Small is the new big, and for good reason. The benefits of microservices and service-oriented architecture have been extolled for a number of years, yet many forge ahead without thinking of the impact the users of the services. Consuming on micro services can be enjoyable as long as the developer experience has been crafted as finely as the service itself. But just like with any other product, there isn’t a single kind of consumer. Together we will walk through some typical kinds of consumers, what their needs are, and how we can create a great developer experience using brains and tools like Docker.

This presentation will show the combination of two ideas that can create 2 to 3 order of magnitude efficiencies in service delivery. We will discuss an example used in an insurance company that has experienced these efficiencies. Josh Corman will present the concept of using Open Source and Toyota Supply Chain principles as a weapon for eliminating operational costs of service delivery. By applying first order principles like fewer suppliers (e.g, less logging frameworks) and image manifests (i.e., bill of materials) he will show how an organization can cut down on bugs and issue resolution times. John Willis will then cover how these principles fit like peanut butter and chocolate when used in an immutable delivery model based on Docker. This presentation was the third highest rated session at the 2015 Devops Enterprise Summit.

Fugro Chance Inc. oversees ship surveys globally using IoT and Docker. They developed a solution using AWS, Docker, and microservices to support a real-time web application for ship tracking. Key challenges included supporting services that need to run together and efficiently deploying new versions. They addressed this using SupervisorD to run multiple services in a single Docker container. This allows flexible development and deployment of future microservices.

Gene Kim gave a presentation on his 15-year journey studying high performing IT organizations and their use of DevOps practices. He discussed how traditional IT operations created conflict between development and operations teams. However, companies like Google, Amazon and Netflix achieved much higher performance through practices like continuous integration, deployment of smaller changes frequently, automated testing, and monitoring production environments. These practices improved flow, feedback and continuous learning.

This document discusses how RTI International, a non-profit research institute, uses Docker to help improve various software products and tools. It describes several projects including CFS Analytics, a crime analysis tool; Crosstab Builder, a statistical analysis tool; and Public Health Microsimulations. Dockerizing brownfield enterprise applications can often be a daunting task - involving changes to the application code/configuration and existing build processes. The DCHQ platform provides “on-the-fly” containerization of both Linux & Windows enterprise applications – including Java, Oracle, .NET and others. By doing so, DCHQ transforms non-cloud-native applications into completely portable applications that can take advantage of cloud scaling, storage redundancy and most importantly, deployment agility without introducing a single change to the application source control repository.
In this session, we will cover the deployment automation of an Enterprise Java application with PostgreSQL multi-host cluster set up for Master-Slave replication and automated storage management with redundant EBS volumes on AWS using DCHQ + EMC REX-Ray. We will also cover the deployment automation of an Enterprise .NET application demonstrating the application life-cycle management capabilities post-provision -- including monitoring, alerts, continuous delivery, application backups, scale in/out, in-browser terminal to access the containers, log streaming, and application updates.

As containers move from the developer's workstation into production environments there are many questions about how they fit into a company's existing infrastructure. Should a workload run in a VM or in a container? Should that container run on physical or virtual? In the data center or in the cloud?
The reality is that there is no "right" answer, just a series of questions that admins should be asking as they look to figure out where to run their application workloads. In this talk we'll take a look at the key differences between containers and VMs. From there we'll discuss the coexistence of VMs and containers, and finally we'll take a look at key factors to consider when making the decision where to run your applications. Throughout the presentation we'll highlight real world customers, their problems, and their ultimate deployment decisions.
DCSF 19 Microservices API: Routing Across Any Infrastructure

Microservice architectures can be difficult to implement. Specifically how to route to the a service correctly and ensure that traffic is spread across all instances of that service. What happens in a cloud environment where it is normal to lose and gain service instances as a part of daily operations? How do you configure something to be able to consistently route to your service when you don’t even know where your service is running!? At Docker, we developed our own highly available and automated API server on top of HAProxy with deep integration with Consul. Our API server acts as a service discovery and load balancing service to ensure availability in a highly dynamic environment. In addition to running such a complex application, we need to support thousands of requests per second while being able to monitor every request that comes through--that is no small feat!
In addition to running a highly available API server, we also recently migrated it from running natively on Ubuntu 14.04 to run all components inside of containers by using Kubernetes with Docker Enterprise. With the containerization journey came some benefits along with new challenges that were not foreseen.

Entergy, a large utility company headquartered in New Orleans, LA has launched an initiative to modernize their application infrastructure. During the initial analysis, Entergy recognized the existing legacy infrastructure’s lack of compatibility with more recent operating systems would stand in the way of progress. As a result, containerization was fast-tracked as the solution that can help them with the various tenants of their strategy: hyperconvergence, SaaS (ServiceNow), and workload portability. Docker Enterprise proved to be the right solution to migrate roughly 850 legacy applications from Windows Server 2003 and 2008 to Windows Server 2016 quickly, securely and economically. Entergy IT has now delivered the ability for the business to run applications on-premise, in the cloud, and future-proofed the applications for migration to new versions of Windows Server. In this session, Entergy will talk about how they are modernizing their infrastructure to become more agile, secure, and enable workload portability.

Watson developer cloud delivers Watson Cognitive services as micro services on the cloud that are being used by many IBM Watson customers. The micro services were packaged in ova at the first release. There were some drawbacks in ova deployment in the cloud. We gradually switched to use docker. As a result, the service deployment time and start up time are significantly improved. It also greatly simplified our continuous delivery process since our services run on both Intel and Power platform and we have offerings on our public cloud, dedicated cloud as well as customers’ on premise cloud. With minimal deployment time and quick startup time, Docker makes our dynamic creation of service instance on the fly per customer request possible.

The SDACK architecture stands for Spark, Docker, Akka, Cassandra, and Kafka. At TrendMicro, we adopted the SDACK architecture to implement a security event inspection platform for APT attack analysis. In this talk, we will introduce SDACK stack with Spark lambda architecture, Akka and Kafka for streaming data pipeline, Cassandra for time series data, and Docker for microservices. Specifically, we will show you how we Dockerize each SDACK component to facilitate the RD team of algorithms development, help the QA team test the product easily, and use the Docker as a Service strategy to ship our products to customers. Next, we will show you how we monitor each Docker container and adjust the resource usage based on monitoring metrics. And then, we will share our Docker security policy which ensures our products are safety before shipping to customers. Karthik Gaekwad presented on practical approaches to cloud native security. He discussed reducing the attack surface by securing hosts, container images, and the Kubernetes cluster. He highlighted security features in Kubernetes like secrets, authentication, authorization, audit logging, network policies, and pod security policies. Gaekwad also recommended using open source tooling to help with security and provided examples like Open Policy Agent.

* Dockerfile provides no built-in mechanism for creating abstractions,
so as usage grows identical or similar instructions can be duplicated
across many files
* The Docker APi exposes a build endpoint, but the API is very course,
taking Dockerfile as the transport rather than exposing the individual
instructions
* Dockerfiles are just that, files. So they can come from anywhere
The one layer per line in a Dockerfile limitation can lead to an
explosion of layers, which fail to take advantage of the promised
space and performance benefits.

Entergy, a large utility company headquartered in New Orleans, LA has launched an initiative to modernize their application infrastructure. During the initial analysis, Entergy recognized the existing legacy infrastructure’s lack of compatibility with more recent operating systems would stand in the way of progress. As a result, containerization was fast-tracked as the solution that can help them with the various tenants of their strategy: hyperconvergence, SaaS (ServiceNow), and workload portability. Docker Enterprise proved to be the right solution to migrate roughly 850 legacy applications from Windows Server 2003 and 2008 to Windows Server 2016 quickly, securely and economically. Entergy IT has now delivered the ability for the business to run applications on-premise, in the cloud, and future-proofed the applications for migration to new versions of Windows Server. In this session, Entergy will talk about how they are modernizing their infrastructure to become more agile, secure, and enable workload portability.

The SDACK architecture stands for Spark, Docker, Akka, Cassandra, and Kafka. At TrendMicro, we adopted the SDACK architecture to implement a security event inspection platform for APT attack analysis. In this talk, we will introduce SDACK stack with Spark lambda architecture, Akka and Kafka for streaming data pipeline, Cassandra for time series data, and Docker for microservices. Specifically, we will show you how we Dockerize each SDACK component to facilitate the RD team of algorithms development, help the QA team test the product easily, and use the Docker as a Service strategy to ship our products to customers. Next, we will show you how we monitor each Docker container and adjust the resource usage based on monitoring metrics. And then, we will share our Docker security policy which ensures our products are safety before shipping to customers. Gaekwad also recommended using open source tooling to help with security and provided examples like Open Policy Agent.

taking Dockerfile as the transport rather than exposing the individual
instructions
* Dockerfiles are just that, files. So they can come from anywhere
The one layer per line in a Dockerfile limitation can lead to an
explosion of layers, which fail to take advantage of the promised

Deploying Personalized Learning Labs using Docker Swarm by Nate Aune and Bria...
At Appsembler, we've built a system to deploy personalized learning labs using Docker Swarm. Each learning lab consists of arbitrary software running in a Docker container, so each student can have their own isolated environment to learn and experiment. The containers can be paired with another container running the Cloud9 IDE, allowing students to modify code and see the results in real time without the need to install anything on their own system.
Our system uses Docker Swarm to deploy and manage containers. To ensure the system is robust, we have automatic failover between Swarm managers (known as high availability). We'll discuss how we're using Consul to implement a highly available Swarm cluster, as well as other features of Swarm that we're using.

containerd summit - Deep Dive into containerd
containerd is an industry-standard core container runtime with an emphasis on simplicity, robustness and portability. It is available as a daemon for Linux and Windows, which can manage the complete container lifecycle of its host system: image transfer and storage, container execution and supervision, low-level storage and network attachments, etc..
containerd is designed to be embedded into a larger system, rather than being used directly by developers or end-users.
containerd includes a daemon exposing gRPC API over a local UNIX socket. The API is a low-level one designed for higher layers to wrap and extend. It also includes a barebone CLI (ctr) designed specifically for development and debugging purpose. It uses runC to run containers according to the OCI specification. The code can be found on GitHub, and here are the contribution guidelines.
containerd is based on the Docker Engine’s core container runtime to benefit from its maturity and existing contributors.

Driving containerd operations with gRPC
containerd uses gRPC and protocol buffers to define its API. gRPC provides benefits like code generation, performance, and common standards. The containerd gRPC services include Execution, Shim, and Content, which define methods like Create, Start, and List. Protocol buffer definitions generate client and server code in various languages. Developers can build clients and extend containerd with new services. The containerd API is under active development and aims to stabilize before the 1.0 release while allowing backwards compatibility through gRPC versioning.

Containerize All the (Multi-Platform) Things! by Phil Estes
There are literally tens of thousands of images available today in the public DockerHub repository. These images cover almost every possible distro and common open source tool, server, or application that exists today. But there has been one drawback--all of these images assume you are on the most commonly used platform: 64-bit Intel Linux. In late 2015 and 2016 the Docker development community and Docker distribution team have enabled a new registry image specification that supports packaging multiple architecture and OS layer images within the same repository name and tag. This allows a common image, say "mysql:latest", to contain references to images for all supported OS and architectures that the packager determines to make available. Now a `docker run` or `docker pull` of "mysql:latest" will work seamlessly across all supported architectures. In this talk we will demonstrate the packaging and running of a multi-architecture containerized application on several different supported Docker platforms like ARM, POWER, and System z.

What a difference a year makes. Last year Paypal presented on scaling a CI infrastructure with Docker, Mesos and Jenkins. Over the past year we worked on integrating Docker to the core of our PaaS ecosystem. We are Dockerizing the entire PayPal application ecosystem consisting of polyglot Java, Node.js, Scala, C++ and Python frameworks. In this journey we have introduced HA Docker Registry with ElasticSearch search plugin using both OpenStack Swift and Cinder storage, cross-data center ATS server smart image caching along with a developer-friendly boot2docker fig/compose workflow for Kraken (open source nodeJS) stack. This we believe has the potential to become one of the largest financial services production deployment of Docker.
DockerCon14 Performance Characteristics of Traditional VMs vs. Docker Containers
Docker containers provide significantly lower resource usage than traditional virtual machines when running multiple workloads concurrently on a server.
When booting 15 Ubuntu VMs with MySQL sequentially, Docker containers finished on average 3.5 seconds per boot versus 5.8 seconds for KVMs. Docker usage of CPU, memory, and load average was also much lower when running the same workload on 15 VMs concurrently in a steady state. Specifically, Docker CPU usage averaged 0.2-0.3% versus 1.9-0.4% for KVM, with Docker using 49MB of memory per VM versus 292MB for KVM.

Anyone interested in building a deep learning model is only a quick search away from a number of clear and well written tutorials that will take them from zero knowledge to having a working image classifier. But what happens when you need to deploy these models in a production setting? At Salesforce, we use TensorFlow models to help us provide customers with insights into their data, and we do this as close to real-time as possible. Designing these systems in a scalable manner requires overcoming a number of design challenges, but the core component is Docker. Docker enables us to design highly scalable systems by allowing us to focus on service interactions, rather than how our services will interact with the hardware. Docker is also at the core of our test infrastructure, allowing developers and data scientists to build and test the system in an end to end manner on their local machines. While some of this may sound complex, the core message is simplicity - Docker allows us to focus on the aspects of the system that matter, greatly simplifying our lives.

In this session, Clemente Biondo, the Tech Lead of the Information Systems Department, will share how his company is reacting to this unforeseeable scenario and how Docker-driven digital transformation had paved the path for work to continue remotely. Clemente will discuss learnings moving from colocated teams, manual approaches, email based-business processes, and a monolithic application to a mature DevOps culture characterized by a distributed autonomous workforce and a continuous deployment process that deploys backward-compatible Docker containerized microservices into hybrid multi cloud datacenters an average of twice a day with zero-downtime. He will detail how they use Docker to unify dev, test and production environments, and as an efficient and automated mechanism for deploying applications. Lastly, Clemente shares how, in our darkest hour, he and others are working to shine their brightest light.
Predicting Space Weather with Docker

SS&C Eze provides various products in the stock market domain. We spent the last couple of years building Eclipse which is an investment suite born in cloud. The journey so far has been very interesting. The very first version of the product were a bunch of monolithic windows services and deployed using Octopus tool. We successfully managed to bring all the monolithic problem to the cloud and created a nightmare for ourselves. We then started applying microservices architecture principles and started breaking the monolithic into small services. Very soon we realized that we need a better packaging/deployment tool. Docker looked like a magical solution to our problem. Since its adoption, It has not only solved the deployment problem for us but has made a deep impact on different aspects of SDLC. It allowed us to use heterogeneous technology stacks, simplified development environment setup, simplified our testing strategy, improved our speed of delivery, and made our developers more productive. In this talk I would like to share our experience of using Docker and its positive impact on our SDLC.
Kubernetes at Datadog Scale
Kubernetes networking can be complex to scale due to issues like growing iptables rules, but newer solutions are helping. Pod networking uses CNI plugins like flannel or Calico to assign each pod an IP and allow communication. Service networking uses kube-proxy and iptables or IPVS for load balancing to pods. DNS is used to resolve service names to IPs. While Kubernetes networking brings flexibility, operators must learn the nuances of their specific CNI plugin and issues can arise, but the ecosystem adapts quickly to new needs and changes don't impact all workloads.
