This document provides strategies for teachers to create a virtual 6th grade math classroom using Google apps and other online tools. It recommends using Google Hangouts for video chats that allow multiple students to interact simultaneously from anywhere, Google Docs for real-time collaboration, and VoiceThread for creating multimedia presentations where students can interact during and after through voice comments and text. Zaption and Remind are also mentioned as tools to make learning fun by engaging students and communicating with parents.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Within any classroom there will always be the struggle for student to communicate and collaborate with you and one another. As the world of technology changes so must the classroom. According to Amanda Lenhart of PewReachCenter, “92% of teens report going online daily, including 24% who say they go online “almost constantly” (2015). There are very few things that have this much interaction by students now is when we say, “How do we use it!?” Through this presentation you will learn about the tools of Google Apps, Voicethread, and Zaption and how they can be use within your classroom.
Many school districts provide students with a google account with all applications upon enrollment. With access to all of the virtual tools available students are able to connect with the teacher and their classmates on a variety of forums. Students can work on one combine document simultaneously to create group projects or peer review on any projects.
This application is a way for students to communicate at a distance. This includes video conferences and real time text discussion. Students can interact with members of their class as well as experts within a field of study. Google hangouts is a similar form to communication tools that students use everyday within the social life. You can use Google Hangout to bring in guest speakers or just to encourage collaboration of students there are so many option “Hangouts promote conversation and—because they can accommodate up to 10 participants—brings a larger group in” (McCrea, 2013).
Many students can be involved in the creation and review of a single document. As students share their information they are able to interact and collaborate within one document. Google docs allow for embedding of many online tools such as videos.
Voicethread is a revolutionary website that brings the learning and communication to the forefront of the classroom. This virtual learning experience allow students to interact with the teacher and other classmates while the presentation is taking place. This allows for real time interaction that is often not available within the virtual classroom.
Voicethread provides an experience that all members can be involved. The biggest value that voicethread can provide is to students who do not participate well in the normal classroom. It allows for not only “think time” that is often forgotten in the normal classroom but allows students time to integrate new knowledge into a usable understanding. Ferriter, a veteran in Voicethread instruction, states, “more students participate more actively in digital discussions than in the classroom” (Weir, 2008).
Zaption is an online presentation site that creates a place for presentations to be created as well as student to discussions to be embedded in the learning. The presentations are set up with discussion in mind. Throughout the lesson students are given time to stop and reflect or discuss what they are learning. Not only is the presenter a part of the video but there are also the options to embed other materials that are engaging to students.
Remind is a program that once connection is created teachers are able to inform parents and students of anything. This is a create tool for increasing parent communication and allows for easy access with one text notification. Using this within the classroom also helps to remind students that they need to study for an important upcoming test or that they need to wear appropriate schools for school trip.
