Group is going well and the next meeting, on Wednesday 18th May,
is on the 'Great Explorers'.
Dave has also issued an early message about a History Group outing to the Richard III
exhibition in Leicester on Thursday September 22nd. The bus pick up time at the MTFC
would be 9.30am, returning by 4.30pm approx.
Visit to Tolethorpe Hall, Stamford: The proposed visit to Tolethorpe to see Toad of Toad Hall on
July 13th has been cancelled. A dramatic increase in the price of the Community bus by some £60
has meant that it is no longer viable to go as a group. However, should any of those interested want
to drive there, then Mike Allen can obtain tickets for them.
Meanwhile, Christine Smith's new Swimming Group is bobbing along merrily. She reports, “There
were 10 members who are very interested in the swimming group, but only 3 of us turned up last
Sunday. I am looking at the 1st and 3rd Sundays at 2.00pm at the FitnessFlex gym, next to the
football ground. The cost is £4.00, for the use of the (warm) pool, plus the sauna, steam room,
jacuzzi, turbo pool and free hairdryers! Don't forget the pound coin for the lockers, but you get this
back”. Contact Christine on 07859 249086 or at the meeting.
Our Centre (the Kirkby Community Bus owners) has had to increase their prices quite considerably
as a result of large cuts to their grants by the Council, the increase in the 'Living Wage' and the
necessity to provide a pension for any employees. So, goodbye to cheaper travel from that source.
The Book Table made £38.70 in April. Lilian reports, “We are still trying to get the optimum format for
the tables to enable people to see the books before they buy. Sooner or later we will have an
arrangement which works but in the meantime, if you cannot get before the announcements, come
during the break”.
Theatre Visits:

then a visit to The Shard and Windsor Castle with entrance fees included.
All for £255 (sharing). The single supplement is £36 (down from £46 last year).
If your £50 deposit was paid before the end of March, £10 will be deducted from the price of the theatre

deduct £49.50 from the full amount.
